Its cool to watch their replies as they play more and slowly get addicted.

Best comment in the entire thread:
The soundtrack is top notch too. It's just synth, but it really makes you feel like a lonely-as-**** space miner.
Thats so spot on, thought I wouldnt call the music "just synth" myself.

Edited by: Omber Zombie on 31/05/2005 07:34:26 i read that entire thread and laughed through a lot of it, maybe CCP could sanction specialized nub corps (like eve-uni) and have as an option at the end of tutorials a sign-up for them... ----------- "Remember people: Omber is the biggest evil ever created, DO NOT let it get to you!" Hehe, when I was reading that thread I kept wondering why they were mentioning PA. It took me a while to realize it was Penny Arcade and not Phoenix Alliance.

have my key for the 2 week trial. What server etc are you guys on?

I totally want to be a space pirate. I tried the whole mining scene, **** that. Being a pirate seems a LOT more exciting. "100k isk or die, biatch"
you know, maybe some of those guys would be more positive towards the game if someone told them EVE is not sharded...And that rookie pirates trying to ransom people usually find themselves at the business end of either a combat miner, or Concord. Still, it is amusing to read :)

I was laughing as I read through the thread, since it seems clear that most of the people that didn't like the game were instant gratification kids or people that don't understand that EVE is about creating your own game, rather than having everything handed to you in a silver platter. They also don't seem to realise that even newbies can take part in battles, if only as a tackling ship. ------

...I don't get it, you suggesting that CCP stroll over there and set the forum mods on them for critically talking about Eve?

And there are some issues even us fanbois are not comfortable talking about...
Quote: I found myself while playing, just sitting around waiting for skills to level up. It came to the point where I wasn't even playing unless it was logging in to start training a skill because I wasn't able to compete with veteran players in PvP, or fight rats in dangerous zones, or do anything in the high level game, and there was nothing I could do but wait. I had money to buy a battleship, I had the skills bought and sitting in my hanger ready to be trained, but I just had to wait and wait and wait. I thought games were ment to be played?
I've always thought that this is and will always be one of Eve's major Achilles, it's a show stopper for n00bs and ball & chain for vets.

I'd say its the same thing in most mmog's. You dont see the noob orc go toe-to-toe with a veteran lvl 50 something dwarf, you dont see the same noob orc grind lvl40 ogres in the Swamp-o-death either.
In eve you wait for your skills to train, in WoW you grind NPC's to gain lvl's. These systems has their good and bad sides. The eve training system means that you can lvl while not playing but you dont really work for it either.
WoW system means that you work hard to lvl but you cant do it offline, and only lvl'ing while grinding means that ppl give pvp less thought. Dont know if there is any mmog that gives you skillpoints for killing other players.
So imo, EvE's skill systems works better for pvp than WoW's does. If your not chopping fairys 24/7 you dont get better.

Yeah, I see your point, but it wouldn't take a great leap of programming imagination/skill to address it, would it? [And I'm not referring to Eve specifically, but MMO development generally]. It's all papers, scissors & rocks imo. As you say, some MMO's force you to play 24/7 to become the best rock thrower, Eve lets you attain best paper wrapper buy squeezing you through time sinks, both have their drawbacks. Is it possible to find a holy grail balance?

Edited by: Kade Shaderow on 01/06/2005 06:44:07 EVE Online's skill training system actually allows for its players to have a life, something most people who enjoy Penny Arcade to the extent they habitually post in its forums don't possess.
But seriously, I like EVE because I don't have to treat it like a second frickin' job. World of Warcraft, FFXI, Everquest, etc., all punish you for not being constantly hooked in. "Ever*****" didn't get its notoriety from having the better gameplay than anybody else, it got that notoriety from requiring you to be logged in and grinding for a god-awful long time to stay with the pack. Disappearing on a vacation for a week meant the equivalent of retention in a junior high school.

There in lies the advantage of the 24/7 system, it allows a n00b to catch up. It's not perfect but, it has merits which shouldn't be glossed over. I don't understand why vets are so poor at acknowledging this, they were n00bs once.

With regards to the level'ing discussion...
There are tons of MMORPG's out there. Eve is currently the only one that you can take a break from and still continue to stay in the game at a decent level.
Of course, this is a duel edged blade with many new players seeing the vets many levels ahead of them and they have no chance to catch up without purchasing new accounts.
HOWEVER, the beauty about eve is that I can take 5 inty's out and 5 characters with 3 million sp each (which you can reach in no time at all after spending around that much time just learning the game) and I can kill an individual BS or I can go into a bunch of BS, kill a couple of their support ships then bug out.
Eve is a real team game and although the vets have more sp and more cash, the best players are those who play together in the proper multiplayer sense of the game.
It's good to read that thread and see there are still people being introduced to eve and it's especially good to see that the feedback is positive. Eve will never be mass market but I firmly believe it has staying power due to the offline level'ing up and the pure scale of the game.
DB Preacher currently on a break ;)
