I have been playing since 2007. As of late I have been trying my best to become better at this game. However it seems whenever I lock someone it turns to instant destruction for my ship and my isk.
I have near max medium projectiles on my HAC V vagabond and I can't pop the warp scrambling stiletto at 15km from me.
Please, I have too much invested in this game. It is becoming not fun for me anymore. I need some guidance or I am unsubbing.

Yeah basically the same fit, except I use T2 LSE and small neut T2. Barrage has good range but low numbers in tracking. Against that stiletto I switched to RF EMP M.

Fly away from him. If he's orbiting you then his ship will follow, and transversal will drop and you will pop him.
If he's a good tackler though, he will be watching for that and will turn his ship to keep transversal up. But you only need a couple of volleys to connect. The second or two it takes him to see you turning away from him may be all you need. Interceptors are very squishy but hard to get a good hit on.

Greetings darkblack:
What I've done in the past is change the ammo to either RF Depleted Uranium M or RF Titanium Sabot M, change to keep at distance (in my opinion, this should be >= max overheated point range), and shoot. If you are hitting, start overheating especially when near breaking shields. That plus Warrior II's which you keep using the drone engage command (which, unless CCP changed things, has the drone try to hit from their position and get closer).
If they try to close to get more under your guns, that's where the energy neutralizer comes into play.
Of note, there have been times where keep at range doesn't seem to do a lot for those that orbit fast; in those times, I try to pick a celestial away from my current position, and burn towards that celestial. Overheat the MWD if needed to force them to follow lowering their transversal.
Thank you. --- Mara Abraham

Hurricane doesn't help you much here. Its slower and the 425mm ACs have worse tracking than the 220s on the Vagabond. As for having friends... I'm not opening up that can of worms.

You are much better aligning than using keep at range. They are more agile than you and you won't be able to turn fast enough to dictate range. Instead align to a celestial, overheat MWD, and use high-tracking damage if they're already in orbit around you. If you're in no danger of getting caught by heavy support then shutting down your MWD and waiting until they are coming round behind you before hitting it for an overheated pulse will do the job nicely.
You should be looking to switch your fit up to a medium neutraliser, though. Otherwise they can come in to 10 km range and warp scramble you will still being comfortably under your guns. Nothing you can do to shake them off at that point unless they just sit there and die to warriors. Medium neut solves this problem.

Read Wensley's rifer guide (google it), buy a stack of ships and lose them.
After that, start pvp-ing in cruisers and battlecruisers. After that try the vagabond again.
Oh and join a corp that does lowsec stuff.

You probably know this, but in order to be able to warp scramble at 15km he must have had two out of: - a T3 Loki in the same fleet and system boosting him with an Interdiction Maneuvers Skirmish Warfare Link module. - an expensive scrambler (e.g. Domination/Dark Blood) - overheat

Looking at BC you've got some nice kills and a lot of solo kills recently. Yes, there are deaths but you seem to be good at avoiding being blobbed to death. So I'd say you're "doing it right" and keep up the good work. Learning from experience and all.
That said, a mentor can always help you improve faster; can you find one within your corp or alliance? If not, you might want to hit up Podcat on Failheap Challenge; he sells soloing lessons and he's pretty good but it'll cost you. - sig |

Edited by: Easley Thames on 17/07/2011 10:06:18 Your best bet for a frigate is to do heavy damage on their approach.
Once he's in scram range, do anything you can to reduce transversal.
Your neut should be on whenever he's in range, this can help you turn off his mwd or scram long enough to pull range.
I also suggest ec-300 over warriors in a vaga. A cynabal can carry both, and is a much better ship overall for only about 50% more money.
And for my money, a nano cane or rupture is much more fun, especially when learning. You can engage things with less mental anguish when it doesn't work out. You even feel like a winner when you pop a tackler but die to a blob.

You want those meta4 extenders. It's way better to have a med neut than a better tank with small neut. The medium neut will reach 12,6 (right?). Most frigates cant do much while being neuted by a cruiser, atleast they will stop scramming/MWD/AB'ing to you. |

Yeah basically the same fit, except I use T2 LSE and small neut T2. Barrage has good range but low numbers in tracking. Against that stiletto I switched to RF EMP M.
1. Small neuts on a vaga are near useless. The medium neut is used for GTFO. While not relevant in this case because of #2, small neuts just don't neut enough to break tackles for a MWD pulse and their range allows for scrams to still be applied.
2. If you were scrammed from 15km they have skirmish links. (You get 16.2 with stilleto OL tech 2 non loki boosted alone) This is your worst nightmare. (That and skirmish linked gallenete recons)
3. Either carry warriors or ECM drones. Either would have helped. DON'T BRING HOBGOBLINS.
That's a tough break no matter what your in, as some one said before, you're doing just fine and need to just practice more. You jumped a vaga into a skirmish boosted inty/hac/BS group. Don't take it to hard.
**And in case anyone is curious, high tracking ammo would have been absolutely USELESS against this.

Very inflammatory and probably completely wrong.
An '07 char it might be, but 23m SP is exceedingly lean for a 4 year old char, so I'd wager heavily that he hasn't played a whole lot. Also usage of the phrase "as of late", implies he hasn't just been PvPing his entire EvE career.
As others have pointed out, he's also doing quite a bit right and sticking with solo stuff, which is the best way to learn good PvP skills rather than "have a gang for backup". Cut him some slack and offer some useful advice rather than saying you'll never be good.
Personally, I'd advise most of the above (particularly usage of med. neuts and ECM drones on a vaga) together with using Sisi to practice into the ground. You'll constantly get gangs on Sisi trying to blob you (practicing, just as you are) so it's an extremely valuable testing arena to hone your skills.
You'll also find people piloting ridiculous ships because there's no real loss value, so you'll engage a wider range of stuff and see how you fare.
Good luck.

No reason to fit a T2 med neut over a meta4, but anyway. I prefer the below.
EDIT: Taking out a damage control on a solo PvP fit is usually foolish. If you don't get more EHP from the LSE II's and the power diag, which you don't in this case (about 2k less actually), it's just stupid and wrong :P

It fits without any problems at all, has a fraction less EHP (33,257 compared to 33,436) and if you overheat the invuln (which you should, it lasts for 4 minutes with Thermodynamics at IV) then you get 35,731 EHP.
Cap lasts about 25secs less, but.. eh. Pulse the MWD. I still prefer it :D

NoLimit Soldier has sound advice. Ignore Sly Noble.
Use a DC II on a solo ship. A medium energy neut, PG4 and Zor's MWD implant, along with 3% implants for Agility and Turret dmg will make heaps of difference for their price.
Use a synth booster to improve falloff, yes, even more is nice. Always engage with Barrage.
Kitsune/Rook/Falcon, Skirmish boosted ceptors and Gallente recons are your worst enemies. If you're scrammed, you're usually fscked. Deal with it.
Others have commented you're doing GTFO well, which is, well, the larger part of the solo roam isn't it? Congrats, this alone means you're doing much better than some of the posters here.
Get these skills to 5:
Surgical Strike Trajectory Analysis Advanced Weapon Upgrades (A must for HACs) High Speed Maneuvering Warp Drive Operation Propulsion Jamming Long Range Targeting Targeting Signature Analysis Thermodynamics
Even having the above to 5, RF Sabot won't hit a good Stiletto pilot, a volley at best, and when you're scrammed you don't have the time for another volley. Few choices here, all discussed above, Warriors or ECM drones. Pick any 1. Warriors do nicely.
Other fits you might wanna consider are faction neuts, they have a nice range overheated, and recons have poor cap.
For a few roams, consider dropping the point for an invuln. If you like that setup, try a Cynabal, tho the Vaga invites fewer blobs.
Lookup killboards, evemail someone who's style you like and ask if they'll mentor you. A good vaga can chew thru a small frigate gatecamp.
Fit 10 Vagas, have 10 sets of implants, and roam some more.

Ok, are you looking for this PvP coach/mentor to guide you using this forum or were you looking for someone to fly with? You will find it a lot more fulfilling when you find that pilot to fly with and show you how to PvP. You must also consider what space you prefer to fly in for pew. You can find **** to shoot in HS (wardecs and FW), LS (piracy and/or pvp [there is a difference]), nullsec blobops (although I hear you can find some honest pew), and the benign nature of wormholes :P But, first thing is first, by now you should be getting off the forums, looking a pilot to fly with! |

my advice:
drop the vaga, a T2 cruiser is too expensive for your training period imo.
Ideally id run a cane instead. Its never going to be a vaga but you can loose about 3 fitted canes for each vaga you loose so thats an extra 2 chances to learn something.
many people advise against fitting reppers to ships in the modern buffer envrironment. I would disagree with this and say if you are solo-ing you should always try to run a repper or 2 to increase survivability - again more chances to learn.
lastly solo in 2011 is not solo circa 2006. You are fighting against an EvE that includes cruisers with 150k ehp, frigates with 50km points and whole groups of people that are conditioned to not engage unless they are going to win. In short solo is fun but for a much better learning experience i recommend you get in a good corp.
have fun
