Destroyers have been pointless for years, frigates do the small jobs better and cruisers and up are preferred for the dps and other things. Destroyers are good for... lvl 1 missions?
CCP is trying to change all that but a growing number of people are realizing the real purpose of destroyers has been with us since....WWI.
Destroyers are great at hunting down the submarines in the navy...so why not take that amazing warfare dynamic and bring it into EVE? Give destroyers a module that allows them to hunt down and hopefully sink...i mean blow up, those silent service ships that cloak up. Thats right, the covert ops ships that sneak around under fleets noses, or the stealth bomber wolf packs that cause chaos to fleets....now there can be a way to fight back!
Having cloak hunting destroyers in your fleet wil be very important now too. Destroyers would be really good at probing for cloaked ships and maybe frigates would have a more limited role as hunters since they are smaller ships.
Here is another part of this....since cloak ships are suddenly becoming targets and can be hunted down given time by destroyers...maybe its time to give cloaked ships more power too. Here are some ideas.
Cloaked ships no longer get uncloaked when something gets near them!
Cloaked ships no longer take massive penalties, if a ship uses a slot for a cloak and the ship can handle it, let them use it to the fullest! the whole cloak nerf on ships was just to try and balance them, well now hunter destroyers (maybe frigates too) balances that out.
Think of it, now destroyers will be a must in a fleet too!! Go destroyers and tin cans!
I think this is a great idea and would add more strategy to the war games of EVE...what do you think??

Interesting but not enough content proposed to support or reject. What kind of probing are we talking about? A ship bonus to normal probes that allows probing cloaked ships or a whole new type? How is it going to decloak them once on grid with them? And the opposite end is one of the main reasons for cloaking for extended periods of time is the 100% accurate intel local chat gives.
I fully support the idea of adding a way to hunt cloaked ships effectively but we need a redesign of the d-scanner and local chat systems first. Once we have a system that allows for people to genuinely sneak around, then we can talk about hunting cloaked vessels. The Troll is trolling. |

The captain paced the bridge nervously as his fleet approached the wreckage of several mining ships.
Captain: Anything from the scouts yet?
Comm officer: Nothing sir, D-scan is coming up empty and the probers canGÇÖt find anything.
Captain: They are out there ensign, I can smell them. SubGÇÖs right under our noses.
Ensign: SubGÇÖs sir?
Captain: an old nautical term planet side, submarines that sneak under the water, waiting to put torpedoes into your hull. These cloaked ships are nothing but SubGÇÖsGǪ.I need some god damn destroyers!
Ensign: Sir, I think they heard you!
Captain: WhoGǪwhat?
Comm officer: DESRON Six just warping in on the starboard side Captain. Five Catalyst class destroyers.
Captain: give me comms with their squad commander!
DESRON SIX: Hey old man, need a hand finding those subs?
Captain: You bet I do, get your destroyers set up and hunt those subs before I have torpedoes heading toward my cruisers.
DESRON SIX: Aye, will take a little time but we can at least scare them off if nothing else.
Destroyer Squadron Six comprised of five destroyers. All of them had the newly designed hedgehog anti cloaking devices. The modules were designed to fire off charges that would scan for dead space pockets, interrogate them and if it was a ship, it would alert the destroyers sensors and the chase would be on.
GǪhours laterGǪ
DESRON SIX: Well captain we destroyed two of those subs, the rest got away, all in all a pretty good day. Captain: You can say that, but it was not a good day for this mining fleet those subs decimated. Alright, lets swing the fleet around and head home, DESRON SIX your staying with my fleet now!

Because i love the game silly, and i love things that make sense in the game. AFK cloaking makes no sense and should not be supported by game mechanics just like log off tactics or macro mining which CCP rightfully fixed.
AFK mining is boring, manipulative and dirty. The way to make the game fun is to find ways for both hunter and hunted to have fun.
I love cloaking and cloak ships, i am a HUGE fan of submarine history too :) I support cloaking in the game and i can do that without supporting those who just cloak and go afk for hours in an enemy system just to mess with people.
My idea makes cloaking more powerful and it also gives the enemy a way to fight back in a fun, historical, realistic way.
Make fun! |

I am all for a cloaky killer/finder, but I would say that it should be a module of some sort and the destroyer would have bonuses for it. |

(Several threads have already made this point, usually in response to cries of nerf afk cloaking)
As for that, even I have suggested possible ideas. I had a thread regarding one from back in March that used specialized probes.
Heck, it even becomes possible to expand the stealth wars further once the groundwork is established.
I can see this being a lot of fun. Cloaking being on a ten minute manual cycle timer? (Author: Bree Okanata) Fine. As long as there is a ten minute timer for being docked in a station. Also, you can't stop moving in the game. Just add in a way so every ten minutes you are randomly warped to the nearest other player. Keeps people from going AFK. |

Following the Sub hunt Idea...
High slot module
Name: Light deflection field disruption pulse generator Type: De-cloaking Pulse generator Power: 15 MW CPU: 50 tf Activation Cost: 200 GJ Reload: 60sec Range: 20KM + 5/level per skill* ( Max 45KM )
*Either new skill or use an existing energy emissions one.
Its not 100% in the details but it would be a module that can de-cloak any ship in range with a fairly long reload to compensate.
I based the numbers on a Catalyst so it would be almost half the Cap to fire it and takes up the same power and CPU as two Tech 2 125mm rail guns.
You can fit only one per ship so to effectively guard a fleet you need several guys spaced out to get coverage. The range is based on the max range of a bomb being 30KM, this gives the bomber some gaps to get into as well.
Also this would de-cloak friendlies as well.
I realize this would be useful for gate camps as well. See gate go active, pop the de-cloak, WIN! But wait the guy can still warp away before getting target locked and simply re-cloak on route to his target.
Aside from fleet operations, enough ships could warp to and de-cloak a smaller system fairly quickly.

Here ya go, made you some subs so your destroyer idea has something to play with.
https://forums.eveonline.com/default.aspx?g=posts&t=163788&find=unread
The whole idea is based on changes to local and something allowing hunting for cloaked ships.
I described it as broken yet balanced, since it goes to extremes good and bad. Cloaking being on a ten minute manual cycle timer? (Author: Bree Okanata) Fine. As long as there is a ten minute timer for being docked in a station. Also, you can't stop moving in the game. First off, dessies have been underutilized for years, but have had major buffs over the last two years...
Currently, they are far, far from useless, and see very regular use in PvP (especially in FW).
Second, any anti-cloaking or cloak hunting technology must be properly balanced to not inhibit the primary function of cloaks... I personally believe cloaks have a very appropriate drawback, and that we really don't need cloak hunters, as you'll hurt the primary purpose of cloaks.... to hide, and to travel more safely... |

Stopped reading there as you clearly have your head up your arse.
Dessies are fantastic at what they are supposed to do, killing frigates.

I would appreciate more constructive feedback rather than insults. I have repeatedly shown my support for cloaking and for fun ways to improve the game around cloaking. I do not support AFK cloaking and i think my idea is pretty good. Please build on it or suggest otherwise. |

I do not believe cloaking should be limited to psych warfare, or travel with the intention of avoiding PvP.
I have no trouble with these, but I want cloaking to be more than this.
I want cloaking to be a different approach to PvP, not just a means to avoid it.
I think cloaking should reflect preparation being leveraged into possible advantage. I think defense against cloaked vessels should require preparation as well, and not be handed out freely by chat channels.
The earmarks of a whole other level of gameplay potential are here, but we keep using this safe mode. A chat channel that gives a sense of safety, but takes away something many do not understand or realize. Cloaking being on a ten minute manual cycle timer? (Author: Bree Okanata) Fine. You can already deal with cloakers, you just have to wait for them to do something (or trick them into it). |

I'd rather not introduce a ship or module that in one fell swoop destroys wormhole gameplay entirely, as well as destroying or severely crippling numerous other necessary activities in null/low sec
