We currently have no ETA for the server to be brought back online, however we will update this forum thread as and when more information becomes available.
We apologize for this unexpected downtime, and any inconvenience it may cause.

I think this is something we are starting to get used to.
Unfortunatley, In australia, DT hits us at 9pm, so we get 3 hours after work, and then hope to christ CCP have their arses in gear for the DT ..... I would say, out of the last 20 DT's, atleast 50% have had to be extended for some reason or another, and yet, I have all the patience in the world for CCP, the work they are doing and the efforts they put into trying to get something that is broke, un-broke ...

UPDATE: Tranquility Offline at 11:45 UTC
Thanks for keeping us in the loop.
I appreciate being informed more than anything, it's better than most companies treat their customers, and at least it doesn't leave us hanging and wondering whether it's just an issue on our end.
I know it means you now have people such as the first response in the thread who are going to now complain due to the issues prior to DT [I was having them too but so what? I mean, turn it off and then on again is a fix for 99% of all problems, and that includes large IT and small. ;) hehe] but because you were open about it, there's a lot of us who can breathe a little easier, go ahead and make some coffee (or go ahead and rage if we were just about to load in that last skill prior to June 4) which we wouldn't be able to do if we were sitting here having to wonder if it was our ISP, or some sort of temporary routing outage...
So... I guess what I'm saying is ... <3.

You dont have a lot of computer related issues do you? Often times the simplest solution is to reboot. If the issue had existed for 2 hours and they knew DT was coming, why not go ahead, bring the servers back up, and if they are the same...then rebooting wont work. Shouldnt blame someone for at least trying the first solution in computer troubleshooting...reboot. |

Nah, had 3 toons logged in prior to DT and they all dropped out 1 at a time (eve server is offline; socket was closed, you have no internet connection to the server) then had trouble getting back in. So chances of this being related - pretty good

Double-Derp, the servers have been dropping people for the last two hours before DT in their masses. So, I have to agree with Steinj why bother bring the servers back up on schedule when there was clearly an underlying problem. |

I can see most of you have not played Star Trek Online. The down time on here compared to there is nothing. On this game you do no have the lag or the emergency maintenance that they do. It is like every other day. Also when the server goes down over here you know that the problem is going to get fixed. On Star Trek Online they just make things worse. They add content without fixing the problems they already had so this new content adds even more problems. I am glad that these people take pride in making a great game for us to play. |

Yeah could be physical networking problem at CCP gateway or load balancing router but...
I wonder if maybe they didn't quite know what they were doing with SSO (Single Sign On) and through the miracle of HTML exposed some of the logon stuff in a less than secure way.
Used to be the rule of thumb for high risk systems was to keep all the domain logon security behind firewall and only really let logon in hands of domain servers and special purpose (limited functionality) web to domain logon server.
But there were easier/more flexible ways to go direct through web servers if you wanted to gamble that your web servers were 100% perfectly secure. And if you were a real target it usually only took a few days to find out that they weren't as secure as you thought...especially if content qnd function changed often.
But I am so terribly out of date I have no more than vague idea how its done securely or commonly (not always the same thing) nowadays.
I wonder about the web server and SSO side of thing because lately when EVE has disconnects -- I also tend to see a few SYN and ACK attacks on my router and EVE ports. As if some program monitoring traffic in the middle was attacking in both directions. |

Yup users are free gerbils and lab rats. But FYI CCP should be able to connect their own in-house test network to their outbound link. That way they can see the whole round trip to know if its problem on their end or generic Internet.
I suspect bringing servers up had lots more to do with upper management wishful thinking that problem might just die away on its own or better yet lost program bits on server were responsible and everything would be fixed by reboot.
Considering the typical time for real debug efforts -- attempting to fix it by reboot is where you typically start. At most you waste 15-30 minutes and eliminate problem being memory bits temporarily flipped by radiation etc. ECC memory only takes care of so many flipped bits per word. |

Resource fairness? You are way behind on Odyssey news. No alternating DT is needed. Ice belts to anomalies includes distributing daily resources spawned throughout whole day. You can be sure ore will follow as soon as CCP is sure how to keep amount of resources tuned between hi, lo and null sec. |

Exactly how long do you wait between patches? How big do you allow next accumulated patch to grow?
Problems:
(1) issues with patches do not always show up on day 1 or show only in presence of later pieces of total change placed in later patches. So a few days wait between patches is good but longer maybe only delaying discovery.
(2) The more you hold onto unchanged copy of software...the longer it takes to fix current bug list.
On the whole CCP does a extremely good job pushing out patches in small manageable chunks without holding back overall rate of fixes and progress - Although I occasionally question the wisdom of particular patches being passed out without extra care (especially ones with which need to evolve full in game impacts) .
I sort of got my fingers crossed about Odyssey: not so much from code standpoint as much as from viewpoint of how the in game player dynamics will resolve. CCP may well have misestimated how players will react. More fortunes could be gained and closed than expected and more POS closed. Should be exciting and after all shouldn't CCP get some thrills from the economic-political resolution as well?
P.S. CCP has not had to do it in a while but they can reload EVE to a prior day's software and data in about 6 hours if nothing else goes wrong hardware-wise. So its more a question of when things have gone so terribly wrong that fail back is required. RAID/backup sites do nothing until critical error is detected. |

It reminded me of all the fun I had playing Eve a few years before, except it was free, and I've been a lifelong Trekkie, so I thought it was a better choice for me. I had just made Captain and got myself a Defiant-class ship, which I had been looking forward to since I joined. But the day I got the ship there was a bug in which you couldn't assign bridge officers to your ship, so I couldn't take my shiny new Defiant out for some pew-pew.
In my boredom, I reinstalled Eve and began a trial, just to make sure it would run on my current laptop and that I still liked it. Within a few hours I had reactivated my account. STO probably fixed that bug the next day, but I've never logged in to find out. |

EVE Offline can only pull data from the servers every so often; too much asking, and TQ will see it as a potential DDOS attack and shut the site out.
I'd wager that TQ's six thousand online are residuals from log-out attempts that weren't completed properly; the system has to time the sessions out before they'll stop registering as 'active connections'. I can't get rid of my darn signature!-á Oh, wait.... |

Oh, and alternate the down-times, so the other half of the world can get good resources without having to play at 4 in the morning.. Wow, you really know absolutely nothing about how database clusters work, do you? Hint #1: It's not "a server". It's hundreds of blades all hooked together, with assorted support hardware attached.
Yes, Here we call those "Blade Servers" - and the term servers fit the mood better than typing out "get an extra hundred blades all hooked together, with support hardware attached"... that wasn't quite the rant I was going for. Besides, I have you to come edit for me. :) thanks for that. and no, I don't have any idea how database clusters work, that's why I pay somebody else to do it. I am an American, that's how we roll. - I tell you what, shoot me a few million bucks, and I'll figure it out. the rant worked tho.. It gave me something to do while waiting, and see?.. it fixed it. is up now. XD - It also gave all you guys something to co-rant about, FTW! |

Oh, and alternate the down-times, so the other half of the world can get good resources without having to play at 4 in the morning.. You really have no idea how server clusters work do you ? You're picturing a PC box in a room somewhere, aren't you ?
Umm, ya. aren't you? - no.. actually I picture racks of aluminum. probably flat, charcoal grey in color. (that is a popular hardware color) filling both sides of the room, with a walkway in the center. A metal or glass door, or both. I'm at a loss as to the cooling hardware included, as I live in a more temperate climate.. maybe they just have an open top, and let it snow all over them. lets see, power supplies at the bottom of the racks for good weight foundation. sliding treys/drawers to make access easier, wires and lights everywhere, and about eleventy-two bazillion little gremlins (and 1 big one) running about pulling and biting at wires here and there. (hence the unexpected downtime) - which.. is happening again now, so I came to rant some more, and give you guys something else to inquire whether I know how works, or looks. :) |

Oh, and alternate the down-times, so the other half of the world can get good resources without having to play at 4 in the morning.. Exactly how long do you wait between patches? How big do you allow next accumulated patch to grow? Problems: (1) issues with patches do not always show up on day 1 or show only in presence of later pieces of total change placed in later patches.
This - (and your other post) I found to be the most enlightening of all the responses to my rant. Bravo! - No calling me out on my lack of familiarity with CCP's equipment? no trash talking? and an included piece of Intel that made me stop to consider.. There are civilized ppl out there after all. - You Sir, have my respect. :) |
