Pull up a sandbag my friend and let me tell you the story of Ourzad. A story of arrogance and over confidence. A story of victory and defeat. A story of friendships lost and regained. A story like the Alamo and 'The 300' where the victor was left decimated and the defeated rose from the ashes like the Phoenix.
Arzad - a one station FW system in low sec Devoid. An Amarr system that was taken by the Minmatar over 2 years ago, before system ownership mattered in FW. Which fought off two serious attempt to retake it since it came to matter. For two years, Arzad was home to the (European centric) Minmatar alliance, "Iron Oxide".
Ourzad!
Like any good story, pride comes before a fall. We were leet and we knew it. We owned FW space, where we roamed the Amarr ran from us. Where they stood and fought, they stood and died. Twice the Amarr fail cascaded and rebuilt only to fail again and Iron Oxide were prominent in each defeat.
In late December of last year, the Amarr were failing as usual and we gained a new corp with a Titan, something we'd been wanting for some time. It would allow us to project ourselves where ever we wanted, to take fights we wouldn't be able to gather in time for. In the first month we dropped everywhere. We dropped on a Kestrel once, on a small gang of SBs another time and certainly on anything bigger than a Cruiser.
Be careful what you wish for! The Amarr added our Titan pilot to their watch list and simply logged when he came online. The warzone became a desert. We spent hours sat on the Titan POS waiting for a drop that never came. We became fat and lazy like so many, so called leet alliances with caps. You know who I mean.
We became bored, complacent, people started to bicker in our ranks. We allied ourselves with some large pirate alliances and stepped up to take some cap fights we had no business taking. We were sub cap specialists and were out of our comfort zone, nevermind our wallet capabilities. We were pwned.
Weazls broke from our alliance and FW. They left for Molden Heath to become pirates and took around a third of our numbers. With them went our most prominent FC and our logistics wing in particular was decimated. The Amarr giant stirred in his high sec hideaway and took note.
We were left with some good FCs, but we stumbled in the dark, uncertain which direction to take. Waited for things to settle, returned to small gang warfare in FW but lacked focus. For a month we never dropped from the Titan, didn't even gather at the Titan POS. A member of the Titan corp became disgruntled and finally moved against us. All did not go according to plan, but the Titan died and the Amarr rejoiced... and gathered their numbers.
The assault on Ourzad began on the 2nd of May. It initially appeared as simply a farming drive for LP. Most of the warzone tends to flip back and forth and the Amarr were definitely on a drive. Usually though only a few cheeky ones actually have the nerve to hit on the home systems like Ourzad.
However, by the 10th of May it was clear a more organised drive was going on and a CTA was called. The Amarr have always been strong in the late US/Aussie timezone and were pressing hard during that period. Each morning they would drive the system to 20-30% contested and we would plex it back in the evenings. Then their fleets started appearing in our peak time, in surprisingly large numbers. The Amarr had always had the numbers, but not the quality and we were used to slaughtering them. We leeroyed in, but for once found them competently led. While we won some, we lost others and our losses were not consistent with our perceived level of leetness. We attempted to raise our game and while our successes improved we still struggled to keep the system contestation levels down, although we survived the weekend when the Amarr were at their most strongest.
As the week of the 13th May began the Amarr changed their tactics. They had been pressing both Ourzad and it's neighbouring system Tararan. Tararan was home to our feeder corp Iron Nation, but this corp had been hard hit by the leaving of Weazls. Their CEO was a Weazl alt and the corp had effectively been abandoned while we had all dithered. The Amarr temporarily abandoned their drive on Ourzad to concentrate exclusively on Tararan, they set up a death star in the system and brought in hundreds of reships. For four days glorous battles raged. Late Night Alliance, another Minmatar FW alliance came over to help us out in the US timezone. But it was all to no avail. Tararan fell on Thursday the 16th and the Amarr giant turned back to it's real goal, Ourzad.
I pull no punches. Panic reigned in Iron Oxide. There were calls to abandon Ourzad and run for Huola, turtle up with LNA. The weekend was upon us when the Amarr were at their most dominant, they had hundreds, we had 25 regulars. It would be gone before the weekend was over the defeatists were crying.
LNA rallied to our call, the Weazls came back and the Heretics (the good ones) came to our aid. Somehow we survived the weekend. But at 57% contested, the Amarr went into overdrive determined to take it from us during the week of the 20-24th.
An emergency meeting was called within Iron Oxide. It was decided, we were too small in number and too isolated to remain in Ourzad. However, we couldn't be seen to just give up and run. We were going to fight to the end, it was no longer about the system, it was about the pew, we were going to make the Amarr pay in blood, fight for every plex... |

We rallied, we regained our focus, we rebuilt our Logistic wing. We swallowed humble pie and started to rebuild friendships, we brought Iron Nation into the alliance and sorted out that mess. We opened our fleets to new members of the militia and integrated with them. We started to come back, more and more battles we took, we started to pwn. The battles got larger and more bloody. We dominated and the system contestation fell back to a low of 4.7% on the Friday.
The Amarr were all but broken, but we were at the weekend again, which traditionally they dominate. Both sides rallied troops for the period immediately after Saturday's downtime. The Amarr rallied faster and got 25 people on line and set up in a novice plex with Logi. With just 12 on line we shiped into 3 Navitas and a load of Tristans and went in.
The battle was a classic, it went on for 20 minutes with both sides trying desperately to break the other logistics chain. Both FCs reshipped mid fight into neuting Punishers. Finally we overcame them and the survivors broke and ran. We capped the plex and then bounced straight to the small plex and slaughtered them again.
A medium was up. A fifty man Amarr Cruiser gang was reported incoming which included 9 Augorors. We were 24 by then. We shipped into 5 Guardians with an Assimmu, Curse and a mixed bag of SFIs, Ruptures and Mallers. Another large logistics dominated battle occurred. In the middle of which a friendly hard pressed logistics pilot was heard to shout - "Are we actually killing any of them?" We were, when the three battles were over, 117 Amarr ships were dead, while we lost just 2.
http://eve-kill.net/?a=kill_related&kll_id=17932074
They were straight back on us though. Three more large frigate and dessie battles occurred in novice and small plexes and we slaughtered them each time almost without loss. A large neutral gang came in at one point and we slaughtered them too. Dotlan reported 400 kills in Ourzad in the 3 hours after downtime that day. 9 of them were ours.
The Amarr were broken, that is clear. But those three adrenaline pumped hours took their toll on us. We were exhaused and it was grand prix time. People started to log, to be honest we were expecting it to remain quiet until late evening when the Aussies started to wake up.
However, the Amarr couldn't give up. To give up would have led to another fail cascade. But they couldn't beat us in a straight fight. They had thrown their best at us and it was a real pro force that had come at us too. Yet outnumber at least 2:1 we had held for 3 weeks, growing stronger each day and had absolutely trounced them in the final 6 battles. What could they do?
The only thing they could. They turned to Fweddit. Fweddit ran a CTA for 30 hours and brought in around a 1000 pilots into system during that time. Never less than 100 in system at a time and billions of isk worth of ships handed over to them to allow them to ship for every plex. We were just 9 when they first arrived.
We blue balled them.
Arzad fell to the Amarr at 1703 hrs on Sunday evening 26th of May. But it will always be Ourzad! Thankyou LNA, Weazls, Heretics (the good ones) and the others that pitched in to help, we will remember you. But most of all...
'Remember Ourzad!'

A nice write up with one very big mistake:
The invasion of Ourzad from the iWhip point of view started when a new FC in-the-making asked the question: Can we take a Minmatar Stronghold? Can we use DUSTies to our advantage? This has rarely been done before because in previous months the Minmatar EU / Russian TZ would plex in back up again. So plans were made, DUST corps contacted, logistics moved (and hardly not billions) timetables planned and FC's announced. We had everything planned for a 72 hour invasion and fights. It didn't last even 48 hours and no proper fights.
It was short because the DUSTies did a great job taking almost every district. No fights is more a complaint to the entire Minmatar militia, they had one right there, but never took it. |

Good write up. I'm sure it will derail quickly so one quick point:
1) LP store could use some 'tools' to protect your system during off peak hours. You described our experience when Siseide or Dal fell with Euro plexers vs our US TZ. |

You were only fighting the Sahtogas guys up until the last two days(mostly). We only half-heartedly plexed the area until tararan and Arzad were directly in our path.
Several times we had Arzad up to around 50% and the relief crew that was expected wasn't showing up. A few of the other groups had RL issues after we took Tararan. The first two weeks of plexing/fighting after Tararan was captured was meant to get you guys scared enough to batphone your allies, which you did.
We weren't sure if fweddit was going to come, so the plan was to keep up the pressure until the batphones went unanswered. We knew if we kept at it, all it would take is one single TZ with no resistance before Arzad would be dangerously close to being captured.

PIE and a caldari corp I forget the name of were hitting it hard starting on the day we captured Tararan. It's pretty devastating.

But what we don't know is why you continue to preach this after you left faction warfare. I'm sure this is part of your master blue-ball plan and you'll spin some epic yarn about how "you didn't want that system anyways" and "we let you have it blueballs lelel" or "we could take it back at any time". You don't have to move your stuff if you manage to keep the system or earn it back, and you seem pretty confident you'll get it back . Why not just buy a couple cruisers, frigs, and dessies? You managed to slaughter hundreds of Amarr ships with only a handful of ships surely you don't need all your things to get your system back! |

Calm down mate, you won the battle for Arzad, why are you so mad?
Because dropping fw then moving assets is easier to do when your assets are substantial.

It was a bit like 300, at least the first hour of the film. Lots of fights, high efficiency.
But then for the last bit when Xerxes and his hordes show up for the big show down it's a bit different because that crippled chap says "Sorry, they've f*cked off".
After that Xerxes and his hordes have to walk in circles around a big rock all weekend.
I can't decide whether roflsocks, dcm or templar dane is the crippled chap.

Just a little FYI here.
One. IO was the dominate force in your TZ after inferno. Before that they were scared to engage Zero Heavy. That means they spent about a year being top dog in one TZ while amarr had almost no corps what so ever in that same TZ. Grats on that guys.
Two. Amarr did take Arzad from you before inferno. You took it back in record time but we still took it. Ya know that whole time zone thing can be a *****.
Three. IO and friends pulled some dirty tricks to get where you are and keep Arzad. How about bugging every plex right after DT? It happened for weeks on end before inferno. Let you keep all they systems and start in t3. |

1. We turned the tide on Neph and co long before Inferno, the key to this was breaking his Baddon gangs which we did even before Annah K became the Euro prime time FC. Zero were undoubtedly a worthy (if risk averse) adversary however.

I approve of the OP Writeup.
To many people including CCP, a few prominent bloggers and many an IWhip pilot think this was a two day affair. It was not.
Again thanks to all involved ESPECIALLY the unseen soldiers that made it happen behind the scenes.
Think of IWhip as the Army, once they roll in with their loud music and heavy machines it is all but over, But other smaller forces always spearhead the assault.
It would be wise for LNA and the Eszur crowd to pay attention here. While there might be a few skirmishes in the week/s leading up to it.....Once IWhip leadership pushes that BIG RED BUTTON you will know the army is on it's way and you should start packing when you hear that rock music blaring out of the Egg undock.
In the meantime dont mind the few covops/recon ships flying around Houla. Dont even pay no mind to the small skirmishes held in Dal and on the kourm gate. Tis just the Amarr derping around and definitely not trying to get a feel for when and how to strike.
/me listens.....
