Civil service on 11/11/2011 starting at 13:30 (with 10-minute slots), so if I'm lucky, pronouncement will be at 13:37. Yes, we got the reservation confirmation already. MWAHAHAHA.
Wife keeps old name, we'll also be filing for separate finances (hooray, finally the laws that allow that come into effect in a little over a month from now), will still be living in separate cities and just visit eachother when we can find the time for a while, until the "big wedding" (probably somewhere in April, or maybe later), when we MIGHT be moving in together.
When I say "big wedding" I mean everything except the civil service - you know, all that stuff with the stupid church (hopefully we can get a under-10-minute service there too, we're both non-religious anyway, but the older relatives are, so, meh) and the sort-of-party with oodles of relatives and acquaintances afterwards.
By the way, the day was her idea, the hour was mine (but I didn't tell her why :evulz:). And SHE asked me to get married all out of the blue (it was just hours after she got back to her home after a 1-week visit over here), and I said "oh, well, why not" How freaking romantic, eh ?
The relationship has been going on for nearly 10 years now (with two breaks), but more than half of it was medium distance (3h drive or so) with about two and a half years of long distance (different countries) in 3 separate countries (USA, Germany, Turkey) overlapping both. Also, never lived together under the same roof so far (visiting doesn't count, right?) so it might get dicey when we finally move in together, heh. Freaky arrangement, eh ?
Oh, well, guess this means my heavy posting days will be coming to an end sooner or later... I'll still be around for sure, but not as much as usual. Heh.

Congrats!
My wife and I aren't religious either, and we got married in a non-church setting (Linkage) by a retired judge (which is legal in TX). Not sure if weddings in Romania have to be done by clergy, but if a religious wedding isn't required by law... you might want to look into it. ---------.oOo.---------- Chaos, Madness, and Destruction. As soon as the civil service is over, we're already officially man and wife. No religious ceremony necessary as far as the law is concerned.
However, the "peer pressure" from the older relatives (and there's plenty of those to go around on HER side) make at least a token of a religious ceremony necessary. Afterall, Romania is sadly even more religious that the USA (belief in God is over 90%, among the highest in Europe), and even older people that aren't really that religious at all would still insist on the religious ceremony "because that's how things are done". Oh, well.

A Romanian wedding is usually a "half a day" affair, starting before noon (church) and ending after midnight (at the party area), with another get-together (but only for people with closer relationship to the bride and groom) for a few hours the next day. The "party" time (usually minimum 6 hours, quite often 8 hours or longer) is expected to be spent at least half on the dance floor, with a multi-course meal (usually 5 courses or more, and almost nobody is a vegetarian, so such options are seldom even considered) spread in between dancing sessions, with a wide selection of drinks (mostly alcoholic) available at all times.
Tradition for Romanian marriages is not to give useless appliance gifts or such (as is the case for an US wedding), but usually to give cash gifts. No, seriously, it's Romanian custom, ask around (or google it). Cash. Really.
The "polite" minimum amount of contribution depends on relationship to the bride and groom - godfathers are expected to contribute the most, distant relatives and casual acquaintances are expected to contribute the least - and should at a minimum be slightly over the likely amount spent by the wedding organizers per guest (so it also depends on location the wedding is held, duration, quality of food and service, how much fun you had, etc). So, for instance, a single guest of minimal relation to the wedding couple (just enough to get invited) would be expected to contribute somewhere in the vicinity of 135-170 USD equivalent (400-500 RON) at a bare minimum, just to avoid looking like a jerk, but double of that is considered rather generous.
Hey, partying is rather cheap over here.
Lately, the gifts are usually handed over NEAR THE END OF THE PARTY in sealed but named envelopes, and are opened by the bride and groom's family after the wedding is over. People (which are normally seated based on relationship to bride and groom) usually discuss with eachother how much they're going to donate based on how enjoyable the experience was. It USED to be much cheesier before though, with the collection being a public affair (starting with the godfathers and moving down the "closeness to wedding couple" ranks) and the M.C. shouting out the donated amounts. Yes, lame, but it's still practiced in quite a few places (and the amounts donated by the godfathers are expected to "set the tone" as far as donation amounts go). We're not having any of that though.

Open bar, of sorts, yeah, that's also a tradition. Meaning the hard liquor is spread quasi-evenly all around the tables with some reserves off the tables in case any runs out (and ice brought forth more or less constantly), but the lighter drinks like beer and such are usually kept in the cooler and you need to ask for it.

Heh, thanks. Also, I'll still be around, just less often and in shorter sessions.

Grats on your impending nuptuals, hope it all goes smoothly.
I'm not going to bother with marriage myself; I'm just going to find a woman I don't like and buy her a house.
Thank you thank you, try the veal, I'm here 'till thursday.

Ayup, she does. Not a gamer chick though, but tolerates my "gaming needs" to a higher degree than the stereotypical woman. I can only assume that's going to drastically change as soon as a kid will enter the picture, you can call my gaming days suspended for a few years for sure in that case. Heh.
She's more of a travel enthusiast (semi-obsessed with Asia and the Middle East), she's been to a truckload more countries than I have - other than the three mentioned before (USA, Germany, Turkey) where she lived for months at a time, she's quite often visited Poland, also been to Thailand and Malaysia, and wants to visit China and Nepal, also spend a good while in India whenever she can spare the time. In the "downtimes" while together, usually keeping busy with movies and TV shows. At least in the movie/series department we have mostly overlapping tastes. She's not too much into sci-fi, but not against it either, and I have wider tastes that the stereotypical man, so, eh. She co-owns (with her mother) a small jewelry business (faring rather poorly in this economy though, but before it was the perfect excuse to engage in travel "for shop supply") and is also working as a full-time high-school biology teacher (specialized in German-speaking classes). She's also wrapping up her 3-year doctorate (in silkworm rearing), should be done by the end of summer in 2012 if all goes well.

Congrats Akita and let me not be the first to welcome you into the... sometimes happy world of married life.
I think you've got a hedged bet with a wife that travels. I know my marriage would have been stressful in short order if I were not over-seas quite a bit myself. Absence making the heart grow fonder and all that.
