Why run modern spamfare when there is CoD World at War?

I plan to do this actually, just need to pick the right game for it and I'm spending all my game research time trying to pick an EVE ship I like best, for now. I'm going to look into the red faction games first. They had very simple shooter mechanics and neat levels/buildings. I may try to make a server that only uses their guns and smaller explosives for some nice shoot outs. Maybe lower health a bit. But lots to think about there, certainly not 'the plan' right now or anything. CoD is certainly worthwhile without some of the spec gear. If people can make NO JUMP servers and other bull**** 'tactical' realism with blatantly who blatantly abuse and play favorites with the rules and still pull constant packed games then who knows? Maybe people would play my guns only server.

I wasn't going to buy it anyway, but good to know I'm extra justified.
Are you complaining that people just dont "suppress" themselves in video games? Well no **** it's a video game! Ever had an MG firing at you? Well part of it are the sounds coming coming at you in the form of zings and ricochets, and part is hearing your heart in your throat.
I mean really what the hell do you expect seeing as it's a video game...Even the HC ones people dont really suppress themselves. They either sprint or they drop then stand up in second or two and try and shoot you back. No one stays down and crawls for hundreds of yards.
I think you just need to move on to ARMA2/3 and project reality for BF2. If you dont want HUDS those games give you the tools. Be warned though because those games will force you to say get a heading, and check a map to find out where the hell you are.(Having done this in real life I can tell you It's a PITA. In a game it's a pain too.) And be ready to be picked off by snipers at 800m and never know where they are or have a chance in hell of finding them.
Either that or play counter strike source and run your own server, and make it an objective map so people dont just camp.

Three guns dont jam in game because well that's just annoying. What mechanic would create a jam? Dirty? How does one code dirty? Semi dirty or just...dusty? Furthermore even if a gun is dirty it might not jam...If it's clean it still might. How does that ruin immersion for you unless you've first hand knowledge. I do can't say say it impacts my game play one bit.
I do agree with the tags in games...BFBC2 you could play HC mode got rid of them... However how some graphics are it's needed, and I chalk it up to your buddy calling out a direction and near xyz point as in RL.
Then again we all got our annoyances.
This one WILL jam, even if its clean. Depart, clean, assemble, load, pull trigger - after 2 magazines in full-auto we always were betting on the outcome - how long until it jams. Even with maneuver-ammo. Because it is a crappy piece of lego metal, thats why.
This one Will not jam, BUT: I dare you to try shooting it in full-auto and try to hit a wall 5m in front of you.
Machinegun
Will jam if the ammunition belt is poorly stuffed.
What i am trying to say is: Weapons are sensitive tools. And if i see some guys running around and shooting 100+ rounds in a minute, without cooling, all in full-auto. Yeaaaaaah. Ok, Rambo can do it. But he should stay the only one who can do it!
(edit) Someone remembers DIE BY THE SWORD ? I'd like a game like this again Multiplayer with mouse-controlled melee weapons and detachable limbs would be fun.
This even more then my post about jams. Some weapons can be helped, others are a lost cause.

My point about jamming was... How do you code it into a game?
Do you add a random mechanic? and decrease the chance for guns like a 416? Or Do you somehow code in dirty...muddy...humid...dusty...player keeping the barrel clear...player keeping the breach clear... magazines first rounds are dirty (if so how?)...Heat of the barrel...Ambient temperature.
Those are just off the top of my head, and me not wanting to type in more. Sure you could just add a random mechanic, but that would just **** a lot of people off, and in the end do just what people hate... take away immersion as it's now just a random mechanic rather than based upon player actions.

You're somewhat correct. Jamming shouldn't be part of fps gameplay unless it's an mmo where you can fail to maintain your weapon.

Kinda like that idea... Though you see it in other fantasy MMO's, and it is essentially a death penalty. And in other games just a tradition rather than a mechanic with meaning.

A good shooter? Well, I recommend Battlefield Bad Company 2. IMO the best out there. Mainly because I immensely enjoy the environment destruction (makes other shooters look blah), which leaves me excited for BF3.
I heard arma II is pretty good, I do own it, but never really got around to play it much because I don't know anyone to play with. ----------------------------------- Peace through power! |

In the bathtub of mess that is the FPS market there have been a few good titles.
Unreal Tournament (original) + instagib mutator was and still is the best FPS ever. Counter strike 1.6 comes in a close second. Counter Strike Source before Valve completely ruined everything. Delta Force Task Force Dagger BFBC2 (Multiplayer as long as its on the PC, tried the console version and it was pretty shocking, probably the only newish FPS i enjoyed)
The whole child invested COD series is an absolute disgrace. Most single player parts of modern FPS's are appalling.
In the singleplayer market I did like Portal 1 and 2, also every Half-life except that Valve are dragging out the episodic gaming quite a bit.
Crysis was good for a "wow this is beautiful" and was a great achievement in graphics improvement but the story was lacking greatly.
I am looking forward to the new BF3 but I won't be surprised if it does not live up to the expectations.

64 players with destructible environments.... And now planes . People complaining about lack of realism yet dont complain that more games dont have destructible environments... What is less realistic than a building not having a whole in it when an Apache fires a missile? Or someone planting c4 in it?

I kinda hope for BF3 they do a mappack with the old bf2 maps, would be nice to see how they stand up with destructable scenery.

Jamming happens all the time, well to some of us. Me I chalk down all those kills I allow due to me pressing the wrong button for switching weapons down to jamming.
My hands sometimes drift also I got this compulsive reloading issue I'm working on.

Aw, come on, I remember "sniper" being my absolutely totally favourite mode of play, especially on open maps (mostly terrain, almost no buildings). I remember making kills from over 1km away, and on average at least 1 out of 3 shots being killshots. If somebody didn't keep moving, or if he kept moving linearly, he was as good as dead meat. The trick was finding a vantage point that wasn't THAT obvious so other snipers could easily figure out where you are (we played with tracers disabled), and leading your shots properly. Heck, I even loved being an anti-sniper sniper - the bad snipers picked rather obvious spots, and with a bit of patience you could tell where they were (yes, even without the "tracer trails"), and thanks to gravity, when they THOUGHT they were safe due to being just behind a small mound of dirt to obscure direct vision to my position, BAM! bullet impact from a long distance at an angle they didn't expect.
Hah. That's the thing about snipers in that game, they weren't camouflaged at all. I didn't need a scope or anything to find them, they turned up a distinctly different hue than the background ALWAYS so I could just roflstomp them with the saw. It was always painfully obvious to me where a sniper was sitting, and I would always run around like I was playing quake 3 or something and succeed. I honestly don't know how you were successful with a sniper rifle in that game, that's incredibly surprising to me considering how many snipers I killed with barely any effort.
On smaller levels, I suppose you have a point. There snipers were gimped something fierce. But on levels where you would need several minutes to get to a good vantage point (because you had to walk so gorram much), levels where even through a sniper rifle the enemy wasn't much more than a handful of pixels, I find it difficult to believe you would have had so much success with a SAW. Afterall, it wasn't all that accurate even at mid-range, let alone the extreme ranges you could get with a sniper rifle. Sure, if you emptied half a magazine in the general area you might get a lucky shot and kill me, but other than that, I could have more than a minute to line up the perfect shot before you could even get near enough to have any chance of an aimed shot. _

You forgot one: Tribes 2 with Anarchy Mod.
That game was the canine's testes. FPS action, classes, vehicles and base building all in one; 64 players running at acceptable speeds on a server, despite using dial-up at the time... Pure gold.
