and while i dont' really want to get drawn into the argument, like Windows/Microsoft or hate them, THEY'RE the reasons the current landscape of the computer world is like it is - Steve Job had a great idea that he mismanaged because he thinks small (and still does), and due to Windows managment and marketing, most of the world uses ONE operating system (for better or for worse)
i've been working with Linux since 95, i love it, but it's NOT a windows replacement (yet), it's too flaky, too tricky, and too techy.
hating MS is like hating Ford Motors - you don't have to like them, but you CAN'T deny how they revolutionised their industry.

i just wnat to know if there are any plans for a linux port
Vista is going to include SOOOOO many restrictive DRM features that it isnt going to ADD anything to the computing experiance...only remove it!!! i'll have to stick with XP until they finally drop it then i guess i'll be officially a penguin head!

Originally by: SengH ticoronderous the thing you have to realize is that linux has almost no chance of becomming mainstream. 99% of the computer users out there cant even deal with removing spyware from their own machine, let alone reinstalling an alternative OS or setting it up. Furthermore driver support for linux among its 20 different distros is a mess. Not saying that it isnt better than anything microsoft churns out, but the sheer market share that MS has gives it priority for almost every consumer level software/hardware manufacturer if they want to make a profit. Thus MS products will always exist in the near future, like it or not.
We have 30+ machines here at work running linux, and only 1 running windows xp. These are desktop machines btw. I don't know about you, but thats what I'd call mainstream. The tech guy was spending a few hours EACH day removing spyware, troubleshooting crap when we were windows 2k/xp. Now, well, I'm not sure if hes even alive since we never see him :)

that explains why they have over 95% market share
they have that much market share because it's the easiest OS to use. At a time (afaik) when OS where fiddly things that wern't as easy to use as todays products microsoft came up with the simplest to use layout. This encouraged users to start using computers more ebcause it was simple and easy. Until something comes out that is easier to get suport for, will run almost any game out there and is cheaper than windows it will always be dominant.
The current market trends though are showing that day of linux is coming. More usrs are becoming tech savy and more open to it. Personially I'm extremly happy with my copy of mandriva linux as it has nice hardware support, runs eve with a bit of tweaking and has never given me a problem, unlike windows....
Operator error. Maybe you just don't know how to run a computer?
95% of the world's computers are running Windows and most of them are fault free. I've personally got three computers running Windows XP at home and Win2K at work. I develop software. I write programs that crash, and attach hardware to my work machine that would make your eyes water. Windows takes it all in its stride.
Actually I suspect you are just exagerating. I've known several Penguin heads that claim Windows never works for them. I've been to most of their houses and you know what? It works just fine. They're just blowing smoke.
Bzzt. Wrong. 90ish % of DESKTOP computers run Windows. Apple has ~ 6% and the others combined ~ 4%.
Switch to embeded systems, routers, mainframes, servers, damn near all the workhorses of the world which VASTLY OUTNUMBER desktop systems and windows has less than a 5% share.
Qualify your numbers next time please.

ya, but how many people here can read JCL, talk to a VM/MVS mainframe? ever worked on an AS400? know what CA-7 is? know what a mainframe looks like? understand how WAN works ever mounted a tape, or better yet reel
most people don't qualify their numbers, because in their worlds they never 'see' the big(er) processors, so they don't exist |

How many people use a TV, use a reciever, a cellular phone, DVD player, an Ipod like device, a cable box, drive a CAR?
Its not jsut the bigger things, its alot of the little things. All these devices have operating systems that are not windows that present a user with an intuative interface to operate the device.

Originally by: kieron CCP is already working out a testing agreement with Microsoft to ensure that EVE will run on Vista properly. It is our hope that players migrating to Vista will have no problems with EVE on Vista right out of the gate.
Is that why I saw an Eve Advertisement on the DirectX page of Microsoft?? just a wise***** with no insult intended. I'm glad CCP is working with MS on this!
I started this thread because of my background and specialization of Microsoft products hoping others out there like me would post their findings, thoughts, etc on running Eve on Windows Vista.
So far I have had ZERO issues other than the fact that the lag is due to the lack of properly written video drivers. I hope to get a video driver written with the help of ATI soon. My coding abilities are not "great" so a little help/advise can go a long way.
In closing could the people who have nothing better to do than bash Microsoft, promote Linux, etc. kindly find another thread to hound. This thread was started with the purpose of it's title. Thanks a bunch!!

Wasn't bashing M$. Was just trying to set the facts straight. M$ maskes some grate products that I use every day (Game framework). They push the envelope on this and should be lauded for it.
Going to the new vector based graphics system (Ala Mac OS X's crystal) has strong advantages for gamers as it standardizes alot of the lower level calls thus promoting a more consistant product and response.

found the first issue today. logging into eve this morning i had 3 (1-inch wide) vertical bars a light green or brown in color. they were transparent to the background which did show through but they were easily seen. after i got to the charactor screen they went away.
still awaiting video drivers from ATI
anyone else have any success or failure with Vista yet??

It runs fine under Vista for me, although I have an nVidia card with their Vista drivers.

it is running fine (bit laggy) for me, but I don't have the updated drivers for my ATI card. Do you mind if I ask what model nvidia card you have?
only thing that has gone wrong for me so far was the vertical lines that disappeared at charactor login page.

I thought I'd add my results here :-
As a general rule yes I find it laggy, but once again I'm also running an x800 ATI card, so I do suspect the graphics drivers.
On another point however - I found security issues in relation to the fact I run my PC in an Active Directory domain with security policies applied. I had to make several changes to the policies to get it to run again.
I did contact Microsoft through my companies TAM, and got some interesting feedback over how the AD Policies are affecting the new Vista OS, so those of you that use EVE at work and are in an Active Directory Domain you may get some nasty shocks once you deploy Vista. Unless fo course your the domain admins ------------------------------------------------- Statement of the Obvious
Contrary to Popular belief - it is NOT possible to walk on water.

Hey all,
I tried many games on Vista and most of them tend to freeze up, even while i have supported drivers for nVidia. The problem starts when you try to install not-so-much-compatible drivers, like for instance sound drivers. Vista really isn't ready for games yet. I would restart this topic, once Vista Beta 2 kicks in.
