I would appreciate some advice on my next ship. I have been running a Myrmidon for many months, doing really well on level 3 missions. I now have enough standing to do level 4s, with the prospect of earning more isk. Only trouble is, the Myrmidon wasn't up to it and I lost it on my first attempt at level 4.
Can the wise and wonderful of Eve give me some advice on my next ship? I don't have a lot of isk (less than 100m) so any recommendations need to bear that in mind. I'm also very much a Gallente pilot so other faction ships wouldn't work for me.
Please help, all advice is welcome.

Edited by: Geldar Wroontik on 26/06/2011 11:31:48 Given that you used a Myrmidon for L3s I'm going to guess your drone skills are reasonably good. With that in mind, and your budget, I'd say a Dominix would be the next step. The preeminent subcapital drone ship, it's a favourite for L4 missions.
The only problem is any attempts I've had at making up fits for them has ended in tears, so hopefully someone will come into the thread with a good Domi fit.
One thing though: it might be worth doing some more L3s so you can earn a bit more money, since fitting a Domi with what you have could run into bankrupting range. Particularly if you lose it. ---

Buy a domi, pick a fit from the thread below -- then run lvl3s with it until you can afford to replace it, THEN take it into lvl4s

So the domi looks like a great recommendation. I have a domi at the moment with a very similar fit to my (ex) Myrmidon but I've never found it to be any different, just a hell of a lot slower. But the thread mentions sentry drones, which I haven't come across before so I'm not clear about how they work.
I lost my Myrmidon by getting too close to the rats in order to get the agro before launching my drones and I couldn't get away in time before I was toast. Do the sentries work differently? Or do I have to have a huge tank to get close enough for the agro?
Your advice, as always is much appreciated.

Senry Guns Deploy from your Dominix into space where they become a Stationary Long Range Turret. They are high dmg and with Drone Tracking Links provide excellent range and Dmg. They are better then Heavy Drones do to not needing the long flight times able to switch and hit targets at multible ranges near instantly.
There Dmg can be modified with rigs and do to there long range stationary design can be scooped up instantly if attacked or you need to move. A link Augmentator is important since they can not fire past your Drone Attack Range. They come in all 4 Dmg Types, Guards for anything within 40-50km and outside that the racial Dmg type Drone.

I think he's missing the aggro mechanic.
To stop the rats shooting your drones, while your drones are in your drone bay shoot a rat thats not currently aggro'd. So you'll need a gun of some sort, even a civilian gun, but you'll want the extra damage from large guns eventually.
You'll want to train for sentries asap, as they'll be your main damage dealer.

Yep, I didn't understand the agro properly - I guess I can shoot from any distance so long as I can target the rat?

Yes. Some spawns in some level 4's only aggro when you shoot them, others if you shoot them or get to close. Silence the informant is a good example, the closest mercenary spawn in the second which is tackler and bs heavy and spawn right ontop of you. It will only aggro once you shoot on one of those ships. _________ EVE is like the "Fisherman's Friend" of MMOs. If it's too hard, you are too weak. |

Thanks Mama
It was Silence the informant that I was doing when I lost the Myrmidon - trying to get in close to get the agro, if I'd have had a shot from a distance the outcome might have been different! Anyway, lessons have be lerned and a sentry domi is on my shopping list, training has already commenced!

Edited by: Baneken on 26/06/2011 20:09:57 The usual high dps domi fit, I prefer 2xccc's over one extra drone rig since that way my rig is cap stable by turning off either repper or guns which I've found more handier for missions then 50 something extra dps. Also this isn't a newbie fit by any stretch of imagination, newbs should stick to traditional dual tanked domis until you have perfected your drone, gunnery and armour tanking skills, less grief that way.

What I haven't seen mentioned here in responses, is to gather info on your missions. For this, before accepting a mission check http://eve-survival.org They have good descriptions for missions and you'll know what to expect and what to shoot and what not. You will also learn from there to exchange resists and damage types.

Silence can be absolute murder, even for a dominix or navy domi, especially if you're trying to do it without a retank between pocket one and two.
The stock dominix for getting started on l4s:
4x Dual 250mm railguns 2x Drone Links
5x Cap Recharger II
2x Large Armor Repairer II 2x Mission-specific hardener A 2x Mission-specific hardener B Damage Control II
3x Large Capacitor Control Circuits
Drones to taste. 5x Garde II 5x Warden II 5x Hobgoblin II if you can do sentries, heavies and mediums and lights otherwise.
Hardeners can be N-Type or T2. I used bog standard T1 meta 0 hardeners for every single mission I've run on the dominix (dozens, if not hundreds) and never had a problem with them. There are a few missions where triple explosive single kinetic might be better than double-double, depending on how you pull aggro and drone skills etc.
Might actually cost under 100m at current market prices, depending on component availability. Isn't terribly thrilling for DPS, but it tanks like a champ and as such is a perfect platform to learn the ins and outs of l4s from. If you're just starting out, there's no such thing as too much tank. Once you know the missions, know the triggers, know the ship, have t2 everything-but-guns and all that jazz, then you can start toning down the tank and dialing up the gank.
I'd suggest starting with this fit and working your way up to Baneken's as your skills improve.
