As a Developer and if we have to license the API / assets from CCP to release our products consuming this..
Will CCP PROTECT us from lawsuits from patent holders such as Lodsys and Apple Apps store?

I know the API license is still in the air, but want to throw this out there so BizDev can think about this issue that is hitting all App store developers currently in the US app stores where patents apply.

Yeah but if you want to distribute it over the Apple App store or Android, unless do they have EU versions of the app stores that arn't impacted by patents?

no.
there will always be patent scammers who send letters and threaten lawsuits in the hopes that you cave and give them money.
someone has done it to almost every mmog out there that uses database transactions
someone has done it to every major online retailer with a shopping cart
The Village Voice has tried it with every news outlet with "voice" in their name
vague generalized patents allow these crooks to get away with it, but it rarely ever goes to court, again the goal is to get you to cave and write a check.
frankly no outfit offering api licenses will protect you from violating someone elses patent that isnt directly related to the api, IE: if you violate a patent in your app design you get no help.
Apple is just trying to protect their app store from scum trying to enforce a vague patent about an app having the ability to perform a sales transaction (or to simplify, a shopping cart in an app)

Lodsys is suing the developers

This thread is primarely directed at CCP BizDev team while they ponder on the plans for the Developer License.
This is the very real state of the app world currently and thus developers need to know where they stand with regard to consuming a 3rd party license.
Perhaps the only way to protect us is for CCP to create an EVE app store (even for FREE apps) and keep that under the EU (Yes EEA is including Iceland - which btw is pursing FULL EU membership as we speak - I can link this if you want) but that doesn't help website developers consuming the license.
