I downloaded the Eve Character Manager, and the first thing I noticed is that it asked me for my Eve username and password.
Excuse me? My username and password? Could anyone tell me why I should provide a 3rd party program with this information in order for it to perform skill caclulations and the like?
I am surely missing something, here.

It doesn't work right now, so don't even bother.
And it's so it can log into the My Character page (see above).

I have it but i just click cancel and it lets me on. As it's from eve-I it should re-liable but i still would'nt risk it.
From what i can tell it downloads your atriputes and current skills. You can manual input them in soo theres not really much point in giving them your name/password. _______________________________________ (\_/) (O.o) (> <) This is Bunny. it wont work atm anyway and is the reason the My Character is down.
anyway it needed your details to log into the My Character feature and download your characters skill details, there was a safe mode option, however i logged into it with my account details and had no problems, and many others could tell u the same :)

I think it is time to dispell a few rumors and myths about this program. The new location to get it and discuss it is at http://www.eve-ffet.com/forum/index.php. Suggest bookmarking this and telling your friends about it.
There are a team of new developers working on it and there are new features already under development.
As far as "not working", not entirely true. What is not working is the myeve character sheet as this is deliberately turned off. ECM needs this feature to do auto-updates to your character (in the ECM tool, not the game!). The reason is that there is a bug in ECM that hammers the myeve server a bit too much. Those will a lot of alts really stress this out.
The reason ECM does this bad behavior has been isolated. The fix is not quite as easy and I'll save everyone the boring details as to why. The development team knows about it and have been working with some key developers at CCP (they have been quite helpful).
Despite this, you can still use the tool manually. A bit of a PITA for a new user to load their character by hand, but worth the effort.
As far as user name and password, you are not required to enter these. Another option exist to connect in safe mode. What this does is open a mini-browser to the myeve site (same as the My Character link in the frame), where you must enter your ID and password there.
ECM to put it simply, grabs the XML file sent by this site and loads it into ECM. Of course, this feature has to be reactivated and it will be once the fix for slamming the server is implemented and passes testing.
To put a nice ending to this post, there are new features planned that I think all will really enjoy (I won't say what they are yet, don't ask! ) This includes new docs as they need an overhaul too.
Also, the above link has a FAQ section, and all new characters visiting the forum should read. They are stickied, so should not be a problem finding. But I think it worth mentioning (covered in the FAQs) that the new tool still will not allow you to change skills, you must do this in the game and the game is still the ONLY place you can do this.
And lastly, all users of ECM should have now switched to manual update mode, instead of the default auto. How to do this is also covered in the FAQ.

Yes, you are.
It's a program that pulls your character info from the myeve site. It's very difficult for a program to parse your character info if it can't access your characters.

Please make sure you leave it on manual update - or it will be back offline just as quick.

Well it's looks like people are spreading the word about ECM's new home.
Just to fill you in, the next gen of ECM - aka EMS - has been put on a temp. hold, thanks to my job kicking in, hey what am I to do I need cash, and they are offering me overtime....
Some *features* that EMS will have:
Less stress on the eve-online servers for those people with 50 gazillion accounts. A new approach to updates. A all new interface. Cleaner code so that bugs can be found and fixed faster. Easier tracking of bugs.
And to the OP:
We require your Username / Password so that we can download your character data from the server, and allow you to work on live data and not 5 hours old data. There is a manual option, and due to some feedback on that option it's being re-vamped in the new EMS to be truly manual, instead of using an IE window within the application...
BTW the delay may only be a week at the most... I'm still aiming at a working automatic download from the eve servers by the end of november, XMas this year should see a few of the upgrades put in place for ship fit, new sig builder, mapping utils, and the most important part the actual character planer...

Yep, seems like it is down still. I have been trying to access it to get the new version, but the site is not up.
Eve-I has seemed to disappear from the map as well.

Yeah, their site says it has been restored (until CCP kills it again lol).
And glad to see you guys might get some stability. As your site has been a bit flaky as of late. I want to be monitored from 5 continents... Which 2 got left out?

I have ~20 skills under Missile tree in CM and I dont get any errors messages about unknown skills so you might have patched CM wrong.
