Sitting alone in his private office aboard the TES Divine Redemption Archbishop of PIE contemplates the state of affairs of the Empire. Recently he has felt almost lost in his dealings with the Minmatar and God. A new anger has surrounded him and turned him far from the man he once was. His religious zealotry has increased as has his anger toward the Minmatar. Yet there was something else.
He had become distraught at the death of a friend who worked as overseer on one of his plantations. Minmatar slaves had rebelled and murdered him and several other Amarrian overkseers before being contained. His anger at this betrayal had burned a hole in his heart. Where had he once been a caring slave owner he now felt an almost overpowering urge to hurt slaves. Something was not right.
He looked at his desk and the audit reports from his plantations. He looked at the roster containing the names of over 76,000+ slaves. He looked at the financial figures and balance sheets and looked down in sorrow.
None of this was right. Where had the glory of God gone in this battle for Enlightenment. Perhaps it had not left but Archbishop had left it.
In many ways he longed for the old days. The way he used to feel. The way things used to be.
Yet things had changed. Darker times were upon the Empire. A new Order had arisen and Archbishop felt strangely drawn to them. Loyal to the Emperor without fail they would do whatever it takes to ensure His will would be done. Archbishop felt loyalty to them nearly as strong as loyalty to PIE itself. While he would never leave PIE he also realized that slavery had become a distraction to his purpose as a servant of God.
Slavery could have no place in his life for economic reasons if it were to be truly pure.
Hitting a button below a gilded panel on his desk he called in his accountant. The man, an elderly Amarrian, walked in and bowed "Yes my Lord?" he said and stood there waiting.
Nodding to a chair Archbishop watched as the man sat down. "I have come to the realization that slavery for economic means is wrong" said Archbishop as the accountant raised an eyebrow. While he knew of Archbishops religious slant he also knew the Admiral from PIE understood the purpose of slaves in economy.
"What are you doing sir?" asked the man slowly.
"I want the shifts of all my factory slaves reduced 50%. We will no longer work slaves to exhaustion and pain. Slaves will be returned to the levels of care beyond that which they were when I led the SPCS.".
The accountant was stunned. The implications were staggering. A 50% loss of production would mean the loss of hundreds of millions of isk a month in revenue from sales.
"Sir... ah you sure that is wise?" the accountant asked cautiously.
"Yes I am. New hours for the slaves will be assigned. No more then six hours a day of work and six hours a day of scripture reading, twelve hours a day will be for personal duties of the slaves".
"Oh my...." said the accountant as his eyes went open wide. "But sir, your friend was killed, the slaves had to much freetime on their hands...".
"I was wrong. God would not approve of this mistreatment and I will have no part in it. We are here to Enlighten not make money. It is our God given duty to bring these heathens closer to God. That is not optional. But we can do so in a humane manner.".
Rising slowly the accountant looked on the verge of collapse.
"One more thing. I want the numbers of monthly releases doubled. Slaves should be encouraged to earn Enlightend status and be released. No more of this holding back slaves for economic reasons.".
"Yes sir I understand. You realize we'll need to double our stock of slaves to do this?" said the accountant.
"Yes I do, see to it immediately" he said as his accountant left and closed the door. Sitting in the dark Archbishop suddenly felt at ease. His burden lifted. It was a glourious day.

Takitoo sat browsing through the financial section of the Amarr news when her eyes went wide and her jaw dropped.
"He did what ???" she breathed ? After a short series of rapid keystrokes, she leans back, visibly stunned. "You have got to be kidding .." she whispers and with a delighted grin she swipes several military reports off the small worktable.
Takitoo triggers her holoreel and records a short message to be sent to a very particular pod pilot. His callsign (and most commonly used name, probably) was Archbishop.
"Honored Amarr,
Up until now you probably have never heard of me, just as up until now it was my desire to kill you. This stems from your treatment of a fellow Minmatar that you have subjected, or at least delivered to some less than ethical treatment at the hands of one of your sects.
At first I was angry with not only your people, but your god and my government. Now I am only angry with your people and my government. You have shown that you might still be misguided, but at least you strive for a goal that is noble on your own mind. This is largely because you are following your beliefs. I no longer have the desire to hunt you in some backwater spacestation and kill you as you are not the same man deserving of a lowly death. Your motives might not have changed, but your clarity has improved.
Consider yourself safe from my particular attention.
Takitoo, Gunner, Pilot, Minmatar."
After dictating the following she scrambles the message and sends it to the nearest relay station. Whether this "Archbishop" read it or not, she felt better now. And the reports on Amarr doctrine were getting a bit boring.
She looked around the small cabin, after trashing the reports, mumbling: "Now, where did I leave that GLB Magazine ?"

Shemar threw the samples from the latest photo shoot on his desk in frustration, wishing the year had 16 or more months. An incoming message caught his attention. It was from an old friend, one that had drifted apart, not in the best of ways.
"I think this may interest you" was the cryptic subject, followed by what appeared to be a report about the man known as 'Archbishop'.
Shemar sat back, after reading the report. "Yes, most interesting" he thought. The man who had recently made disgusting public displays of mistreatment of slaves had reconsidered. He was still responsible for enslaving thousands and supporting an oppresive regime that was based not only on slavery, but in also in keeping its own citizens in line by means of fear and superstition. The Archbishop's ideals were the complete opposites of Shemar's, who believed in freedom and self determination for all.
However, there was one part of this man that Shemar could finally understand. He too had strong beliefs and he too was compelled to see them to fruition.

The Caldari known as Witch Doctor emerged from his pod and began disconnecting his leads and throwing them down in frustration. The present campaign with his new organization was a dance without purpose involving shadowy parties and inscrutable spheres of influence in the lawless portions of space. The fighting was at once mind-numbing and breathtaking - titanic fleet battles that literally crushed even the most sophisticated ship's tactical displays, or mindless routines for days on end patrolling vacant systems. As he strode to the debrief center, his thoughts returned with longing to the struggle for the freedom of all individuals that continued to grip certain portions of Empire space.
As he checked his GalNet messages before entering the debriefing room, one message stopped his progress dead in its tracks. Although he had abandoned the war for freedom out of a belief that a destabilized Amarrian Empire no longer posed a long-term threat to the galaxy as a whole, he still maintained a network of intelligence contacts in the Empire on behalf of his old corporation, Freelance Unincorporated.
His eyes scanned a report from one such contact with increasing intensity. A brief smile flashed across his face, and Witch Doctor settled into a moment of reflection. For one with such stature as Archbishop to engage in such radical behavior change could only mean that epic changes were afoot in Empire. Caution and optimism wrestled for a conclusion.
His thoughts were interrupted by a perfunctory page over the intercom. Witch Doctor scooped up his combat data holorecordings and rose smartly from his desk. Such matters were behind him, for now, and his attention turned to Contraband's struggles in the unclaimed lands.

Before travelling to Amarr where he was now Archbishop had stopped by his plantation on Chaven. The slaves upon seeing his Prophecy enter orbit had cowered in terror. Lately their master had become erratic and unfocused casting aside the old ways in favor of harsher methods.
Yet the morning had started strangely. Instead of being awoken from the pens at 5am they weren't woken until 8am. Breakfast had been better then usual and for some odd reason they had been allowed time to mingle in the fields before work started.
A shuttle lowered from the golden warship above and settled on the landing platform near the factory. Archbishop emerged followed by four PIE marines. The slaves noticed he had an unusually happy expression on his face and actually stopped to pat a young Minmatar child on the head and throw a ball to another.
Moving over to the platform elevated over the fields he watched silently as the slaves worked in the fields. The day was warm but water was in abundance. Suddenly the break whistle rang. It was an hour early. The slaves looked around in confusion as they watched Archbishop join the serving line for drinks. The first slave approached and bowed to Archbishop as he hesitently took a cup of water.
"Good morning!" said the cloaked Admiral. The stunned slave just stood there and muttered back "gooood morrrning my Lord" confused as to what was next.
Archbishop nodded and the next slave took a cup of water and was greated by Archbishop. Standing there in the hot sun for 90 minutes he greated each of his 2,500 slaves in Chaven this way. To the occasional elderly slave he would instruct a servant to bring him a mat to lay on. The children were given religious toys and candy.
A truly unusual event for a slave.
As the shuttle left orbit the slaves on the planet returned to work. They felt more at ease noticing the numbers of slaver hounds had decreased and the Amarrian soldiers were not so heavily armed. They had been notified they'd be done with work at 3pm instead of the usual 8pm. They would then study until 9pm and have until midnight to themselves. Free time.... a true miracle to a slave.
Boarding the massive Battlecruiser Archbishop strode to the bridge. He had a new look of contentment on his face as he sat in his command chair.
"Set course for Amarr" he ordered as the helmsman said "Aye" and the giant warship began to move from orbit. As the ship headed into warp the stars moved to streaks of light and a nebula cast an errie blue glow through the main viewport. Archbishop sat back and relaxed. His anger finally gone. He was ready to return to the work of the Lord.

The Padre leaned back in his seat as he read the data scrolling past.
So much easier to turn someone toward God when he's not in pain, or too tired and hungry to care, he thought. Doubling slaves bought and doubling the release of those with the Word sooner.
Not too bad on the surface. But the source of the scourge would not be unhappy. There were still countless Amarrians who bred slaves for the auctions, who never thought to enlighten them to God, who only had consideration for their own pockets. They'd be seeing this as an increased source of income.

Your esteemed Archbishop.... what ever
I do not know how to tell you this except bluntly. So here it goes: I have had the privilege to be acquired as an employee of one these prescribed camps/factories. And I have survived it due to pure luck nothing more.
And I can tell you by first hand experience a 50% (Regardless of 'yard stick' of measure) raise in anyway is just laughable, if it werenĘt so insanely grotesque to start.
Only half of the slave would be abused, raped or killed? Even the double of added notorious (What ever might pass for it in your institution) would be like giving hypo sprays to burn victims still a blaze. Vitnessed enough rodent roasting and lets not forget the all important crowd pleaser - last desperate measure cannibalism.
Working hour reduced to 6 hours? Do you seriously think that your slaves work 100% of the time anyway? If you are that misled let me open your eyes: NO! At max they run at 30-40%. Every time one of you guards - sorry foremen - turn their heads, everyone slacks off. It's the way to survive. If you wanna see the scars on my wrists left of times I hung shackled to mine processor but dozing, just to make it trough to the next day.
Then lets take a look at scripture time as well. "It's not work but study." Let me tell you about scripture class: It's that time after work that you get a default whipping/beating/*****if you lack even a bit in you sitting stance or voice. Some times the punishment something else: arbitrary beheadings, shuttle hoists or walking in broken ceraloy while siting scripture.
Then there is night time: that calm and quiet time of surprise beatings, rapes and other amusements of the guards and visitors/customers. Even today if someone screams in agony while sticking their hand into a cap circuit or a foot stuck under a loose large cargo container - Just reminds me sooou well of the to 'clam' nights in your kinds service.
Let me guess, right now every one Amaar is screaming outrage and deception, but you do let the Sister of EVE do humanitarian health control and aid. Blah! That is the best scam work in the universe. Those 'slaves' that the SOE meet are the tamed household 'staff'. Turncoats that have been just mentally broken into servitude. After the SOE leave the 'company' gets a PR-boost and the guards get their bonuses and any loot that SOE might have left behind to the slaves.
Then there are the surprise visits of the dignitaries - Priests, the wealthy and powerful. To feed their whims and desirers. However low and revolting that may be: the Cula-car visits take sort of a Limb-roe custard prize. Scripture class/camp visits to show of the low life animals as an educational purpose. Just to make sure none of your offspring ever forget their superior place. One special event at any Cula-Car is ISK feast - let me explain - A slave child is acquired, often of Minmatar blood. Then force fed (usually a bribe of food was all it took) ISK credit chips; the victim was tied up and hung from neck and feet at about 3 meters up. All Amaar kids where given sticks.. scripture was sited.. and credit chips where reclaimed with by brute force. Odd how much physical damage the body can take.
As you might have noticed I have some deep feelings about slavery, be it Amaar or any other - so I will leave out a lot here.
Coming back to my main point. A Slaves life is still a slaves life no matter if only a 50% slave.. it just is not enough! I dare you to cast of that high n mighty robe, strip naked and walk down to that 'pit of hell in EVE' that you call you factory and take up a place even for a day. I dare you!

Rest assured a content slave is more willing to work at full capacity. Computer studies have determined what the average Minmatar work output should be per hour. Slaves know this limit and know they must meet or exceed it or risk reeducation. While I no longer believe in using physical violence toward most slaves I do still realize it may be necessary on a very limited basis. Still I believe slaves that are of higher morale will work better. I guess time will bear me out. Either way as our purpose here is to Enlighten that is the true test.

I have never beheaded a slave nor do I believe scripture time is torture time. Only part of the scripture time is in formal lessons. The rest is for self study and prayer. My slaves are given weekly examinations which test their knowledge. Those slaves who show aptitude and are more advanced on the path to enlightenment are tutors to those who lag behind. Again I now realize this is the path to enlightenment not the pain and toture you described.

Slaves are given a great gift.... that of Enlightenment. In the end as they realize God is speaking to them and wants their service they are grateful for the chance to become part of the holy Empire. At first they may be resistant to change but over time they come to understand the Amarrian way is the only way. Enlightened slaves earn their freedom through faith and become an integral cog in the wheel that is our mighty Empire. The Ammatar are truly a people all Minmatar can aspire to.
As for going to the factory floor for a day I have already done this. I often make surprise visits to my plantations and factories to observe the work of the slaves. Likewise I've been known to appear unannounced in the back of classrooms as they study scripture. It fills my heart with joy to see Minmatar beasts truly come to God, admit their sins and ask for Gods mercy, you can't imagine the joy that brings my heart.
No the slaves in my care are not treated as you described. All slavers are not the same. While I was angry for awhile and took a cruel side I quickly realized my own unhappiness was caused by the fact I strayed from the path of Enlightenment and instead looked at slaves as only property. Now I have returned to the realization that slaves are there to be brought to God as a less developed race. The Minmatar need our help. I am there for them in their time of need.

Perhaps Archbishop, if you were to remove the guards, pay the slaves for their labor, they might actually WANT to work for you and thus be far more productive. Employment could be dependent on a number of hours per day for your scriptures.

Well since you feel so utterly sure of your self and your gift. I propose a test:
You have just been entrusted by the Amaar State Police (Did I just let that secret slip, whopsie) the rehabilitation of one Khaminar Murino. Knowing well enough what exotic flora of ways you have for turning high profile cases like Miss Murino. Knowing well enough you will not stop at nothing to turn her, no matter what I say or plead. You want to bask in that glory of Mastery once she breaks.
If that day comes: Lock your self up alone in a room with her and one Khumaak.
If you make it out alive and unharmed: You win If she manages to escape: She wins her freedom, let her go If your seriously hurt or... worse: I win

As others have said, this is only a small step. But it's a step in the right direction.
It is not enough, but its more than most would expect. And if their master greets them like this more often he may see them as humans, rather than livestock. And from there the path of freedom will emerge.
However the religious Indoctrination is intolerable, we have a rich tribal heritage. It is our greatest strength and our main weakness.
