Originally by: Sister Virgin A DOS or Denial of Service attack (most commonly done with a ping flood) is most often completely different than a hacking attempt to breach a database.
Why CCP suddenly took credit for making sure credit card data was safe makes no sense, as someone attempting to obtain files would not call attention to themselves with something as stupid and simple as a DOS attack.
Two COMPLETELY different things.
It sounds like CCP has ****ed someone off big time whom is retaliating by flooding the servers. And CCP to pull some smoke and mirrors has used that to their advantage to try to make themselves look like heros.
Some people are not THAT stupid.... Sigh....
Oh and some advice to CCP. Seek some advice and do some research about how eBay and Amazon prevent this. I suspect you can just make your servers ignore pings. That simple. (I hope)
To players; Until CCP does that, I predict they could be down for days until law enforcement can intervene.
Sucks, I wanted to play today.
Cheers

It sounds to me like you might be someone worth looking into... Yes, DOS attacks are feeble and lame, and probably no real reason to go pulling everything off line; but CCP did the right thing here, and if you don't agree with that, again I question your motivations with regard to the security of the EVE Universe. Until the source of the attacks and their full nature can be assertained, the right thing to do is terminate service; and I would have done exactly the same. CCP does have a legal responsibility to protect the security of their client's data, and some people take said responsibility quite seriously. Instead of coming here to demonstrate what is I'm sure your overwhelming technical knowledge (someone needed an ego boost), and to put CCP down; maybe you should use all your skill with the box to find these LulzSec arses and expose them to the world? I, for one, would be very grateful.

All brown nosing and fluffy congrats aside. What is CCP going to do about the, in my opinion, mistake in partnering with an evil corporation like sony?
You think LulzSec is going to just go away, this is going to be a recurring event, due to that decision.
Is it possible that DUST 514 could be moved to XBOX or even better, PC?

How about you "duck". I know nothing about ip and those things but i figured a whole lot of zombies are tossing exactly -there-. CCP sidesteps and a whole lot of zombies run headfirst into a wall only to get up and try again.
Might not work but at least it's funny.

and I think moaning too loudly about a half a day down-time is sillly.. it's a a recreational site, no serious business related service and some occasional downtime is expectable just like you'd expect your utilities to be interupted occasionally in a storm etc.
Shutting down for security precautions after an attack from a group that seriously compromised Citibank is definitely reasonable. How amateur of a mistake or how preventable might be material to your respect for the technical prowess for the company but given the group, the context and the response it is definitely not an example of poor treatment of consumers. (the new forums was a doozy of an amateur blow it because even I as an amaeteur knew that including a unhashed identification number in a URL is something any begining web developer should know about.... if something like that surfaces and it compromised customer data..well then i'd change my tune)

Can you imaging how the WoW kiddies would have reacted? Did you see the YouTube video of that kid whose mom shut off his WoW account??!! Hilarious - and disturbingly sad...

I actually laughed pretty hard when i read this... Because i just recently left WoW to play EVE myself, and one of the reasons i was sick of WoW (aside from cataclysm just being a bad expansion) is the general lack of maturity in the game, something that i find is far less prominent on EVE. In fact less then a month after i downloaded my 14 day trial my brother cancelled his WoW subscription and followed me here.

I'd luv to see them hang, a la ****** Hussian style viral videos
Your Joking? language filter blocks Sa_ddam!
Hi, Well it is hard for anyone to pursue this because this was a focused attack from a large amount of computers, (your computer can be one of the computers helping in the DDoS, you just don't know it) so it is very hard for CCP to block the ip's or do anything whit the info that they got. LulzSec have some sort of bot in alot of computers (like yours) that helps to bring up the collective networkpower that they need to attack Loginservers and other services whit DDoS. Really smart of LulzSec:P
But don't do it agains EVE, just **** on the US government and Sony.

Hope for all of you that it's a regular DDoS attack and not a hybrid mass-brute-force-login attempt. Think that would also cause traffic to flood and look like a regular DDoS so a question from me at CCP is were there massive login attempts? Or is the answer 'according to our logs everything is fine'?
My password is changed...

CCP are going to implement a scheme where people are not allowed to use the internet if they are going to do mean things. This is well within their powers and a perfectly reasonable thing to expect of them
Said plans and changes will be available for under 100 Aurum in the money store.
Thank you for the quick response and for protecting your customers!

Edited by: NoobPwn on 15/06/2011 00:48:50 It is not necessary to take down everything when being DDOSed, there may be some argue here, but anyway, are you gonna do it every time somebody DDOS the server? And where is the reimburishment plan of this incident?

ping flood, syn flood, bot flood whatever. There are several types of dDos's and as phreaker you know there are several strategies available to reach your goal.
One of them is called "distraction".
They're not heroes. They took the appropriate measures.
"Seek some advice and do some research about how eBay and Amazon prevent this." Please learn more about persistent environments, client-server connections in a both stateless and statefull persistent environments. Not even Amazon or Ebay are invulnerable. If you somehow think they are, you are not a REAL hacker.

made free calls by whistling down phone lines to mimic the tones used to instruct the automated exchange system, often using free whistles given out in a brand of cereal. and all that happened about 20+ yrs before I was born... so us kids aren't as clueless as you think ;-)

To all of the people who are commending CCP on their "better safe than sorry" approach. And others who are claiming that our information is safe as far as CCP has told us let me clear something up.
When Sony was hacked, their initial response was to downplay it for several days, not telling people the extent of the damage. In otherwords, all seemed right at the begining.
The second thing is, if we're able to log in to post comments, the same servers which hold our credit card information are also online.
Don't count yourselves lucky, just yet. Until CCP knows what exactly has been done, they're going to say as nice of words as they can. "We shut down to prevent damage, to protect you, to protect the servers". This is all they can say at this point.
Not to be a doomsayer, only that it's kind of silly to be all "yay, the danger is over, CCP saved us" when in fact there's no way of knowing, yet.
-Caid.
