I've always wondered why Eve seems to be the only decent flying in space MMOPG. I've seen a couple of MMOPG.com, but they are either very amateurish or dogfighting games.
Anyone know of any other decent ones out there? Strange that Eve seems to have cornered the market.

Not sure about MMOs, but as for space games, Kerbal Space Program is epic fun. There you build rockets, planes, rovers, etc. and run your own Space Program. |

look on www.mmorpg.com
If there's any out there, it will most likely list them.
offhand though, most of what you will find will be a combination of WiP's, Lobby Games, Cash Shop Driven F2P, Twitch Based Gameplay and/or SP RTS with an online/LAN option ....
Choose 2+ from the above list. v.slim pickings really. |

Looks fun DuKackBoon. I'll give it a try. Reminds me of Orbiter right off the bat.

As far as flying in space, FTL is a great game. It's not an MMO though. But hey, who needs people to have fun.. |

Im going to recommend Star Conflict, even though it is a World of Tanks, Arcade-eque type game. (aka Dogfighting and the like) It is quite enjoyable. Also, you cant go wrong with Kerbal Space Program :D Arma Purgatorium - For the State, For the Corporation Faction Warfare, PvP, Industrial - Open for Recruiting http://armapurgatorium.files.wordpress.com/2012/11/arpur_recruit1.png-á |

Don't forget the X series of games, it's kind of like a singleplayer version of eve.
Oh and another recommendation of Kerbal Space Program, I would have said orbiter as well but it seems you have already found that wonderful space sim.

I have to say I don't recommend Star Conflict. At first the game was great, then they started patching into the wrong direction. Since 0.7.10(They have been in "beta" for over a year and seem quite good as using it as a scapegoat for when they make terrible patches) and since 0.8.0 they have basicly revamped the whole game.
But the worst is their support has the EVE additude, in 0.8.0 they basicly killed all of my progress(~250 hours spend for nothing) and all I get is a response from their support saying "we're in BETA, suck it up"... but then in many sentences but that is the summary of it.
But Kerbal Space Program is a lot of fun yes ^.^
And Sins of a Solar Empire(:Rebellion) is also a great space RTS. Endless Space isn't bad, but the combat is somewhat lacking on the fun part. ^they may not be real flying in space, but as long as spaceships explode, who cares! |

Although if you're starting from scratch Star Conflict is pretty fun. The only people who got screwed over from the last patch was the dudes with T3/T4 ships. It's the closest thing to balanced since the game entered closed beta. So now is as good as time as any to start playing. |

Fantasy scenarios have always dominated the world of MMO's just as from the late 70's onward, Fantasy literature has always cornered the market over Science Fiction.
The only place SF has dominated over Fantasy has been the cinema and TV, but that is changing with the success of Harry Potter films, LOTR/Hobbit, and Game of Thrones.

I try to keep track of Space MMO's here besides Star Confict mentioned already are those that I know.
Vendetta Online: Dog fighter with dated graphics and space planes. It is made by a small dedicated team helped by players. Subscription based with a small community.
Battlestar Galactica Online: Complete PvP Game with a surprisingly equal mix of Dog Fighting and EVE style Big Ship Command. Very fun design. The tragedy of this Bigpoint game is simply that it is only innovative in finding new ways to gouge its player base of every red cent. The grind is built to be excruciating and the P2W Store incredibly costly. Avoid if you don't have months to grind or deeeep pockets.
Black Prophecy: This F2P dog fighting game was touted for months on these forums and elsewhere that it would absolutely kill EVE and anyone left playing EVE when this gem came out would be an idiot. It's officially dead now. The company is working on a sequel that is described as an EVE clone by most.
STO: Can't say much about it, haven't tried it. They added Romulans as a faction and it is free now so that's pretty good I guess.
Moon Breakers: This exists and there is dog fighting.
Taikodom: Unreleased close beta. EVE like but a dog fighter. F2P
DarkSpace: Big Ships, small community, crappy graphics, tried it once, left before I learned it. Maybe you might enjoy it I dun know.
Stellar Impact: Literally LOL in Space.
Pirate Galaxy: Spaceship tanks or something.
Earth and Beyond: It still exists as an MMO Emulator, it is on a free server.
SWTOR: People tell me this is a space MMO, I tell them to go f*** themselves. Flying on rails do not count as a space MMO. It is an ground MMO with different planets. |

Kerbal Space Program is really a feat of engineering that gives you an immense amount of control over building rockets and flying them in a realistic Solar System that is sort of a shrunken version of the real thing. It's only shrunken to perhaps 1/10th of the size though, still incredibly huge.
Gotta try Homeworld if you haven't. I couldn't get past the learning curve (imagine that) so I don't know much about it beyond what you can find at a glance on Google. 3D full range of movement RTS in space.
Miner Wars is a minecraft-esque space game in which you fly a ship and tear apart asteroids and other space junk with your lasers--you can dig tunnels through asteroids, carve out complexes, collect the resources to build things, and even shoot other ships.
Descent is somewhat of a basic flight shooter but it has no up or down like most games, and much of the game takes place inside installations. You can easily get lost within the halls as your mind fails to recognize the same path when viewed from a different angle. Quite a mental exercise.
I vaguely recall some game called Lightspeed way back in the days of bare-bones graphics and low processing power. In this game, you had to monitor fuel and resources as you calculated lightspeed jumps to various destinations. The farther you jump, the more fuel it costs. There were random events, too, which could really throw you for a loop. I don't remember much about it but it seemed cool, and definitely not like today's space games.
As for MMOs, there may be just the one for your liking. A game called Infinity Universe is in development and likely far from release (especially since it is being made by just one person), but it features a realistic-scale galaxy with full-scale star systems and planets, all procedurally generated. The generator is being beefed up to produce cities and civilizations, and perhaps NPCs. The game will store only your changes to the universe, and if you fly far away from where anyone else is, then you will become completely isolated in a rich world nobody has ever seen before. The physics of space travel are realistic and you accelerate and decelerate to get around. I'm really excited to see more about it as it develops. Malcanis for CSM 8 |
