As I am relatively new to PI (just set up my first 4 planets and actually have them running) I was curious to know peoples input on a few things:
1. Currently I am running 2xP1 products in order to produce P2 products on the same planet. I only have the capacity to run a total of 5 factories (4x P1 and 1xP2) hopefully more in the future. My question is, as my skills advance am I better off making only 1 P1 product per planet and the making a pure production planet? As I see it things are running very smoothly it will be easier to take P2 products from only 3 planets to a factory planet producing P3 (Currently I am training to run 10 planets using this method, so 9 planets producing t1&t2 products and then moving them to a factory planet to make the p3 & p4 products.
2. Looking at the cost/time values, am I better off just producing P1 products and selling them or is it worth the effort to produce the p4 final products?
Thanks in advance, if this has been answered before please link the post and I will as to have the thread removed (I just haven't been able to find any decent information on these questions.)
-Sin These may as well be farts in the wind but I have had a few beers since the start of this thread. |

Do math.
Higher levels (p3/p4) will require more hauling and probably more than one character. You should always refine to at least p1 on the planet.
If you like hauling then making mass p1 then exporting to factory to do p2/p3 is probably more profitable. If you want it to be more passive just make p2 on each planet and ignore p3/p4 completely.
If you get multiple characters, it becomes easier to run a factory planet 100%. With just 4 or 5 input planets, it can be hard to keep a factory planet stocked unless you haul every few days.
The reason you didnt find info is you asked what is profitable... which changes often. |

The P2 products needed for Fuel Blocks will always be needed, and are not as market volatile as a lot of the other PI products. There is much to be said in favour of modern journalism. By giving us the opinions of the uneducated, it keeps us in touch with the ignorance of the community.-á-á-á-á - Oscar Wilde |

-Sin you only need one of each P1 factory to feed a P2 Factory. P1 factories run a 30 minute cycle. Two cycles produces enough of that P1 to feed a single P2 factory. So each P1 factory will need 3000 units of P0 every 30 minutes, or 6000 units of P0 per hour. Ensure you have all extracted P0 routed to storage not directly to factories as any amount over the 3000 units will be lost. By storing it, the extra extracted at the beginning of the program will off set the shortages near the end of the program.
As far as only making P1 and exporting to a factory planet, many players do this. I actually do it for O2, the only P1 fuel block mat. It is more efficient but unless you are in low, null, or W-space with a low/no tax POCO you will need to keep a close eye on profits as the import/export taxes can hurt you.
Selling the PI directly will often give a higher isk/hr but you will have much much more hauling to do. Making P2 can be looked at like compression. P1 materials are 7 times the volume of P2 for the same amount of P0 that when into them. So basically what ever ship you use to haul goods to market one full load of P2 is equal in P0 mats to 7 Loads of P1. Even if the P2 slightly drops the value per P0, you value per load goes way up.
It all depends on how much logistics you want to deal with. Producing only P1 you will be hauling many more loads to market for the same income. Yet producing P3 or P4 you will be constantly moving goods around between your planets and paying import/export tax. But will probably only need to haul one load per week to market. Which one is better depends on how far you are from your selling market. a few jumps from Jita, sure make P1, But stuck deep in W-space with a high sec exit only coming around every few weeks, you are much better off making P3 and P4 stuff.
I have been doing PI non stop since it was introduced to the game. I have tried pretty much every possible configuration. For the last couple years or so I have ended up Making the products required for fuel blocks, and then making fuel blocks to sell. This has made me very good isk for the effort required. i only have to restart extractors each day, and haul once per week. The low effort required makes it almost passive income.
However in the last few weeks I have added making nanite paste to the mix. Since this is basically equal to a P4 but is made in station not on planets it was easy to convert a few planets over to start making the mats needed for nanite paste in addition to the fuel blocks. i make less fuel blocks, but nanite paste has a much higher isk.m3 value than fuel blocks. |
