So I'm bringing back this old thread from the old forums. Credit given where due to Akita T, shame she couldn't be here to start this thread herself. But here is a piece from the old thread:
START--
SO, WHAT IS THE "THOUSAND PAPERCUTS" PROJECT ?
It's an attempt to gather intel a lot of really small things that you put up with easily for some reason (usually because you got used to it after a while, short or long), but it still kind of bothers you to some tiny (or not so tiny) degree. Each and every one of those things might not even really be annoying in itself (and at least for some, changing them might probably NOT be really worth CCP's time yet, to be honest), but there might be so many that they end up giving you an overall feeling of discomfort, or stress, or whatever you'd like to call it.
WHAT DO I WANT FROM YOU ?
If you have one such minor inconvenience, whenever you encounter it, please describe it in here. THE SMALLER THE INCONVENIENCE, THE BETTER. You know, the small things... those you'd feel embarrassed to file a bug report for since they're so insignificant, or even never really bother to start a thread about it for fear of being laughed at for being too whiny about something most people don't even consider that much of an inconvenience. Things like: * "I wish the use/trash options on the menu would have more distance between them" * "I'd love if the timer for switching between ships was shorter than 30 seconds" * "I hate that nebula background images are so low resolution, I see nasty colorbands and blocks on my monitor at high resolutions" * "I don't like waiting 5-10 minutes for the remote asset list to reload" * "I'd like it if when I create a fleet I'd be made squad commander by default" * "I want more font options" * "It would be great if I could select a default showinfo tab" * "The blinking of the character sheet icon after claiming certificates annoys me, why do I have to open it again for it to stop blinking, I was just there" * "The "location" turret position on the "shipname" model annoys me because "reason"" * "Why do I have to stop training a skill when I clonejump, can't it pause and resume automatically?" ...and so on and so forth.
WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF THIS ?
Well, there are several.
First off, maybe that minor annoyance you always had has some way to be sidestepped that somebody else found but you weren't aware of (hey, weirder things have happened). If you think you have a solution to one of the issues presented, don't be shy, say it.
Second, some of those things might be trivial to fix/change, and merely the fact they're brought forth will trigger their fix/change. Yeah, a bit of too much wishful thinking, but you never know.
Finally, after enough of these minor annoyances are collected, hopefully the most commonly perceived as annoying ones that so far were deemed not worth the time will hopefully get some attention from CCP when they're brought up as individual items. However, they would have to be common to quite a few people before they even deserve to be elevated to that particular status.

When i shoot a -10 pod, i don't get a security status increase.
The only difference between him and the NPCs is, that he's no NPC.
I shoot stupid rats at plexes, belts and missions, being from a different faction than the current empire and free to shoot, also with negative security status, which is shown by clicking at the wrecks of the NPCs.
... but when i actually shoot a -10 pirate pod, all there is is a stupid killmail i don't care about.

This isnt a minor inconvience, its a major feature overhaul you're asking for we're specifically asking to get rid of about a quater million usd of software right there.

Something semi-related to above.
There are people in highsec with bounty on their heads, yet they aren't criminals and i'm not free to shoot them.
This really makes no sense! :)
There was this guy undocking at the station, undocking, having a too low faction standing, so the local police popped his ship.
There was enough time to check him, because i always check when the message appears. (criminal bla you will be punished bla)
He had 20 Million ISK on his head and when his pod appeared ... ... the next step simply was a logical consequence ... lock, point, shoot.
CONCORD comes and blows me away, while at the same time confirming the transaction of 20 Million ISK bounty to my wallet.
Simply makes no sense.
Oh and ...
I really hope he believed nobody would ever shoot him anyway, just because it's ******* highsec. :)

It really bothers me when i see my ship warp through stations and planets.
I also don't like it when I see large ships and capital ships moving around like they are balloons. Often ships appear to move as if they have no mass at all. Best example is when ships collide with objects. It makes me avoid it just so it doesn't look so stupid.
I don't like it when missile modules make the launching noise when they are deactivating due to loss of target.

Subject 1 was discussed recently, and I hope somone at ccp might have noticed it, making all planets and heavenly bodies of that mass act like a warp bubble. So that when your path goes into a planet you get yanked out of warp.
It would annoy some fleets but theyll get smart and bounce around.
Subject 2 was attemped before, not sure what it resolved to but it seems like a dropped idea, in that mass would account for bumping mechanics, an interceptor would not be able to shove off a battleship at all sort of deal, an avatar would plow though entire formations flinging them all out of the way. QA however spawned 30 titans on an anchored POS and made it fly out of system with the fix and since then shut that idea down. |

I tend to have a set of windows tat i believe is cruicial for me when I am in combat. These windows I feel take up unnecessary amount of space on the screen making it super hard to fit everything. I made a screenshot of what i mean:

The red boxes are "dead" space that Have little to no use to me but that I cant remove.
For example, if I'm not probing after people I have no use for the ystem scanner tab or the moon analysis tab on my directional scanner, yet they're there and take up space where locked targets should appear. The local chat is another window that ought to be smaller (horisontally), since during combat the chatbox section is of little to no interest. Also, the people and places window for quick access to safespots take up unneccecary amounts of space and if tweaked wouldn't block the dronewindow if it were to be placed to the lower right corner.
I guess my point is that there are alot of small dead space areas that could be tweaked to that the end result would be a better view overall.
Secondly. there should be separate shortcuts to open the starmap and to open the solarsystem map. For a prober it tedious to have to load between the two as you alternate between setting waypoints and view the layout of the system. |

Guy above me: try a bigger monitor or a larger resolution.
When i save a fit it doesn't save ammo... thus when im fitting suicide ships with 20 ammo in each gun i have to hold shift... drag ammo... type the amount in... for every gun. Instead of it auto putting ammo in like it does with all the mods when i load a fit. Even if it just saved ammo and put a full clip in each gun it would help a bit.
Or make a way to group up weapons in the fitting tab while docked... there might be a way to do this but idk how. There should also be an option to say yes fit rigs this time or auto fit every time with no warning... so i don't have to manually fit rigs on everything either.
There is no option for 6-9 jumps on the market for buy orders. It goes from 1,2,3,4,5,10. Did some really get that lazy and didnt want to program in 4 extra digits?
Not really a small thing but... invention requires 50 billion clicks to accomplish anything.
Please let us stack BPC's with the same me/pe.
I cant put packaged containers inside the station warehouses. So when i have everything organized, there sits X packaged GSC's in my inventory that i cant put anywhere. Anything packaged should be able to go into a container. |

Seriously, I shouldn't have to.
You don't have to make a hypothesis based on subtracting your minimum from maximum and then knocking off a few random km in order to get your optimal turret range.
It says it right there on your d@mn info and that's the actual range you'll get.
Why can't we have that with torps and other missiles? |

drone UI:
add common orders like launch/engage/come_back to the drone window. This shortens the mouse movement and does not require the context menu. (context menu is a UI anti-pattern for often used tasks!). The engage button does not make sense on the target info window if you think about it (there is no engage with guns).
overheat UI:
- buttons should be larger, a few pixel is not enough - remove the button if the skill is not trained, noobs use the mouse more often than vets and its more likely that they hit it ending up confused since the weapon does not react etc
bug #117147 please, this looks like it could be easy to fix
50 fittings:

I can copy bookmarks to a secure can that I own (aka: I was the last person to jettison it) from my People & Places folder directly to the can, but anybody else (who I have highest standing set to) must first copy bookmarks to cargo and then move from cargo to the can. This extra step is unnecessary.
Why isn't there a confirmation box for deleting bookmarks? I tried to edit a BM today, missed the edit button (which is just one option above "remove bookmark") and deleted it without confirmation! D'oh.
There is a map overlay that uses the Remote Sensing skill to show a player, in light-years, how far they can manage their colonies with Planetary Interaction. Why is there no map overlay that shows how far, in light-years, my current jumpdrive-equipped ship can jump?
If I join a fleet with random players who I do not have standing set to (like an Incursion fleet), there is no way to set up the overview so that I can see my members in fleet without also showing players I have neutral standing to. This fills my "fleet only" overview with a bunch of people who aren't in my fleet...useless! The "show fleet members" option should show fleet members regardless of your standing towards them if everything else is unchecked. |

- instead aurora saying "you can not do X while you are cloaked" it should instead decloak the ship and do X.
- fix t3 fittings window, ship does not update its model, CQ model is updated properly however.
- t3 ship icon should show the actual look of the t3 with its subsystems instead of a generic t3
- find a better way to switch weapon ammunition. e.g add another small button to each gun, something like the overheat button (again: context menu is evil, try to replace all common tasks with UI)
- add range/falloff/tracking, speed/flighttime info to the turret/launchers -> mouseover maybe. Thats the most common reason why you open the weapon info in fight. With chatboxes you got your local,corp,alliance,intel,and friends channels and when you have them all pinned together your not always sure which box your typing in.The chatbox your in should be highlighted in a way that you should know exactly what chatbox your in and you dont type in the wrong one. |

Blob columns.
When you put your cursor over a blob of ships is becomes a column, however, targets below, above, or beside the blob, but still close, won't be in the colum and sometimes get a bit in the way.
So expand the width of which the column is determined off of to get all those targets in the column.
Just makes life a little easier that way. |

While I have some good friends -10 and roam with often it's all clear for me that in high sec a red who is not blued (standings) = kaboum him or me but kaboum !
Just has you said, makes no sense Concord shoots us by doing so. (still, arty trasher is cheap and fine for this)
Edit: stuff getting me nervous?
1-The FRACKING excell windows all over my screen wasting the graphic awesomness of this game !! CCP do it NAO !!
2-Not being able to learn some stupid skill (another one) and after this being able to set coordinates x-y-z -> warp to !!!
3-Insta lock - min locking time required sould not go under 2.5sec no matter how many links/upgrades you put on your dam thing
4- Mining barges/exhumers: mining is already tedious and the crapyest thing to do in the game, make at least those ships align/warp faster, give them more tank and slots +pg/cpu, make them funny to use !!
5- Drones...do I really need to say some more stuff about drones? -I don't think so.
6-logistic ships that can't be cap stable without...logistics or downgrade fitting! -that should make sens for everyone and his granma when you take a close look to the skills required (all related to 5 not less), and should not need fitting implants...
7- FORUM: tbh you loose all will to live with this timer making your posts disapear, you need to "copy" and eventually "pasta" at each reset....nice stuff ! |

My paper cut change would be.
In a recent patch (as part of the paper cuts stuff i believe) it was changed so that when you stack items they are automatically sorted again afterwards. This sounds fine, and is in most cases, however i would like another option to stack without sort.
My reason, there may be others. I used to have a container with 1 of every meta level 4 item in it. So every so often i would put all my loot into the can and stack. This sorted the wheat from the chaff in a very quick way. As everything past the last item that started in tha can was put for reprocessing.
There is however another way to fix this, put a 1,2,3, or 4 on the front of items like tech 2 and faction have that denote their meta level. Having to go through checking the show info all the items im not sure about is VERY tiresome.

OH, an actual timer on mining lasers that displayes their actual "seconds" duration so that it's easier to figure when to turn them off instead of just guessing based on where the meter bar is at. |

Seriously, i love EVE, everything it is, but after two and a half years here and constant training, i'd like a rather substantial of E-Peen to my screengasm, then presented with the pecker shaped and sized chimera.

Agreed. Come to think of it, there are a lot of strange sized ships.
Why is the Machariel so huge? Why is the Chimera so small? Why is the Hyperion so huge? Why is the Primae/Noctis the size of a battleship, especially when the windows and structure looks like it should be a lot smaller

Forming up random incursioneers is enough pain without having to go through the corp interface to check each of their corps for wars, by searching for each corp by name... |

killrights and teh overview:
i wanna be able to SEE the people i have killrights on WHEN they are there, not 40 minutes later when i go "arh Thats where i remember him from"
teh way ive solved it so far is assigning killrights bad ( orange standing ) and then checking em on occation -killlrights expire but standings does not, and they coenside with the corp standings also which means i still> have to check if i havekillrigths on em b4 i engage.. obviously leaving my target running aways screaming long b4 i dare hitting my scramblers, also because the doods practically invisible to me, but i flash up like rudolph... you get the point..
It is.. *******> annoying and a fix would be nice.

Please fix it so that if a pos lab/array is set to alliance use, there is a feasible way for the alliance to use the facilities. At the moment it is still limited to the pos owning corp. |

Command centers for PI are a necessary annoyance. The storage is too small, and the fact they can't connect to customs reduces them to a necessary evil.
Combining the storage and functionality of a launch pad with the command center would help, and making the command center mobile on top of that would be ideal.
Imagine being able to move your command center to new hotspot areas and having it actually worth connecting to your PI network, eliminating the need for separate launchpads? Six months in the hole... it changes a man. |

it uses far to much space to be usefull in fight and the notification box was fun fallout 1 but doesn't work for eve that well.
your shiny ship was wreckingly hit by 19 large firghtening modulated energy beams comming from Lord Commander Admiral Ludicus III inflicting almost 5 damage on your fast recharging shields.
all you wanted to know was the 5hp damage part...
something like (table): hit | 5 damage | descriptive message ewar | jamming | descriptive message

improve notifications: one single notification box. common. This does not make any sense.
we need a rolling list, something like a minimal logviewer. Example: 3-5 lines (configurable) showing the latest events. Old entries fade out.

Some of these I've mentioned before, but i'm copying from my thread so that XXSketchxx doesn't cry more.
So...
1) Sell multiple items at once - or at least give us back the hitting enter to sell an item.
2) Give us the option to show an actual cycle time displayed in numbers that will sit over the top of the icon. This works great for those like me who are precise in their mining.
3) Show missile max flight range with acceleration time already factored in.
4) Players can make and label tabs in their hanger and items, exactly like corp tabs. This is for organization without having to use containers to do so.
5) Fix the evemail... While it's functional and works good, it's a little dis-organized and a bit hard to sort things out at times.
6) Allow skills to be injected even if you can't train it yet. Just cause you can't train the skill, doesn't mean you can't memorize the book.
7) Allow skills to be que'd that rely on a skill currently being trained. I.E. if i'm training gallente indy lvl 5 and there are less than 24hrs remaining, allow me to que transport ships. if i remove gallente indy from training, then it also removes transports from que.
8) Allow linking items and locations from their info window by dragging and dropping.
9) Bring back the full sounds of mining.
10) Allow thrusters, turret and missile effects, as well as other visual effects to be seen even when you're zoomed out, unless you're zoomed out so far that you cant' even see the ship.
11) allow audio effects to also be heard even when zoomed out, unless you're zoomed out of visual range.
12) Allow items to be sorted in the market based on size and slots. In other words, i want to only see large items, or I only want to see high slot items.

Mining Drone Hot keys
Simple way to do it.
Drop Mine from drone options, cause no one tells their drones to only mine one cycle.
Mine repeatedly uses the same hotkey that you set for your combat drones to engage a target.

All is well and fine as your old frigates and random ships are deploed into the container, but, as you attempt to load the fully fit drake into the bowels of ur newborn baby, the "*BEEP* - Assembled ships wont fit into the cargohold, try repacking em first" text o' hell appears on ur screen.
"ARGHWUTDEHEK!!" you yell in frustration - "Repacking em? wutareyouONABOUT??? Wut about my RIGGS????" You roar, as the perspective of hours and hours of hammering turning into a very nice set of ex bits and bytes, all spending their eternity on a harddrive, for just about a second, b4 being overwritten, and in any case leaving you depressingly riggless, dawns on you.
As you Aim ur photonic nerve tranquilizer AKA BFG4000 at CCP official you manage to pry the words "Lemmetransportmyriggswithoutrepackingem.." between ur grinding and powdered teeth.

Yes, yes, a thousand times yes. This annoys me to no end, there's no reason for us to have to manually start and stop training when you just need a couple method calls and a local variable to do it (since every single time people just resume training anyways). |

Here's one: put in an option to unfit just the high slots, or low slots, or mid slots. (High slots especially.) So annoying when I have 8 guns full of ammo and need to change gun types, and have to remove the ammo, THEN remove the gun, all individually. (Or, if they're in groups, make the entire group unfit, instead of ungrouping them when you remove one.) |

It is nice with the "Recommended" tab in the Ship Info window, to show the good-to-have skills associated with a certain ship.
Even nicer would be to see the status of each certificate in this tab, ie green tick = claimed, yellow circle = some criteria satisfied, red cross = no qualification.
As of know I have to look up each certificate in the Certification Planner, instead of telling at a glance if I should get in that shiny Ishtar or not. |
