Even if you dont plan on buying one
Because it has the same effect tourists have on local economies.
If there are enough tourists around to buy your loaf of bread for 3$, soon enough you dont want to sell it to the locals for the 0.50$ you used to sell it for.
If youd have a heart, and didnt strictly care only about money, youd still be selling that bread at 0.50 to the locals. Because you were still making a living back when you were selling at 1/6th of price.
Soon enough, the greedy bread vendor gets into this tunnel vision of what he can buy with his 3$ loafs of breads and you get...
The 60$ monocles

I personally think of it as, what, the 1.5 bil isk monocles.
For a useless glory item, not bad. Like owning a faction ship that can never be flown without risking immediate gankage ... only now, you can wear it whenever you like.
It's not required.
It provides no benefits at all to our ships.
It's indestructable.
And it absolutely does NOT require you to spend real life money to get it.
Plus, the high price actually DISCOURAGES players from spending money for it. The in-game rich and wealthy will sport them. The plebs will ***** about it costing too much.
Maybe I just look at this all from another angle, eh?

End of the day, it will come down to one thing.
If people buy it...
your point is correct, one sided correct though, as if no one bought the bread, the price would be dropped.
If no one buys this stuff in game, the price will drop... it will however stay if people buy it... it is in the hands of the players
however with the massive high price (IMO) even if they drop it now they have given alot of people a bitter taste over it...

So whats your basically saying is that CCP are pushing for a Class system in eve. Rich / Poor. More importantly... they want to give the rich plebs a way to show it off
I like it. :)

At least faction ships do something
And its generally known in any RMT active game, that low priced vanity items sell a lot better then outragiously high ones. CCP is shooting themselves in the foot here. If they lowered they price by half, it could easily sell 4 times more quickly. --------------------------------------------- Somewhere beyond happyness and sadness, I need to calculate what creates my own madness o/ |

Bear with me, this is deep ...
CCP doesn't WANT to make a ton of RL money off the vanity store? What if it's a way to pull plexes, which are being farmed by certain faceless korean/russian bots, out of the market?

Certainly bots will be vain enough to buy and wear those items. ________________________ CCP: Where fixing bugs is a luxury, not an obligation. |

Meh, sure they don't. The players buying isk, buying plexes with said isk, and generally distorting the plex concept, might care about 1.3bil monocles.

I agree that logically if you can't afford it you won't purchase it. But, what is truly wrong with MT in its current state is that CCP is now diverting significant developmental resources to serve a few high end customers by creating content that is largely inaccessible to many subscription paying customers while real features and fixes languish in a persistent 18 month or longer development cycle.
CCP could have easily made MT a success by including both expensive and inexpensive items. Granted, not everyone would still participate in MT no matter the circumstance. But at that point CCP could have separated the steadfast principled players from the rest of the playerbase. As it stands now, CCP has separated the few wealthy players from the rest of the playerbase giving everyone else a big FU.
If MT in its current state meets CCP's expectations then you can expect that more development resources will be thrown towards aspects that cater to the few willing to supply the cash.
Everyone needs to stop thinking about this purely from an affordability perspective and see the larger implications. It doesn't bode well for the future of the game.

First of all its not about isk. Isk is part of the game. This is about the real life price they are charging.
Second. The problem is one of trust and respect. There is no reason charge $60 for an in game cosmetic item other than hoping that we willl pay far far more than it is worth. I would be unhappy if any company with which I had a long time customer relationship with decided to set ubsurd prices on products with a market strategy based on "Maybe a few few people will be willing to pay for a new if we charge maginitudes more than its worth."
.

CCP has done this with other items for years. Tournament rewards. Original super-caps/dreads. Officer fit ships. Items intended for the wealthy.
I'm just happy for once the wealthy don't immediately get another huge in-game advantage

Edited by: Syphon Lodian on 22/06/2011 11:55:08 Because they are so damn expensive that not even rich tourists will buy them.
I can only see a handful of people buying stuff, then they will immediately regret it.
All joking aside, I was actually looking forward to AUR and the Noble Exchange. I figured, "Hey, since they're adding it, might as well try to like it, right?" Well, there is nothing to like. There is about (7?) items, and they all cost more than my real-life clothes that I am wearing now. The virtual monocle costs more than any pair of sunglasses I have in my house.
It needs to be cut at about 80% or more, and the inventory needs to be increased by about 200%. Obviously though, this is what CCP has planned all along, and the current model is only a showcase preview, clearly. Right.... right....... Right??!? ------------------------------------------------- Go pod yourself. |

Oh ya before the, it will not stop there. No it will not. You will all be crying over that pink prom dress only the wealthy can afford. And if that thought dose not stop u in your tracks-carry on, quite entertaining.

Mostly the high price just ensures that most players will ignore that product in the CCP store and that CCP will be the laughing stock of the MMO commnity for a while. It's sort of like trying to trade a product and having no clue about the going price of such products, so you mistakenly think that the only bad choice is to ask too little money for it. So you ask too much for it and make it clear to everyone how inept you are and how little knowledge you have about trading that product.

No, actually, we're not "crying over a monocle", we're concerned with the trend that has appeared with the overpriced 'Nob' Exchange. I think no one cares about the actual items, they just don't want to see the entire feature ruined because it remains overpriced, or the inventory scarce. ------------------------------------------------- Go pod yourself. |

Im pretty sure the 60$ price is a ploy to do this:
Here, we lowered the monocle to the very reasonable price of 15$. Thats SEVENTY FIVE PERCENT OFF. See how reasonable we can be?

it's is not a monocle. it's the idea of eve. i'm playing this for 5+ years. and now people that mad ethis great game are s***ing all over it. adding sims and wow features. mentioned games are not played by older people, but kids (under 15).
i'm just shocked by all this. i want option to not use incarna and keep my spinning ships when i'm in station.
all new features are just new ways for ccp to grab money from us...at least from those dumb nerds. nothing against nerds. just against dumb people.

They just need to get rid of the plex conversion and figure out a $/AUR amount that is reasonable by taking a look at some of the other games out there with microtransactions in place.
Believe it or not, SOE actually did pretty well with their microtransactions, the prices are pretty reasonable. $20 gets you almost 2 full sets of clothes... - [SERVICE] Corp Standings For POS anchoring |

So, pretty much exactly what your local Walmar/Costco/European substitute does every year with their major electronics, like TV's. Sure, but most of the year its' $900.00, but that one day after thanksgiving it goes down to $600 ... and there's no way they aren't still making 30% profit margins.

The only fukin way, that I will ever pay $60 on a virtual monocle IS!
1). It enhances my already well equipped manhood by another 12", and gives it two independent heads!
2). It updates my real eyes with termographic, infra red, telescopic x-ray vision, so that I can see through ladies clothes from a mile away.
3). Or it virtually allows me to pick the winning lottery numbers in rl.
Seriously highly unrealistic addition to the game, those items actually cost more than I'd be willing to pay in rl for clothes! Ummmm let me see, 8 cans of beer or a pair of virtual boots for my eve avatar?
CCP you just lost a **** load of credibility from me! Let's face its against the terms and conditions to sell in game items or characters for rl cash, and yet the direction you've chosen to take now! Is that players can use rl cash to buy ingame items? Which I'm pretty sure will not just be limited to clothing in the upcoming future!
What next? Rl money required for the upkeed of my cq, electricity/gas bills? Hell why not implement an Eve gas station so we have to fill are ships with $6 a gallons worth of fuel?
