Haha I have to admit, I laughed out loud at some posts in this thread. Thank you, General Discussion forums. You have changed my perception of having a bounty on my head. I embrace it now.

He then, along with his friends, proceeded to continue to increase the bounty on me until it reached 73,000,000ISK. Is this common? What's the purpose? Am I safe in High- Sec space?
Well.... 73m * 5 == 365m.... If you are flying a 365m isk ship (or more) and it can be ganked by a ship(s) worth 73m or less (like a talos or 7 t2 fit catalists or ....) then someone might, some day, gank your blingy ship for profit... but you're not really in that much more danger....

So I ignore the jerk, move on about my business, only to find out later that he or she has put the minimum bounty on me. Now I still feel relatively safe, but I have lost a level of anonymity, which is also a survival tactic. I know we are in the sandbox, so it's all in the game, but there should be some kind of downside to the random bounty placer -- perhaps they have to escrow 10x or 100x the bounty, or the bounty should have a time limit after which the bounty placer loses the his escrow and has to reset the bounty and escrow.
So questions, what can I do to mitigate or eliminate the bounty? What can I do to make the jerk wish he/she had never been born? The downside is that the system tells you who placed the bounty. The only way to get rid of it is to explode. If you want Retribution (pun intended) put one on him too. If the bounty was placed by an anonymity corp, then ask them what it would take to find out who placed it. If they still refuse, just put a bounty on their corp. Or, like me, you could just move on and get over it, because the bounty system is only rewarding under certain circumstances, and if you have a high sec status in high security space, and do nothing criminal, then your bounty is going to be hard to profit from. That's not to say someone might not try. Even if you didn't have a bounty.
Didn't really answer his questions but I'm curious about how having a high security status while in high security space and not do any criminal activity would make the bounty hard to profit from?
For example, a player with +5.85 security status in a +0.5 high security system minding their own business with a 100 mill bounty.

For example, a player with +5.85 security status in a +0.5 high security system minding their own business with a 100 mill bounty. DMC I think he was trying to say that if you don't shoot illegal targets (generating a kill right) or do things that grant a suspect status, then that would force a suicide gank situation to take your bounty if you stay in High Sec. But if you go into low or null, get suspect flagged often or gain outlaw status it is more likely someone will take a shot as there would be no Concord interference to cut down on the profitability of attacking you.
He just over generalized I think. To carve a successful niche for yourself in EVE you need to be able to out sell, out produce, out fight,-á out run, or out wit your competitors. If you can do none of the above, your only option is to complain on the forums that somehow you are at a disadvantage using the exact same tool set-áas the rest of the player base. |

Assuming they aren't suicide ganking just for fun, which they would be doing in any case bounty or not, the bounty merely factors in on their calculations if they could make a sufficient profit. It's fairly moot because quite likely whatever it is you are carrying, or fitting will determine that calculation in the first place. In other words don't jam your hold full of PLEX then complain that having a 100 mil bounty on your head made the gank happen. |

One thing to remember, the bounty system is in fact a player driven mechanic. As such NPC security ratings have no relevance to who gets a wanted sign.

But what's the point when everyone has the same sign on their portrait now? Everyone and their uncle is now a "badass" in EVE by that standard. There's nothing unique about it anymore, it means virtually nothing now. |

How, exactly, was I doing it wrong? I didn't have enough standing for anything higher than Level 3's. And if you're referring to running missions in general, get off my ****. I was familiarizing myself with the UI before doing anything of value. Trolls aren't welcome here. |
