Originally by: J Random Yawn, this reminds me of IRC disco/split/node wars in the 90's back when the were just DoS's. What's funny is you can tell the amount of kids on Eve in the way folk are reacting to the DDoS, like it's a new problem or the world will end or what's happening is new / novel / etc. The don't remember the DoS's in the early 90's or significantly bigger events that took down most of the internet (remember blaster? how about with alternic DNS poisoned the root, etc).
I do wish when this was all said and done CCP would release a technical AAR. Curious what the sustained bandwidth rates were and edge pps drop rates (if any). I.e. curious the problem was CCP (DDoS exceeded their burst capacity and/or the cost wasn't worth it because sustainment at burst levels) or if they actually managed to exceed CCP's ILEC or tier 2 / 3 provider. Also curious if the DDoS was layer 7 related (i.e. the routers kept up fine, it was the proxies/fw/iP|Ds/etc which failed)

*lol* noob. (sorry xD)
Sometimes it only involved a browser and a malfunctioning server/CGI combination ...*cough*

1) Please do enlighten me why it is practical to differentiate the two terms.
2) Again, dictionaries list them with similar/equal meaning. Languages evolve; the meaning of words change. If you choose to continue to use them with the meaning they had way back when, that's your choice, but it doesn't make it anymore right. Calling people who follow evolving language's progression for "sheep" certainly doesn't make you more right.
3) Why do you insist on capitalizing "hacker" and "cracker"? They're not proper nouns.
4) "Sheeplessly"? Sheepishly, maybe?

4) Yes, meant sheepishly ... language barrier, thx. :)
3) I'm probably used to it, because i'm native german speaking. But not from germany.
2) Yes, languages evolve and i'm not argueing about that. What's wrong here is that the media made this happen because they don't care. People don't care either or are just too dumb to inform themselves ... which makes it worse.
1) Easy. When i tell you i was a semi-famous hacker within my group back in the early 90s and you know the difference, you'll ask me about what i did and so on. When you don't know the difference, you'll think of me as a criminal, which should be put into jail.
Hackers get criminalized, altough Crackers are the criminals.
For further reference, think about Chaos Computer Club.
That's my point. (sorry for the language barrier...)

Now is a good time to train that 30 day skill. Its a shame that there are people who just want to cause havok. They may be after CCP and other companies for whatever reason, but taking it out on everyone else is not the way (translation: terrorist). When they get caught it would be nice to see them get taken out Bin Laden style.

These guys are no terrorists. That's sheepish mediaspeek. They do not cause anyone any physical harm and definitly no terror !
Are you US-American ? (no insult, a serious question so i can think about why you're wording them that way)
(also ... you suck for wishing some guys, who didn't kill anybody, death! think about it. please!)

Fair enough. It just puts me off a bit when reading through.

What I was getting at was that differentiating hacker and cracker is a bit like calling some programming languages scripting languages and others simply programming languages. Neither can be clearly defined from the other, and using different ill-defined terms leads to more confusion than it solves.

My point was that the difference is something you can understand from context. Hacker really always was a diffuse term, as it was used both as slang for a programmer and a person who enjoys exploring the details of programmable systems and stretching their capabilities[...], thus bordering into what cracker was used for. The only real defining document of what hacker meant was the infamous Jargon File, where it also was ill-defined and unclear. Therefore I argue that sticking to separating the terms come hell and high water is impractical. The only thing that has changed imho, is that the word have been clearly defined.

The argument about the context is a good one, but many people are ignoring any context ...
Anyway ... I understand your point, but there's no time for it right now... sadly, tbh.

I agree and right now CCP is doing the right thing, taking everything offline will just give LulzSec what they want. How ever I do expect some form of compensation from CCP when all this is over and done with.

Mate, all your credit card infoamtion will be stored seperate to the eve servers, they'll make sure of this.
2nd, all your credit card details WILL be encypted, the hackers can get hold of this, but there is 99.9999 percent chance they'll not be able to decrepit the code
Dont worry, CCP are a strong company and will deal with it, period

They are Crackers, not Hackers.
Also, i believe that the DDoS is used to distract, while somebody is trying to enter the system. Any information about that would be appreciated, altough we'd probably find out anyway......
It's a wild guess and i admit i'm not up2date with todays security measures, but that's the reason for my panicking....
Turning everything off at least prevents everybody from getting in.
Also ... why should they do it again, if not for a specific reason ...

And IF these skriptkiddies gain entrance to the server with the nececcary information, the normal way of storing passwords etc is via Hash, you can get the clear passwords with rainbowtables. And most people juse laughable passwords making this even easyer.
That said, the current attack is supposed to be a DDOS to disrupt service and **** us off, not one to gain entrance.

Sony, Codemasters, Citbank and Acr showed us that companies give a **** about It security.
