Okay so before I get to the main thing I just want to ask if anyone's tried the other languages on Eve? because AFAIK the only part of Eve that changes in language is the little message box saying "Some parts are not in this language yet, they will be in English".
But I want to get a general idea...how many people in Eve speak a different language as their first? 70% 80%? 50%? And what's the general distribution of first languages? It'd be great if I could practice my French on Eve instead of flipping flash cards... _____________________________________________ Assassin for hire. Low level, low prices. |

From practical experience (and ofc that's a survey sample size of one ), it's somewhat less than, but not much less than, half of EVE players whose first language is not English. Many of those speak English anyway, if their first language is not widely known; but there are plenty of French-speaking-only, or German-speaking-only, corps, and there definitely used to be some Russian ones, and probably still are.
Game seems popular in Denmark too .. probably generally in Scandinavia. And also Iceland, for bizarre and unfathomable reason ______________________________

Must be hard to be a child in Sweden, nobody understands a word your saying....
But apparently they can speak to the old people who cant speak their native language either...

Edited by: Rutefly on 05/09/2005 12:27:04 Edited by: Rutefly on 05/09/2005 12:24:47 My experience with games that run in different language versions is, people start to chat in their selected native language, and inter-communication becomes rare and split. Also noone knows what modules everyone else is speaking of. Alot of spam in languages you dont know in local etc.
I have been smack talked to in something that looked russian. And its pretty annoying.
It is VERY bad for the community as whole. But opens the game up for ppl only speaking their native language.
(And yes, im a danish )

He might have been complimenting you on your incredible fighting skills
But, yes, there's a reason why games tend to demand English in public chat channels (like Trade) and forums (like this one). Fragmenting the game is not a great idea. And, like it or lump it, English *is* the universal language. ______________________________

damn, why? it's so not-standard...grammar is so messed up in english. vowels do not have consistent sounds...any language could be better than english.

You will be pleased to know of the forthcoming language forums, of which I believe French is one.
Marie est en la salle de bains.
Pierre marche a la boulangerie.
Although personally I found practising languages fairly simple on something like ICQ if you ask nicely enough in getting people to help you.

British Empire 4tw. We conquered almost a third of the planet, and our daughter nation (even though she threw a paddy and disowned us ) becoming the #1 economic and military power in the world has kinda finished the job.
There are any number of simpler languages that would have been better served, but, too late now. English IS in universal use, and people are highly resistant to change. ______________________________

Yup English is the top dog for languages, its a shame we are too ignorant to adapt to other languages ourselves.
While in high school i "learnt" spanish, thing is i was real bad at it and didnt take it in properly, thus my main languages are whittled down to 2
1) English 2) Bad English
Funny tho, what with English being the dominant language, we chose to write a mathematical message on the side of Voyager, just in case intelligent life found it.

I think you have answered your own question. In English, you can say the words in almost any order and/or you can mispronounce vowels and still be understood.
Try that with a language with rules or, god forbid, a tonal language.
