New player here. Been mining Omber with a Scythe. I'm able to make about 50k ISK per hour so hopefully I'll make back the 4+mil I spent fitting my Cruiser. I'm trying to get into a Mining Barge as soon as possible. In the meantime should I be doing mining missions for standings, LP, and ISK? I'm just wondering how vital running missions is if I'm going to be a miner.
Also, any general tips on Mining/Industry would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

Edited by: Taedrin on 09/08/2011 02:04:37 Running missions is only vital for acquiring standings so that you can refine without tax. Mining missions are rather time consuming - courier missions are better for grinding standings. BEFORE the mission/agent changes, there were a few locations where you could run up to 5 couriers at once, all from the same system and the same corporation. I don't know if these locations still exist or not.
Please refer to this website when mining, as Omber hasn't been worthwhile to mine since before the drone regions were added. And that was a looooooonnnnnngggg time ago.
It looks like that the most valuable high sec ore is veldspar again. Every once inawhile the mineral market destabilizes due to a change in mineral distribution. Sooner or later though, veldspar makes its way back on top again.
Personally, I call shenanigans on Chribba. ----------

Points go to Taedrin for being the only one on topic. I will see how much I can make mining Veldspar. Yea though I Mine through the valley of Veldspar, I will fear no Ganking: for Chribba art with me; His roids and Veldnought comfort me.

After the mission change I moved my home base. In the new system I did not have standings for free refine. But I did have access to the L3 mining agent (via faction standings) at my new station so I did those missions. I put my Orca pilot alt out with the links running and spammed the missions.
You will not believe how fast a mining mission goes in a hulk with orca support! All those roids CCP helpfully puts 20 km away are suddenly in range. In little time I had my free refine and access to the L4 combat agent in my new station.
And yes, King Veldspar is back.

While we are on the subject, what are l4 mining missions like? I have not done any, but was thinking about trying mining missions for a change of pace.

In answer to the OP's question imo mining missions are a horrible way to gain standing. The level 1's are tolerable if you have at least a retriever. The level twos on the other hand you need a barge with a bigger hold if you don't want to make multiple trips. Or have a hauler alt with you. The worst thing about the level 2's is the distance that the ore you have to mine is from the warp in point. traveling 20-40 km in a barge is obnoxious.
I've stopped doing them for now and have my refiner/hauler alt just doing distribution missions. I'm sure it is only a matter of time though before the distribution missions throw some obnoxious obstacle at me too.

Actually my question was whether standings were necessary for a miner planing on moving into invention/ISK making in the future.

only if you plan doing R&D missions for datacores, but then, only few corps have that division ;)

THAT was your question. Not sure where you asked the other stuff. Maybe the other people that answered were mind readers.

I apologize. I guess there was a gap between what I said and what I thought I said.

No problem. I just did a double take and had to reread your original because I suddenly thought I had accidentally responded to the wrong thread or something.

It only takes a day or two to train up to fly a Caracal enough to complete Level 2 missions with ease. Even if you're not mapped per/wil the training time is minimal.
If you need standings, I would suggest to you to train to fly a Caracal, and run level 2 securiy missions like crazy.
