I look at the news on the right side of where I login. Most of it is just a made up story that has no effect on my gameplay.
I wonder why there isn't news about the 'real' things happening in the game - big battles, corps wining (and losing) war declarations, new BPOs released for never-before-seen items now on the market, etc.
This past weekend has seen a collapse in the Xetic Alliance, from the biggest in the game to half of its former numbers. Isn't that (and the reason behind it) newsworthy? |

those aren't really "made up" stories, they are carefully cultivated events for real eve players.

We used to be able to self publish, but it was abused along the lines of spam cans.
What we should have instead is allow the alliances the perk of publishing news items in a webspace connected with the main news. Having a central newspaper is critical to nationalizing forces.
Ads by players should be possible, but they should use a template with a limited number of words to prevent abuse. I played on a friends FFXI account once and they had a cruddy sort of system for translating words into crude Japanese or to English. If you've seen that, then you know what I'm talking about. Ads would be restricted to a line or two, and would only be able to demonstrate simple phrases such as events or sales.
Bartering is more entertaining than using the market. And potentially more profitable.

CCP could take advantage of some of the statistics that they get -- not to supply reasons, but just to point out some abnormal facts.
- They would know, for example, if a system has had 250 ships in it simultaneously, followed by 100 pod kills in the next hour.
- They would know, if an alliance or corporation has lost over half of it's membership in the past 3 days.
- They would know, if a normally quiet backwater system has had over 3000 jumps (ship transits) in an hour.
- They would know, if conquerable stations change hands.
- They would know, when they release new BPOs to the research agents.
- They would know, if there's one system in which most of the battleships are manufactured.
- They would know, if there's one region that leads by far in commerence/market transactions.
Any of these or similar statistics could become the basis of a news teaser or more 'real' news article. |

I'm suggesting if there was more news about player-generated events (intentional or not), then there might be more player interest in the news.
