Edited by: Vladimir Shiranov on 24/09/2005 00:59:42 Like many here, I started off in this game when a friend of mine gave me a trial account(in this case my brother). Instead of starting off as a boring miner or industrialist - I was too take a more exciting route, pirating(YARRRRRRRR) I've seen many threads in the forums saying that newbies cannot pvp - that it requires months or years of skill training and investment, but I was eventually convinced this was not true.
Thank you pirates who have published guides in this forum - they are a blessing to me.
My setup is listed here - it's simple(I'm not good nor creative)
4x rocket launchers 1x AB 1x scrambler 1x webbifier(2x scramblers vs those stupid miners with WCS) 1x Capcitator Power Relay, 1x Small armor repair.
Day 1: 1 mil isk grant from brother Did tutorial - read up on combat. Decided to use a rocket kestrel, before going to my final setup, I used a small shield booster and a civillian shield boost amp - this was not particulary effective due to the fact that most people ran from me.
Day 2: First Kill My first kill was an innocent mining osprey - poor soul was mining alone, unescorted, defenseless. I turned on my AB and moved towards him - he sat their and mined. I hit my warpscrambler and my webbifier, and opened fire. He powered up his shields - but was quickly overwhelmed. He died fairly quick. I managed to warp scramble his pod, but he gave me a nice FU when asked to pay up ransom, I podded him(not smart)
Day 3: Big Money!
My second encounter with another vessel today, found a caracal npcing, I, not knowing about the missile nerf, believed I was serverely outmatched,(I figured 150 damage from those missiles was instadeath for me) I decided to attack anyways - thank god for the missile "nerf", I managed to repair his damage while ransoming the poor soul for a good 1 million isk. Thats enough to buy 5 kestrels.
Later - I ran into a mining barge, he fired 5 Vespa drones at me - I managed to kill them off whilr running my repairer, I killed the last one off when I was in hull. I convoed the person, and managed to obtain 5 million for my troubles.
I saw a ferox - and figuring that I'd die smiling - I engaged it. I died very very fast. I'll try not to engage battlecruisers from now on in a kestrel.
Day 4: Big Game
Today I engaged something I figured would kill me instantly, a Prophecy battlecruiser, Luckily for me, I managed to kill off his drones and his guns didnt hit me. Unfortunately, I couldn't break his tank. I called for my brother, who came in to help with his ship - I managed to get 10 mil out of that encounter.(Dunno what share my brother took, but 10 mil is alot for me)
Later in the day, I saw another ferox - hoping for the quick isk I got from the prophecy, I engaged it, I ended dieing very fast to his assault launchers :(
Heres the end of my tale - this game is very fun and I wish I had more time to play it, but college isn't any time to slack off. Within 14 days, I had a 1.9 mil isk bounty on my head, was had succeeded with a kestrel in ransoming or killing
1x Osprey 1x Prophecy(Woot!) 1x Mining Barge(I don't know which model) 1x Interon MK5 1X Comdorant 1x Kestrel
Total isk made from ransoms - 30 mil Total isk made from sale of loot 15 mil Total isk made overrall - 45 mil - 1 mil loan = 44 million isk. No begging, no scamming.

I woud pay too if i was faceing to loose my shipe to a 14day old guy.
but always nice to see the new guys can get some pvp too.
if you keep up the work and training, you will get your fist bs kills in 3 weeks, if you use a ferox right.

A ray of light thru the darkness of the forums...
Glad you are enjoying EVE so far, and being smart about the game instead of trying to kill BS in a Frig then whining on forums that you died. This thread is proof that in EVE even the 'noobs' can have fun and be effective in anything that WANT to do. Most people do not have that state of mind when they join EVE, they whine that they will never be able to do what the vets are doing, and blah blah blah.

Edited by: Vaevectia on 24/09/2005 04:33:10 You killed a Caracal?
I have a feeling that I could just sit still and not fight back for at least 40-50 to a kestrel fully equipped before I even really felt a dent :/ That's insane.
EDIT: I'm equipped with assault launchers, he must have had heavies. I think a caracal would mince you without even having to try if they were equipped like mine.
Good work on picking the right targets and I hope you stay :)

You'd be very suprised how much damage a rocket kestrel can do it a caracal.

Starting with frigate 4/ SC3 Electronics 3 should take him overnight Navigation 2/ Propulsion Jamming 1 in around 2-3 hours
Mechanic 1/Repair systems 1 - 1 hour
Engineering 2, Science 1, Energy Grid upgrades 2, around 4 hours.
Easily possible.

It's great to see someone go their own path! Having some brains and balls goes a long way, even for a week old character. Hope you continue, eve is an addictive thing. Don't get in a too big ship too quick, remember to SPECIALIZE. Learn to use the scanner, and maybe find a corp to take you under it's wing. Don't get in a bigger ship too fast such as a raven and have no cash left over and not great fitting skills. It goes onward and onward. Good luck, -Teh Shaz -------------------

Edited by: Drayco on 25/09/2005 00:30:25 YARRRRR!!!! It's the way to go. Skills do play a big part in damage and who you can take on head on but its not the only thing that matters. With a tactic and some luck of the draw you can turn a fight around into your favor quickly. Never let anyone tell you different. I highly recommend a cepter for you if you like the frigates... When you bring a b/s to its knees using one. Its almost as pleasuring as.... Well I won't go there.
I tip my hat to you Vladimir and have fun out there!

This is Vladimir posting on a spare alt slot, my own account has expired.
First of all, I'd like to say EvE is an excellent game of which I enjoyed only a small portion of, but unforunately, real life gets in the way. Besides, I'm here in the United States on a scholarship - I don't have much money to spend(I work to provide myself with food and a computer).
I would like to thank ach and every one of you for encouraging me.
My advice to others hellbent on 14 days of piracy.
Be brave, don't be afraid to take risks, your kestrel/other frigate is very cheap compared to what you can ransom a cruiser, mining barge, or even a battlecruiser for.
Learn to use the map - many functions are useful - I prefer the average players in space function, which greatly helps.
Be courteous and kind, I have never talked to my victims in any way other then kindly - even if the rare victim insults my mother, my reply would be something along the lines as "Sir(or madam), your vessel will be destroyed if you do not send me the isk demanded immediately, insulting my relatives will not prevent the destruction of your vessel). Besides, its good on the blood pressure.
Other advice for people, use cheap, disposable ships, and NPCs, I recently heard the story of someone inspired my tales who took down a cyclone in a executioner. She simply scrambled the person and repaired the damage, the NPCs did the killing. Excellent way of breaking someones tank.
Thank you to everyone who posted words of encouragement and support, and all those other pirates out there keeping people on their toes. Have fun - and oh, if I do return, fear me :)

Somehow, I do feel that NPCs do cheat a little, i.e. missile nerfs do not affect them that much when compared to PCs. Then again, I may be wrong. Also, the frigate is fitted for PvPing and the poor Caracal is fitted for NPCing. Not sure about whether the former argument holds or not.

If I told you my complete story and not just the fun parts - you'd probaly think I learned quite slow. I died many many times trying this - I lost a total of 20-30 Kestrels - most of them on my first day or so.
An NPCing Caracal was remarkably easy - He had 3 missile launchers and 2 railguns - His railguns kept missing me and I was able to tank the damage from his missiles fairly easily.
As for my sec status - I didn't really get it too low, I believe I ended up at around -2.5 near the end of my rampage. Most of it was due to the fact I podded that guy.

Edited by: Itar Cerius on 29/09/2005 02:25:50 Don't really know much about drones except shoot them, and also web them too for good measure.
I'd engage something with medium drones or light drones - but things that carry heavy drones normally kill you with the drones before you kill them in a kestrel. I personally don't know about the rifter - but it seems to be a faster, lighter kestrel. I'd presume killing drones is about as effective in both ships.

I agree with some of the comments that he did rather well on a 14 day trial - kudos for the "go get em" attitude, but dubious as to prior knowledge of Eve. A definate inspiration and thank you for the positive thread rather than all the detractors who normally post. I still suspect he was trialling an alt or had played before, but hey, still get the Kudos and i WILL be looking over my shoulder on my next mining session.

No begging, no scamming.
omg i love u

Great job. Definitely an inspiration to all new EVE players. Keep in mind though that you'll be cut of from entering certain empire systems quite quickly. However if you stick to only pirating in Friggies, it shouldn't take you long to train an alt to go fetch your ships and mods in empire It just goes to show, that PvP is all about the balls and learning by doing, not about watching your skilltree and thinking: " Oh when I hit 30 mill skillpoints I'll definitely blow up something"

Awesome, Vlad. I'm pretty new to the game too, but I never got that many kills in my first 2 weeks, congratiluations. I am currently trying every race's frigate to see what is the best for every possible pirating situation. The Kestrel is good, but past shields they're basically screwed. You were lucky because you had an armor rep and didn't get hit much, because you were fighting big ships (miners, cruisers, etc.) and that's the point of a frigate, to out manuever big ships, but if you went up against someone your own size, or just someone decked out with targetting modules, then you'll run into some trouble. I'm currently flying a Punisher for pirating, and it's going pretty well so far, i'd say it can take a bit more punishment (heh) than a Kestrel, and is still able to deal some good damage, and has quite a bit more speed than the Kestrel, but the Kestrel is a great powerhouse none-the-less. I'd love to do some pirating with you whenever you like, us frigate pilots/pirates have to stick together.
