I'm a paranoid type of person. I always think a link is going to lead to a trojan, and the constant forum warnings don't help that paranoia. I never click links from emails claiming to be sent by CCP. I've heard people talk about how the new launcher is vulnerable to hijacking. I've heard horror stories about entire accounts cleared of their assets. I always worry that all my hard work will be illegitimately stolen from me. It's one thing to be scammed, but it's quite another to be an actual victim of account theft.
I remember Guild Wars 2's launch, where thousands of players, including several of my friends, were victims of account theft. Some people blamed the launcher. Others blamed phishing emails. Still others blamed the victims for using RMT, or account sharing. I myself was a victim of account theft in my early MMO gaming days, and losing everything I had worked for left a big impression on me.
So, I've always wondered... what happens to victims of account theft in EVE? What can CCP do? What is their policy?
I'm aware that CCP does not practice rollbacks, at least as far as I know they do not. I'm aware that things sold on the market will not be refunded. So, what actually happens to victims? Are they simply given back their account and generally expected to start anew and rebuild their character's wealth? Do they ever find out who did it? What happens to those who traded items from a stolen account? Are the items tracked?
I'm genuinely curious. Ch+½j+ì Katrina Oniseki ~ (RDC) Chief Operations Officer ~ [I-RED] Sub-Director of Public Relations |

I think it is handled on a case-by-case basis.
From what I've read, CCP does as much as they can for the victim, but that doesn't always mean a complete restoration. |

Really...go to the local shop. Buy a roll of tinfoil and make a hat.
CCP does nothing depending on the situation.
If it's a trojan you collected by using a wrong link...not CCP's fault. If you shared your log in details with someone/something else....not CCP's fault.
If there is a mass account theft through the launcher as some of your fellow tinfoil hatters think happens...then there will be an issue. But do you have PROOF that there is a leak....NO.
So stop with the tinfoil hatting stuff.
If you don't like the risk...disconnect your internet connection and play a single player game.
If it's connected through the internet, there is a risk... When a WoW player leaves to return to WoW, the avg. IQ of both games rises. Request to CCP: Please patch stupidity out of the game for Winter 2013. Professional Forum Thread locker. |

Yeah. I figured as much. I did hear a while back that anything traded on the open market cannot be restored because they don't want to reverse transactions made by unaware legitimate parties simply trying to shop.

I was asking what happens. I wasn't suggesting it will.
No tinfoil hat here.

The most CCP can really do is restore any isk that was in the wallet taken, or any items that havn't already been sold by the hackers. I once podded myself by blowing a huge fart. |

I know i have talked to people who have had this happen in the past and trying my best to remember exactly what happened...
First the account gets frozen which means that neither you or the person who stole the account cant log in and cause more damage, and i imagine its also to make it as easy as possible for CCP to look trough logs and similar without more being created (pure guess here).
If the account is found to be stolen i think they will return the account with whatever assets that account has right then and there. No other assets will be returned, ISK or ships and SP wont get reimbursed for the time the account was frozen.
If you were not truthful about it being stolen i THINK you can get banned but not sure about this. Phoibe Enterprises official recruitment thread The Eve Reader - -áAudio Recordings of Eve Chronicles

I wasnt trolling. Most of the times that your account gets stolen its through your own error which likely means that CCP does nothing about it. I have been playing for 3 years and never seen or heard about leaks from CCP side, even when CCP servers were attacked... When a WoW player leaves to return to WoW, the avg. IQ of both games rises. It's a case-by-case basis.
If a theft gets reported or their auto-detection methods raise flags, they ban the account to block access and investigate, including trying to reach you via your contact information etc. If all is kosher they unban; otherwise they do try to roll back or give back what was stolen, I think. |
