So, I have been reading through posts off and on for the past week and have other reasons for disliking Incarna.
But, from a gameplay perspective, there is a very serious issue with the current state of capsuleers post-Incarna: they exit their pods every single time they dock.
The argument was made in a previous post about the decanting process and how uncomfortable it is for capsuleers to be placed in and taken out of their pod, but this post isn't about that particular aspect. It's about one of the core principles of EVE, capsuleers, and why pod pilots are feared and respected throughout the universe: immortality.
As the story goes, when a pod is about to be destroyed, it burst transmits everything in your brain to your waiting clone. That is how pod pilots never die; that is how we live forever.
As I read in a post a few minutes ago, someone said it would be great if they could buy a gun and shoot other pilots. And, while I'm certain that CCP won't allow wandering NPCs to attack and kill a player in a station, and I do hope that an internet spaceship game won't also add an element of FPS/hide-and-seek station ganking, from an immersion perspective, it is a great concern.
Would a member of the Caldari militia really want to leave his pod while in a Gallente-controlled station in low sec?
What about an Amarr pilot in any Minmatar station, where all Amarr are hated for their years upon years of subjugating and mistreating the Minmatar (from their perspective)?
Why would someone willingly risk immortality every time they dock when it only takes one well-placed bullet to end your existence?
I wouldn't. I don't want to leave my pod. Plus, it's pretty comfy in there.

While a POD pilot is effectivly immortal in his/her POD, You are still HUMAN. Almost like the Norse Gods - they are immortal, as long as they eat those golden apples. Stop eating apples, they aint immortal anymore. You are immortal, only in your POD, but you are still human and as such you have HUMAN needs like:
Sex - cant have real sex in a pod Eat - cant eat REAL food in a POD Sleep - cant sleep in a real bed in a POD Mingle - can't properly foster friendships/relationships in a POD or hang out with the boys and drink a beer in a POD Family - assuming the POD pilot has family, cant visit with family in a POD

You aren't that much safer in a pod...there was a chronicle that described some girl that was assassination by having her body liquefied by some electronic signal. The result was this eerie mix of crimson pod goo...
she was never cloned...

Such is the life of those that choose to walk among the stars as immortals. Capsuleers aren't like ordinary people. We have no families, we have no countries. Our primary allegiance is to ourselves, secondary to our corporations. A Caldari-born pilot can join the Gallente militia and participate in the wanton slaughter of other Caldari and their Amarr allies. Things that normal people do are not always the same things that we happy immortals choose for ourselves.
My question is: why are we now forced to risk our chosen and, in quite a few cases, long-struggled-for immortality every time we stop at a station?
You may be willing to trade your immortal existence for the taste of a steak dinner and the warmth of another person's legs wrapped around your waist, but I prefer the burst of lights as a battleship explodes in the cold emptiness of space, thousands of screams swallowed by the vacuum and the only companion for those doomed souls being cold, dark, uncaring, empty space.
After all, outside of your ship, outside of your pod, a single person with even the slightest perceived grudge can end your existence. And, it happens quite often, according to the wonderfully written EVE Chronicles.

Edited by: Aramatheia on 29/06/2011 02:45:52 while im overall not a booming fan of the CQ itself, theres a valid counter argument..
What are all these stations? are they great big mcdonalds drive throughs where you dont ever need to actually go inside? while staying in your ship sure makes sense if your just stopping in having some hull work done, ammos reloaded and cargo extracted.
But if your making sensative deals like corp stuff or mission briefings... you relly want to just blast that out over the radio in a universe of ecm/eccm hacking and electronic warfare? So on that point even (especially) on RP terms getting out of the ship and meeting someone on the station makes sense
So i guess the moral to my post is the CQ should be a second step after docking into the station hangar itself. That way it doesnt need to be perma off, but it needs to be activated to zone into via a random unpod, lemme out button

I don't get it. How does this make more money for CCP?

I think they should rework the EVE story as its pretty ****ty. WE all look like nu metal vampires now and theres the whole walking in stations thing so lets just say we are not in pods and we are captains of ships and we have implants that does the same things the pods did. I ****ing hate the whole pod thing...I mean was CCP high when they made it up?

the pod does not really make one immortal, its just there is no gameplay reason to jam the cloning signal but id bet its allowed in EVE's lore for an enemy to jam the signal from the brain scanner.

Well it certainly looks like you went out of your way to make yourself look like a "nu metal vampire" :P

Buy your way into the clone storage area. Cut off the waiting clone's arms and legs. Pod the victim. How do you like your immortality, now!
Unless I'm misssing something, your immortality depends on various people making sure there is a functionnal clone waiting for you. That's probably a lot more unsafe than risking getting stabbed in the face while taking a walk around in the station.

True, but you can't see 20 camera drones all at once in your dreams

What? Didn't you see the Pod goo is yellow. There is a froth on the top too ya know. Pod Goo is BEER! sheesh

She's going to die before your eyes and your children will become old and perish too, so I'm not sure where you are going with this.

I strongly agree you shouldn't leave your ship automatically when you dock. You should go to the old ship view with an "enter station" button that takes you to your quarters.

its not very comfy when you have to really go to the toilet. these pods are cramped and lack certain comforts. idk what your talking about i certainly want to get out of it and often.
what i really would have preferred though was not walking in station but walking in ship. if anyone here played SWG and can remember out luxury yachts? i would have loved to see walking in our own personal ships first...with the ability to decorate / modify the interiors.
i think this would have been a better first step to walking in stations and maybe, eventually walking on planets.
