Not sure exactly HOW Google's metrics work, but I have to wonder if - in the end - CCP is using some of my subscription money to advertise EVE online to me on well over half of the webpages I visit - practically EVERY 'ads by google' frame is filled with an EVE advertisement... but of course, I already play EVE, and pay for it... so why is that money being used to bother me further?
Anyone else get a LOT of EVE ads as they're surfing around? Any comment from CCP marketing guys?

Ya - cause you should get a refund, or dictate/complain about every company that you see an advertisement for that you have bought a product from.
Makes a lot of sense.
Seriously, when are they going to implement an iQ test to be able to post on these forums?

I think if google's metrics are hitting current eve players then they're most likely targeting the right crowd of people.
WoW players would most likely receive WoW adverts too since that would be their interests, no?
I think if google ads stopped advertising to you once you bought the game I'd be more concerned about privacy.

I think its actually down to your surfing history. Google adds thinks that EVE Online adverts is something you would be very interested in so they show you that.

Umm....as long as you don't click on the ad, it likely doesn't cost CCP a thing (usually GoogleAds are done on a pay-per-click model). ~Gnosis~ |

do the ads have a little eye shaped icon on them? if so you can click on it and opt out, then you'll get the usual interest rate and zwinki garbage
what happens is you visit a site and the banner ad can see where you go and display ads from places you usually frequent. I get the EVE banners everywhere too, I also go to B&H's site a lot so I get stalked by ads for the camera I can't afford on other sites.
but, yeah... the "eye" is the key to controlling what you see.

Apparently.

Because they don't know whether you're a subscriber or not, and you fit the profile of somebody who might want to play EVE. Statistically speaking, there are far more people that MIGHT enjoy EVE if they played it than people that already play EVE right now. It makes some sense to NOT bother about even trying to filter out current subscribers and just presenting the adds to anybody that fits the profile.

You haven't developed a mental filter for ads already ? There's also some software for that, if you can't willingly ignore them. _

Bingo... and who gives a ****?.. only people who don't get their news sources from trevor mcdonald or BBC.
Nice try at trying to get to the truth on this one, but as of the day you were born, your own parents signed a document akin to the birth certificate you get when boats are in their <birth from the waters> that is the sea.

Would you rather.. a) Have Google know who you are and what games you play? or b) Receive random adverts?
I block it all. If there is something to be worried about, it should be the doubleclick tracking that goes on when you log into secure.eveonline.com ----------- Never Forget the joy of finding a main to link to a scammer alt. N-y-p-h-u-r ! ! |

Yeah, Google's system is a bit screwy. I get nothing but play Eve ads since I do so much surfing at Eve sites. The only time it changed was while I was researching mini-vans... then I had three weeks of Dodge Caravan ads.

So THAT'S why I saw an EVE ad on Monster.com.
Was wondering why a company, all about finding a job, would advertise something that would completely deter someone from going out and doing just that.

Confirmed:
I play WoW and I do not get ads for WoW. I still get EVE ads. If not EVE then one of the myriad fail online WoW knock off ads.
Yeah, EVE is pretty hardcore on the advertising. Better that than Viagra ads.

what i find most odd is that i catch a lot of eve banner ads on the bulbapedia website. Pokemon is probably one of the more user friendly games out there, and eve online UI alone could kill someone, not even counting the sociopathic personalities that thrive on it.
it may also be that ccp is targeting younger players? i don't know what gettting subs from the average Pokemon player would do as the average pokemon player is between five and thirteen. people between those ages don't tend to react well to a combination of not keeping your stuff when you die, greifers, and complex UI. these three things eve is known for.
of course, Google may just be posting ads based on knowing ccp is targeting gamers, and bulbapedia is a site for a vidoe game, leading them to put up ads there. i say this because i find a lot of eve ads on other video game wikias.
and yes, the same ads do follow me around the internet, it seems.

I would like to say that I would PREFER it if they could to figure out a way to target people that don't already play eve, but like some others have pointed out, the alternative is low interest rates and viagra!
