Team BFF have their sights on nullsec iteration and in his new blog, CCP Greyscale gives some insight into the preparation that's taken place, and shares the design guidelines that will guide them safely through 0.0.
Many of you have strong ideas of your own about what nullsec should be, and the team wants your feedback. So as always...leave your comments right here.

Sounds nice you're asking for ideas so soon.
One thing that struck me first as i read it:
Quote: Cost is a useful variable to tune but an unwise thing to rely on to enforce scarcity or balance - players will always be richer than you think
You have forgot to put maintenance cost on the elite stuff. Capitals might use fuel just like POS. Would add ISK cost and logistics tasks into having them.

Edited by: Kenpachi Viktor on 03/08/2011 14:51:26 When I read "EVE turned up to 11", my understanding is that it's not just "lots more of the same", but also better stats (when you hold sov). Eg. empire has 100% refining in stations, null sec has 110%; Empire has 50 production/science slots per station, null sec has 100 & they are %5 faster and more efficient. POSs in empire are normal, corp POSs in their alliance's sovereign space are up to 10% better.

I'm with him, at the moment lowsec is completely broken and all I ever see are small changes to nullsec and huge changes to highsec. Can you guys at least turn lowsec into NPC nullsec instead of wasting so much space?

This is very exciting.
I moved out of nullsec a few years ago. I make WAY more isk in empire and low sec than I ever did in 0.0... but when I lived in 0.0 I did have more fun. The only thing keeping me out is the ISK I make elsewhere and the fact that small alliances don't have a foothold. I've been in several corps and alliances (in the distant past) and the smaller groups were always more fun... just a few pods trying to break a piece off for themselves (FYI if you are new to the game I can't recommend the corp "Demon Womb" enough...). Good times.
I'll leave some 'usefull' feedback later when I have time to think about it and write, but in the meantime I just want to say this is a good start and I like where you head is at CCP. His name was John Turbefield!

I still say that you need to look at something like old Planetside (and possibly PS2, if they keep the model) for ideas about how to create interlinked, strategic targets and early-warning, operational and tactical intel tools.
Yes, fighting over resources is one way of creating conflict, but what about fights over the the tools of fighting? This game kind of lacks a fog of war and methods to create, combat, and take advantage of this kind of intel. It's all about seeing the enemy and or getting annoyed by the warning mail spam ù a lot more could be done to promote sneaking (and not just to cloak-gank or AFK-cloak-terrorise PvE:ers) where small teams can actually create strategically important situations in small-scale fights. ùùù ôWe want to try this thing called micro-transactions, but we don't know what it is. Can anyone explainà aw screw it, let's just do it! What could go wrong?ö ù ÇÇP |

IMHO you've got it right when players will run mining/industry ops in null sec that yield profits such that:
It pays for other alliance pilots (isk/hr) to fly combat air patrols to protect the op It will be worth the time of rival alliances to come disrupt the op
Likewise for other logistics such as transport of goods etc. These activities should be both quite quick (so as to avoid long boring ops), high risk and high reward.
We want to see an alliance escorting a convoy of x to y papping their pants every jump because the potential loss is big and the potential gain bigger.
To balance the 'quick & high gain' nature of these events they should be well telegraphed so rival alliances know when and where to disrupt if they wish.

Quote:
See: Jump bridges, cyno jammers, Sov 4, AoE doomsdays, titans in general, supercarrier boost...
This list does not bode well for the future of 0.0. Lumping jump bridges and cyno jammers in with AoE doomsdays and steamroller supercapitals misses the point by such a margin I don't even know what to think.
Jump bridges are the best thing CCP had ever done for EVERYONE living in 0.0, the nerf has done nothing to impede major blob activities, has even helped force projection, but has made 0.0 infinitely more difficult for the individual line member.

make the areas of null that are considered 'very poor' easier to hold. The more you resources you get out of a system, the harder it is to hold.
When you are in the process of isk making, find a way to make it a lot more lucrative if the player has some sort of pvp interaction. Maybe require them to enter space held by another alliance (modify the escalation system)
Look at how hard it can be for individuals in big regions of blue space to enter the combat arena. 20 something jumps in a BS to catch the tail end. (lower jumpclone delay if a station where the clone is at has a special modual)

Very nice! This blog deserves to be spotlighted for the following statements, which should be included on ANY blog that is speculating about the future. This one thing alone would help prevent so much of the miscommunication between CCP and the players.
The bit where I add some disclaimers
Before getting into the actual details, here are the parameters we're working from:
- This is all still in pre-production. We've spent some time fleshing out some very high-level "epic" user stories to improve our understanding of what we want, but there's been minimal design and zero implementation work undertaken as of yet.
- As a consequence of the above, a lot of it is deliberately light on detail. Everything listed here is subject to development, refinement and/or eventual rejection. We're trying to see the forest here, not the trees.
- We're trying to create a long-term plan rather than a single-expansion feature list. Some of this will probably never actually happen. Some of it will take a loooong time to get done. If we finish the majority of this plan in the next five years I'd be extremely happy. The biggest win here in the meantime is having a clear overall direction that we can use to determine what to work on first and how those things should function.

I hope you pass the points about 'mandatory chores that players hate' on to the PI team
Looks like you agree with many of the actual players on what the 0.0 experience should be like.
You want the solution to your isk problems and stationary alliances that gobble up all the good stuff ? Make moon goo resources dynamic, being able to be mined into exhaustion, and 'new deposits' appearing on random moons. Then alliances actually have a reason to move around on the map and fight. Same for system truesec. When it is being ratted to death, the security should quickly start to approach 0.0. This has the added advantage of spreading out players more and making life harder for botters and AFK cloakers, and easier for new alliances to get some good space and maybe even a good moon for a little while.

"Nullsec features and content should always remind players why they left safe space, and never make them think about going back"
Was this considered when you applied the Nerf-Bat to half of null sec with the whole system security thing? No Havens or Sanctums in any system with a security above -.25? A few losses in and I was broke with no real income source beyond my market toon. That only goes so far, as one needs gold to breed gold. I made decent isk running the forsaken sites because they have a high chance to spawn a faction rat, but it didn't take long for others to realize this too and my income stream was terminated. Thus I went back to high sec/low sec to grind missions, and run tasty Radar sites. That was 6 months ago, and have I've not even considered going 'back' to null sec: The Land of Boredom. Go team.

Nullsec isn't guaranteed to make everyone happy. If you like empire better, that's life.
