Ladies and gentlemen, I present the first draft of my Deep Space Probe guide. (Excel 2003 format)
The write up/instructions are mostly done, the high-sec section is almost complete, low-sec is about half done and null-sec I haven't started yet.
Any constructive criticism would be welcome

Edited by: Shaniqua Kadesh on 16/08/2011 15:07:32 Has anyone else noticed that there are glitches with this system? Albight rare.
I have had some odd results that are cleared up by repositioning the DSP.
example...
I enter system and launch DSP. scan shows a sig at .19 which is not on my list of known sig strengths. Reposition DSP rescan and same sig is .2 which corresponds to my list. I have verified this by scanning down the sig.
Anyone else have this problem?
edit PS Great guide.

There's bound to be a bit of noise related to the probe's proximity to the signature. 0.01 sounds like a reasonable variation for moving a deep space probe at max scan radius. Even with the noise it's still close enough to pin it to a "signature band" as indicated in the spreadsheet.

My question is this: is it advantageous to use the DSP method if you are interested in running several different types of sites?
I can see how, if you were looking for one specific site (e.g. a 4/10), it would be easy to eliminate every site not belonging to that signature band. But let's say I want to do 3/10's, 4/10's, unrated plexes, and radars. There's something in every band, so that first step of elimination (the very thing DSPs are good for!) is no longer helpful.
I find I can scan down a system and eliminate uninteresting sites more quickly by spewing forth a mighty spread of core probes and checking each planet in sequence. Am I missing something?

I've been waiting for something like this. I've been exploring for most of the year that I've played and since I started reading the forums more, I've realized that I'm missing some of the finer points of scanning strategies. Thanks much.

Thanks for the comments guys :)
Shaniqua Kadesh: with DSPs I also get +-0.01% variation so it's not unusual. It's a bit of a pain for the weaker strength sites because their values are closer
Tabernack en Chasteaux: if you're looking for sites in all the bands then in my opinion it's not really worth using DSPs because you're going to end up eventually scanning down all the signatures in a system.
If you keep track of all the signatures you come across and fly in loops around the same circuit; then you could use the DSPs to get a list of all the signatures without having to go into Map View and using multiple probes, and check with your notes to see if any new sites have spawned.
Also if you have a list of sigs right before DT and use DSPs right after DT, the sig strengths will still be the same so you can update your notes with the new sig IDs.
DeMichael Crimson: I changed the link to a different server, should work now *crosses thumbs*
Also if I suddenly disappear and don't reply it's because Emperor Salazar has had me "taken care of" for letting the cat out of the bag

Nice spreadsheet
I think there's a strength level missing though - I sometimes find wormholes (R943) with a signal between your yellow and light cyan levels (~0.17 I think)

Edited by: Daesis Wrack on 21/08/2011 17:18:45 I can help you out a little bit with this.
First, the strength calculation. Sig sizes come in the following values: 1, 2.2, 2.5, 4, 5, 6.67, 10, 20. The hit strength from 1 deep space probe is: Base sensor strength * Sig size / 512.
Secondly, all k162 wormholes have the same Sig size, regardless of what kind of wormhole it is on the other side.

@ Vega: Thanks, I'll be adding that in the next draft
@ Daesis: I really owe you big time . I'm surprised all the K162s are the same, I assumed a K162 for a C1->HS would have higher strength than one from a C5->HS
I plan on visiting low and null this week to populate the rest of the sheets o7

Nice stuff, made me fly to Jita and buy exploration equipment. Much to my surprise, a DSP does not fit into a Core Probe Launcher. Should I use the Expanded Probe Launcher instead? For some reason I always believed that the former is the way to go for exploration.

You must have an Expanded launcher for DSPs (or combat or moon probes). If you want a combat ship that can fit one, your best bet would be a T3 with the probing sub, they only need 2.2 CPU instead of 220.

To me, this is the #1 reason the Tengu is the ship of choice for exploration. Great for PvE and can be fit for DSP use.
I could see the Legion being a nice alternative though in regards to cargo capacity; I carry around spare subsystems (interdiction nullifying and accelerated launcher - I have covert ops fit by default) so cargo can get limited.

Hey St. Mio - good post
I've been doing the same sort of thing in WH space and I can give you a quick outline and I'll send my list of WH sizes to you later. I've made three main catagories - Large, Medium, and small which normally every thing (but WH's) fit into. Mediums are half the strength of Larges and smalls are half the strength of mediums.
For WH's, the starting side WH can vary all cross the map but Exiting WH's (K162) are always Large.
For Grav and Ladar sites All Perimeter sites are always large All Frontier sites are medium All Core sites are small
For Mag and Radar sites - they are all small
So - if your looking for a Mag/Radar site, drop one DSP and do a scan at 256AU - you will see the bands and just ignore the upper two bands - Example - If Large was at 0.5 then Mediums will be at .25 and smalls will be at 0.12 (or 0.13). Just ignore any sigs not at that small band and you will have a lot shorter time scanning.
Any sigs not fitting in these bands will always be a WH

So, my trip into null started off well enough and I was making good progress until my client started disconnecting every 5 minutes
@ Ugly Boy Woman: I'll add a note about the fitting requirements and mention ships with fitting bonuses in the next update :)
@ Aandaan: Thanks I'd really appreciate that

This seems to be an issue with the forums itself and not the link, I've been unable to use any links from eve-forums today.

What are you doing on page 2? You're a good thread, you don't belong here.
Also, this is probably reason enough for me to Astrometrics V.
