I have been playing for about 5 weeks and so much has happened, to say the least!
I came from your basic MMO's and moved to new one every few months bored with repetition. Then in my search for a new game I discovered EVE Online. I read and read and listened to podcasts. I felt like I was prepared and downloaded the game.
I wanted to fight the Northern Coalition or be apart of the Northern Coalition. Be a part of epic space battles and struggles for power.
When I logged in for the first time I was so overwhelmed with everything I saw. The galaxy is truly awe inspiring. The graphics are unbelieveable, the way a sun peeks out from behind a planet makes me smile still everytime I log in.
I shorty realized that I have to be in this for the long haul. The 1.8 mil SP I have aquired is pathetic at best. The massive alliances for good and evil won't even consider me for 3-6 months. just winning a PVP match will take some time as the seasoned players dominate the galaxy. So I settle in for the long haul. I patiently mine and mission making some ISK and the ability to fly and fit the spips I need to kick some ass!
I am very happy with the game and all the options I have. I have nothing to grind. I only have the goals I have set for myself. Other games like that are hard to find.
I understand that CQ is a work in progress and the potential it has is fantastic. I can't wait to see where CCP takes it. I would hope i could walk up to someone in station and stab them in the face if I chose to......lol(would be so epic).
I am goiing to be patient and see where CCP goes with the game. I think the game you all have created is genius and I have faith that we will continue to make it a great place to play.
I know that many of you are angry and I'm prepared to be flamed back to the stone age. I will still encourage my friends to sign up.
This Game really is a blast to play........I mean come on!

You are right, EVE is a blast
People are angry, because we fear that EVE wont be as much a blast in the future if the road CCP seemingly is taken, is being held onto.
We just want to preserve a good game, if we didn't care, we would just quit, without a single word.

People were merely concerned that by the time the "cheating" happened, it would be too late. Being one of those people myself, I was concerned for the future of EVE.

No, it was more akin to finding text messages describing the graphic details of an affair on your wifes phone. But then she promises to not go more than 2 knuckles deep and it's with a woman, so we aren't mad at her anymore because it isn't cheating.
I think I lost the metaphor somewhere....

Oh! Eve is sooo perfect ! The world of Eve is sooo perfect ! The Developers are such geniuses ! Nothing could be done to improve this game because it is just such a perfect work of art by such increadibly talented people !
There... did I miss anything Dev Alts? Did I do my part?
(turns and walks off in disgust)

I never said it was perfect. Everything including our character have room for improvement. I will say the concept is brilliant.
I wish I was a Dev Alt and not a lowly construction worker, I think it would be much cooler indoors.....lol

Get Standing up with Security agent to do L4 missions. Then cycle through them till you get The Assault mission.
Then run it, all the way through the 3rd gate, daily for a week. Its good for about 25m isk each run. It takes an hour to get to the end. But well worth the isk. And youll get lots of salvage and loot.
I built my whole fleet doing Assault runs. There are places with multiple good L4 agents. Sometimes you can get multiple lines going all at once. mass isk coming in for new person.
Im still fairly new to eve. If it werent for L4 Missions, the good ones anywho, i would still be scraping around ore and 500k mission rewards for a Myrm....

It's been over 3 years since I was new to EVE and it is a truly wonderful game and experience. You seem to realize what a lot of other new players learn the hard way, and that is, your goals are all your own in this game and that makes it very special among other games.
If I could make a single recommendation it would be to establish quality relationships in the game and invest heavily in those. Who you fly with and the in-game/out-of-game experiences you share together makes for a fantastic use and enjoyment of time.

Moving from L3 to L4 missions made ALL THE DIFFERENCE in the world for me.
Not so much that the reards were better, they are a lot better, but the biggest part was Bounties.
Once you can buy a BS and start doing L4's efficiently, the amount of ISK you start bringing in just SKYROCKETS.
BS give anywhere from 500k to 3m per kill in empire space L4 missions. Thats a Whole L3 mission in one kill. The high paying L3 missions to boot.
And, there are a lot of L4 missions that are filled with tons of Serpentis BS just sitting there waiting to die.
Getting a BS and efficiently working through L4's is like the greatest turning point for a new pilot. You could spend months and months on L3 missions and have nothing to show for it. A week of L4 missions and you ca buy everything you need, twice over.

The galaxy is truly awe inspiring. The graphics are unbelieveable ...
This is the double edged sword EVE is dealing with now and in the immediate future.
They are pushing graphics enhancements out faster than fixes to gameplay (which hardcore vets are tired of waiting for). On top of that, the vets can't use multiple clients with Incarna because of these graphics enhancements (i.e. Captain's Quarters). This is seriously affecting their gameplay. The game is a blast for you but not for some of the vets anymore.
On top of that, the hangar ship view was removed and now you're forced to see your avatar (or a splash screen door) which further erodes the sense of immersion. You wouldn't get out of your pod/ship every time you need to pick up a little ammo. Vets liked the old hangar view and were expecting CQ to be optional, but it isn't.
On top of that, CQ being non-optional has caused vets to question if non-vanity, game-play-effecting items will be sold in the future, which will further erode their enjoyment of the game.
Remember, the pretty graphics don't matter as much when you're out in deep space in the throes of PVP. And that's what the vets are here for.
But I'm with you. There isn't a better MMO out there that can compete with EVE when it comes to complex, immersive gamplay and beautiful graphics.
Unfortunately, CCP is alienating some members of their playerbase on their way to acheiving their vision of that complex, immersive and beautiful game.
We'll see if they can bring them back and/or attract new players enough to increase their subscriptions, which in the end, is what it's all about.

I understand your frustration, as I have seen it in other MMO's before. Keeping the players informed is huge in maintaining a relationship with the players. I really hope that CCP understands the errors they have made. I also understand that one day when I am fighting to hold or take null sec space the graphics and the CQ are going to be way down my list of priorities, to say the least.
Keep fighting the good fight!

I have an opposite view.
You can go far with just guts. There are a lot of players who have far more skills who cannot fly their ships and will run from a fight against a determined pilot.
If you just jump in and take your lumps early, you'll probably find that you can handle yourself far sooner than if you wait until you think you're ready.
Also, Eve University will give you classes if you want a solid grounding in the basics.
Finally, I've heard Eve described as "Chat with a lot of features." I think that's accurate. Find a good corp early and it can make or break the experience for you.
Good luck.
