People who are upset that CCP is killing dust by making int console don't undersrtand what's going on.
The console part was conceived well before the fps part. Its a way of expanding the even universe to the console.

OK I get that. CCP wants to expand to a different gaming hardware system.
But whats left is to explain why Dust PS3 exclusive, and not available on both. That way they would get customers who have a console and want to play on a console and those who want to play on a PC. http://vincentoneve.wordpress.com/ |

Actually they did explain why it's PS3 exclusive. The answer is simply, CCP doesn't want to be stuck with Microsoft's rules. I don't remember all the details but essentially Microsoft wanted control of the server, and didn't want to have a free download and free updates. Someone else may be able to explain it better but that's the basics. |

It's understandable why they want to avoid M$oft. God knows, I get it.
But Sony is not much better, and has a pretty shaky track record. With hacking and downtime and all the other issues the console faced recently, it didn't buy them much good will. They still have problems with certain things - like Skyrim DLC, none of which came out for PS3 yet, while XBoxers have 3, and PC users have 2. It doesn't help. And with PS4 on the way? Where's the wisdom of releasing a title for PS3, when PS4 developer kits are already being handed our, or very soon will be? |

Because all of the millions of PS3's will not suddenly self-destruct when the PS4/Orbis is released...and FOR THE LAST TIME I SAY THIS AS AN ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLE: you can still purchase a brand new PlayStation 2 FROM SONY.
So, if you want a PS2, here is the link: click me
Another thing to bear in mind, in case your logic is from a development perspective, the UDK engine can be compiled to any platform by clicking one button. Seriously, no joke: you click one button and it'll compile.
This is why developers GÖÑ using it, other than the licencing model, physics model, lighting engine, particle system, matinee etc etc etc.

Final Fantasy did it years ago. same game world whether you had a PS2 or PC version of the game. Even different languages were together. The fact remains, CCP does not want dust on the PC
They already have a PC game, EVE. They want to expand the EVE player base to the console. DUST is the way to do that. Simple, straight forward answer.

Vincent Athena wrote:What I do not understand is why is it not on PCs.
The answer to this question is multifaceted.
The first and possibly the simplest answer is that "cross-platform shooters don't work." A mouse and keyboard setup is functionally superior in precision and responsiveness to a console controller. This isn't a PC Master Race thing, this is an established and demonstrable fact. Almost every time this has been put to the test, players using a keyboard and mouse have dominated players using a controller. There's really no way to compensate for this other than artificially gimping the game's responses to a PC player's inputs, which feels like a punishment for superior hardware and rarely works correctly anyway.
This will create a two-tier system, whereby, given roughly equal circumstances, the mercenaries that play PC will almost always win, whereas the mercenaries that play the PS3 will almost always lose. Now, I am aware that there exists support on the PS3 for using a mouse and keyboard setup (and presumably, on a notional PC release, there'd be the option to use a controller), but this simply shifts the division from "PC vs. PS3" to "M&K vs. Controller," and given that the majority of PS3 users will still be using controllers and the majority of PC users will still be using mouse and keyboard, this distinction is largely academic.
The second answer is "because they'd be competing with Planetside 2." Planetside 2 was buggier on release than Dust is while still in beta but it's an established product with strong brand recognition that's already up and running, with a large fanbase. It'd be hard to compete with on PC, but it has no PS3 release.
The third answer is "because they'd be competing for the time of their own consumers." They already run a PC MMO, and if players migrate from one to the other - especially from EVE (a subscription based game with a guaranteed income per player) to Dust 514 (a free-to-play game with only the potential of income per player) - they're essentially in competition with themselves. It's the same reason that World of Starcraft isn't a thing. Mane 614

Your first answer is obsolete, because DUST supports mouse and keyboard on PS3. As soon as anyone serious about DUST learns this they will be using M&K and dominating the controller users. Just wait and see.
The second answer... oh boy. On PS3 they aren't obviously competing with any other games, eh?
Third answer, maybe. But I bet there are quite a lot of PC players who don't play EVE (anymore). All in all the potential gain should still be bigger than the potential loss, but maybe CCP thinks otherwise. I guess we will find in 2013 if they announce a PC port or not. |

The thing with mouse and keyboard support for consoles is that it sucks, sadly, because after all mouse and keyboard only emulates the pad which has it's limitations. I found this out when I wanted to try out Halo series after having fun on the initial Halo CE release ages ago on PC, managed to try it out with friends console with mouse & keyboard setup, but it was so damn sticky, slow and unprecise feel that there is no way I'd enjoy playing it.
Hence PC only for me.

Has it ever occurred to anyone that Planetside 2 is developed by Sony? Its also a MMOFPS, that just happens to be free to play, that just also happens to come out about the same time as DUST.
My theory is that in order for DUST to come out on the playstation they had to sign some kind of deal, where they were not allowed to release it to PC, for a certain amount of time. I have no idea if Planetside has any kind of intentions of porting to the Playstation though. CCP might have had some kind of clause in their contract too where they arnt allowed to say they are bringing it to PC.
Its just a theoryGǪ but I do think Planetside 2 being developed by Sony is the only reason why DUST isnGÇÖt on the PC.

I just got a PS3 white bundle yesterday, installed Dust this morning, and discovered the mouse and keyboard settings... I am definintely going to try this. depending on the mouse responsiveness, i'm going to murder.

This is not the case with Dust 514. I can confirm that the game has full kb/m support and not gamepad emulation and it works quite well. The only issue is the lack of key remapping but that is in the works. |

Not sure if you guys been paying attention but planet-side 2 is sinking faster than Starwars old republic did. Hell Planetside 1 has begun to pull ahead lately.
Anyways the real answer is money.
Sony paid ccp to be exclusive, and extended it just recently to be a launch title for the ps4.

This is not the case for DUST, I use a mouse KB for DUST and it's exactly the same as a PC game. They programmed this of course. People who grew up with a controller are as good with them as PC gamers are with a mouse/KB. Now average joe will probably beat average jane with a mouse/KB but there is no complaining from the vet controller players. |

Console exclusives are exclusives because developers are paid to keep them exclusive.
There is no mystery to this question.
Developers are in business, meaning they are there to make money. They do not care about this console is better then that console. They are interested in maximizing profit.
They release an exclusive because they believe they can maximize profit through a combination of lower development costs and a paid incentive to release on only one system.
The good news for EVE players is that console exclusives tend to only last one year for third party developers.
So a year after dust gets its official retail release look for the PC release to come out.
Quite frankly any argument that they didn't release on PC because they already have a PC game makes absolutely no sense upon examination. Plenty of game developers make multiple games for the same platform, in fact it is fair to say almost all of them do. |
