There is no finer spectacle in the universe of EVE Online than the explosive dance of weapon-laden spaceships in combat. The yearly Alliance Tournament is the jewel in EVE Online's eSports crown and the upcoming New Eden Open should deliver the same gladiatorial entertainment showcase.
Given the scope of the sandbox, what part should eSports play in EVE Online and what other formats could provide internet spaceship entertainment for spectators and participants alike? Freebooted - Tech4 News - Incarna: The Text Adventure - Guild Launch EVE Correspondent |

eSPort lol Thats even worse than watching hamster races It is forbidden to kill. Therefore all murderers are punished unless they kill in large numbers and to the sound of trumpets.

I do not believe it will be any good if I'm honest for these reasons. The biggest audience for this kind of thing is FPS games. The format works because every player has access to the same things. Then it is down to raw skill to how he uses those items around the playfield to score the win.
Eve I cannot see taking off like this because there will be alot of boring fights. Fights will no doubt be totally miss matched. If there is a 1 on 1 both lets say in Hurricanes It then comes down to fit skills and who has the most SP.
Fully maxed cane Vs mediocre skilled cane = 1 winner only [unless the maxed guy is an idiot] = boring to watch
You could say this is the reason why Kil2s videos are all kinds of win. You don't know what he's gonna come up against so that alone gives it the excitement factor and keeps people like me glued to his videos. |

EVE != SC2. It is pretty much the opposite of spectator friendly. TEST Alliance BEST Alliance |

the problem with EVE is , its a continued struggle for supremacy. If you just put 10 guys in a room and tell them to fight, its nothing more than just watching goldfishes brawling. EVE is a marathon, not a sprint. And eSport NEEDS to be sprints for the drama factor.

Eve is a terrible Esport, spectators have no clue how much time was wasted getting those mediocre skills up. A narrow mind is a focused mind. |

Esports in Eve?
Maybe if they can properly balance all the ships in this game, which we all know will never happen. Eve is an awesome game, but it has as much in common with Esports as cars with olympics. |

Esports bleh, Alliance tournament somewhat bleh.
I'd pay to watch a thunderdome EVE tournament in which they drop every team without warning into a 50km cage and mass chaos ensues. That is more the spirit of eve gameplay really. |

A bunch of cynical, Eve-douches in here....lawdy.
I for one can't wait to see this tournament, and the many, many more to follow. I'm a huge fan of the Alliance Tournament and feel that eSports will be great for Eve. "The world as we know it came about through an anomaly (anomou)" (The Gospel of Philip, 1-5)-á |

I'm unclear as to how a Tournament that can be fixed before hand would be good "Esport"? The very nature of the game dictates that any money tournament will be fixed and manipulated from the start. Anything less, wouldn't be EVE...

E-Sports ?
Come on only big alliances are alowed to any turnament etc, i wont spent real money like buy 10-20 plex to get ability to play eve in e-sport (area) first im poor and two im noob in eve, Even if i were rich and good , EvE offer only E-segment for group of people, here nothing for ordinary solo player, even some people are good at solo gaming.
Also no ofence but EvE is far away form E-sport dedicated for mass, i remember times like two year ago where people have to pay for better quality for stream tv etc, while other top MMOs offer to people same rights and no penalty while live turnaments events... Fuuu, is like spliting EvE comunity betwen two parts, good and bad...
In my opinion EvE turnament got low interest because event it self are very restricted and move around people caled elite... And here only few of them. |

Having worked on pro gaming for a well known trading card game with a strong pro-gaming component (and a pioneer in the concept of competitive gaming and games being as big as sports...), here are a few thoughts
First. Have all characters skills set to lvl 5 reagrdless of said character current development just during the Eve-Sport event. The strategy and skills resides in the assemblage of ships, choices of modules and how they are used in space.
Second. Spece combat can provide a pretty good show, that can be enjoyed even by non-specialists. Have each engagement be presented like a story, with neutral dangers like hostile sentry guns, or asteroids, or any other thing that add some spice to the otherwise dull maneuvering in empty space. it also help adds visual effects to the broadcast.
Third. Team based games are fun, but best e-sport games may be solo based i.e. One player against another. Teams introduces factors that are less controlled in an internet/online setting than in a real life Setting. Finding team mates, Team collusions potentials, metagaming, advantage of large existing groups over the majority of players out there and many other issues... Still Space combat is more fun with multiple ships interactions, and more visually appealing. So have 1 player vs another player for each battle, but have each player control 3 or 4 characters simul;taneously (even granting extra characters for those with no alt accounts). The actions in game will be slower, the skill set required to control properly all ships higher, and the shoutcasters will have more time to explain what is happening with each players choices and provide their expert advices on the situation unfolding.
Four. Only put a nominal entry fee or no fee at all to enter e-sport. E-sport is a marketing tool, and you have players that already pay to play. High entry fees is simply ridiculous and too elitist..
