Running through some Craig's List looking for something interesting in a telecommute project and I find...
3D modeler needed for Game Developer
Figuring that this could be interesting to read because if you've got a need for 3D modelers then there might be a need for a 3D coder right? .... Ummmm .... take a look at some of them links.

Though to be fair, CCP have what - 600 employees? I'd be amazed if the team behind your link has more than 3, and none of them full time. |

1. You don't need hundreds of developers to not make a bad UI.
2. If Eve Online at as bad a UI as that at a similar stage of development then that just proves my point.
3. Case in point the Corporation Wallet Transaction window is totally FUBAR'd. If you select "Buy" transactions it lists things in **ascending** datetime order and won't change it for anything.
All I can add at this point: What to do when Eve f-s up |

All I have to add is this from the posting:

It's pretty amusing until you realize this isn't even competition for Eve (and no not in the sense that it looks like garbage).
This is an IOS game in development. It's certainly nothing to behold, but you can't be to hard on them considering that. It also explains that UI. Then again it's taken them two years to get this far and none of their ideas are really original.... |

Software work pays my bills so I have some experience in this realm.
UI design is not easy. I have observed that it takes a kind of talent to design good UI. A UI designed by software engineers will suck most of the time. It's not a matter of "dumbing down" but actually getting the smart out. That's what truly good UI design is all about. The more complex the program, the better the UI needs to be.
I predict that as programs become more complex - the systems on which they run becoming more capable of numerous features - getting access to the functionality becomes a greater challenge. UI design will therefore become a career field in itself, like an interior decorator career, or architecture.
One thing that is necessary is to get the programmers who design the UI to resist the urge to kill the marketers who will, without a doubt, complain about complicated UIs as the goal of marketers is to sell to the lowest common denominator (meaning "stupid people"). A separate UI designer field will take the heat off programmers.
In the end, UI design will have to be something the people will need to be trained on, much like good website design. There's a lot of code out there, and a lot of people who can write code (even I can write code when not smacking things with rifle butts), but not a lot of people who can put together a good UI.
Kudos to anyone out there who goes forth trying to push UI design as a profession. I won't attempt it. I suck at it. |
