I'm new, I'm on a trial account. I love the game; I'm having a great time.
But $20 a month? That is absolutely absurd. I can't believe how many people are willing to pay that much to play a game. Game developers should be ashamed of themselves for charging so much.

Odd, I'm paying $14.95 a month. Also, tens of thousands of us pay every month, and it's totally worth it to us.

It's $19.95 for the first month, then $14.95 for each month after that. The different billing intervals give you:
12 months @ 10.95/month 6 months @ 11.95/month 3 months @ 12.95/month 1 month @ 14.95/month
And you should think yourself lucky. We europeans have to pay in Euros which costs us 22.4% more than those paying in dollars.

Fair call. I guess that's just it, if you're having fun then it's worth spending the money. Guess I should just try it for at least a month.

I've just never paid to play a game once I've already paid to own it. Granted, this is different since the client is free, but I wouldn't mind paying $50 to get the game and then not have any subscription fees after that. I played Neverwinter Nights online for a few years and that didn't cost me jack, and that was great fun. Why can't games keep going in that direction?

Because like it or not, games like EVE take a lot of infrastructure and support to keep running.
Look at it this way, the cost of EVE each month is comparable to buying a new game every two months or so. If you enjoy playing it, surely that's worth it?

EVE runs on a server cluster that needs to be maintained.
The devs are continuously working to fix bugs and add new content.
Support is free.
You are paying a monthly fee for these reasons.
I have never played Neverwinter Nights but I don't see how they can continue to pay a development team to improve the game etc. with only one-off fees.
They certainly can't plan future content because they have to rely on new people signing up. They basically have little idea what their future income stream will be like.

Short answer is: YES 8)
I see work of developers and I support is really awesome so I dont thiks I`m paying too much for this level of service.
Personally I think that subscription fee is more fair that one time payment.

its not $20 a month, its $20 dollers for the game and the first month. think of it as buying the game for 5 bucks and paying $15 a month.

Yea, the devs are constantly trying to implement new bugs that will screw up the network and keep the server/nework techs busy 8)
Consider the fact that CCP are not the biggest game corp around (but getting there hopefully) and dont need that many economy dudes that sit on their flat behinds and plots for career advancement yet. It is still a market controlled thing, and EVE was/is prolly kept at average market pricing to keep up with the competition. Ask some WOW players (that are not insane if possible) how much dev interaction and costumers service they get for their bucks worth ? Alot less.
Also, EVE has more soul. Blizzard used to have that in the old days.

They don't. NWN isn't an MMORPG (although some mods have tried to turn it into that), and Bioware (the devs) don't host any servers. It's all down the players and people like Gamespy.
Money is still being put into the game as 1) it's still selling rather well and has a massive user base, 2) The 2 expansion packs have sold very well too, 3) A new "premium mod" store had been setup which users can pay to download "professional mods", i.e. mods worked on by the community with Bioware. The mod-maker gets some of the money too. The new content patches are just fixes, a few new spells (Impode coming soon, wahoo!), and maybe a few extra tools.
Now, if we can steer this post back on topic...

The short answer: YES
The long answer: Hell Yes
I have been playing for a good long while now. I live in Denamrk, and therefor i have to pay in euros which is more expensive then dollars in the end, something about VAT i think.
Anyways, i dont mind it at all. I started out runing with one account, now i have two. And even when i have to pay for two accounts and paying the extra cash for it i think its well worth it.
So basicly YES, YES and YES.

I've reduced my costs by buying on the 6-month installments. Helps, especially when one has more than one account.

Well, when Eve behaves like it has this afternoon, I too wonder why I pay for 2 accounts.
I've been unable to stay connected for more than 5 minutes since DT.

I've had nothing but ISP problems the last 2 weeks so you're probably right.
My 2Mbps Nildram has been severely ****** by a broken BT exchange. I'm getting 256kbps speeds, if I'm lucky.
Won't be fixed until June 30th.

It's just an old perception.
We have been buying games out the box for years and thats it.. job done.
Tbh, after taking the plunge and signing up for a monthly, i have to say there's no greater value in just about anything realy.
Non of this pay as you go crap or anything else... on tap 24hrs a day, 7 a week.
It's like wrangler said, 5-10 quid a day if you smoke, 30 quid min if you clear off down the pub for the night...
Eve 10 quid a month... nuff said realy.

'This much'? I think MMORPGS are the absolutely cheapest form of entertainment you can buy, at least where I live, and definitely worth it. I seriously can't think of any form of entertainment that's even close to this cheap. One movie is $12.50, and that only lasts 1 1/2 hours.

It is absolutely worth it to have a 'perfect' universe. By that I mean no cheaters.
It is simply not possible to cheat or hack by the way the game is built. So you pay for that service. Even the fighting between the ships is done in a way so that no aim-bots or see-thru patch is going to give you any unfair advantage over another player.
Some people are ready to pay a lot to have power over the others and so we pay that little to be free of them, while having fun playing, knowing that nice modules on an opponent ship have had someone work hard for and he is not printing them with some cheat code or exe hack.
I have seen an anonymous guy that was running a dedicated game server (don't remember which game but it was a FPS) on the internet say litteraly: "If they log on MY server, they are under MY control. I can handicap them, transform them into another shape, remove all their weapons. If they talk this or that way, I will make them leave the server."
What's the point of playing if you compare to people that are in God mode? Curiosity, maybe. But you won't play long, even if you are the one in God mode...
Here's an hypothetical transmission... Eve Server: ok there, you have one new ship at the gate and he is targetting your ship. Eve Client: ok, I lock that ship. Eve Server: lock completed, he is 20km from you. Eve Client: I activate my 9th high slot containing a tachyon laser 1 Eve Server: nice, let me see... Eve Server: Notification, you are banned for life, have a nice day. |

i consider it well worth it considering the fairly frequent content that is added without paying extra for it i pay for three accounts as me and my girlfriend play with each other and one we share for hauling also i am suprised you paid for the game as when i started you could download the game for free complete with trial time from gamespy though that may have changed. |

I've only had one Crash today, and that was because my Cable modem refuses to work when its hotter then 31.8Ŧ - turning it off for 10 minutes and putting a fan on it resolved that problem.
