He's talking about the "host" of it, not any individual player, and the total winnings value granted. Anything between 1/10 and 1/3 is possible, I guess (no idea how many special events or bonuses or whatever the heck incentive program he might use), but I doubt he keeps it all anyway, he must have tellers and various other costs. Still a lot of cash either way... 3 to 10 tril, nothing to be ashamed of. _

Depending on what the prize is he can make anything from 1m - 200m profit per blink. 30trillion isk has been handed out, so I think his made around 5trillion profit. After labour costs I think his made around 3trillion isk that actually belongs to him and whatever alts he has.

if you haven't noticed, he actually makes alot more than the official profit cut.
Blink is a very elaborate scam, just watch it for a while, you will see 2 - 4 pretty young players winning most of the blinks in one or two days, but not enough to show up in the ranking statistiks, and those characters are changed every few days.
It's not exactly a secret - but still tons of people fall for it.

Edited by: Andrev Nox on 01/05/2011 08:12:26 Apologies for the delay, Somer's out of town, and I just discovered the thread. :)

Since we're celebrating, I'll release some statistics we haven't publically given before. :)
In terms of ONLY promos, 1,336,650,543,223.72 ISK has been given away to date, and the average given away daily goes up as our customer base goes up. On the 24 hour span during which we hit 20T total given away, we promoed off about 50b worth of kit. For the 30T celebration day, it was 90b. We also have our biggest single-item free giveaway being announced in the next couple of days, during the tail end of the Guardian-Vexor bonk currently running.
In terms of free blink credit from achievements, 1,244,483,000,000 ISK to date. We also have quite a few new achievements (and new ways of getting achievements) on the near horizon to expand this number as well. :)
As far as we're aware, we're also the largest benefactor to donate to Eve Uni, we run a scholarship program for Agony U students who can't afford tuition, and we've been talking with RVB to support what they do. We also host several private PVP tourneys for alliances with high blink membership. I'm in the process of figuring out how to host similarly styled carebear tourneys for our highsec customer base :)
And, as mentioned, we do have internal costs to pay - there are currently 23 active staff members in Blink, in jobs ranging from freighting, to data entry, to prize construction/acquisition, to prize delivery.

Every now and again, someone sees someone else win a string and this type of post pops up. I'm always happy to address it, though :)
Sometimes, a person (or group of people) wins several in a row because they buy a larger number of tickets to a specific blink. "Buying better odds" essentially.
Sometimes, a person wins several in a row just due to sheer blind luck. There was even a guy who won 3 promos in one night (during the 20T celebration.)
But with over 315,687 prizes given away (not counting the 2,546 free promo giveaways discussed above), we'd need a LOOOOTTT of alts to perpetuate a scam on the scale you're suggesting :p
And, as many others have pointed out over the months, every legitimately closed blink nets us a bit of profit. We'd be terminally stupid to rig the system in any way, as it would be the one sure-fire way to kill our business forever.
Plus, if we really wanted to go that route, we could just have simple, public "house bets" where no-one wins. This is a normal practice in casinos, both virtual and otherwise, and is acceptable to most folks. We don't run Blink like that on purpose. It's just more fun if there's always at least one person celebrating when each Blink closes. :)
If you like, you're free to evaluate our method for choosing winners. The code we use to get the number is here. As you can see, we draw it from random.org. You can find their real-time statistics here and several peer-reviewed papers on the quality of their random-generator here.
Hope that helps :)
PS - Always blink on 7. We rigged 7 to win.

I've no doubt that Blinks make Somer (both personally and as a corp) ALOT of money, especially considering alot of prizes are turned into blink credit instead of being reclaimed. Plenty people probably kicking themselves that they didn't think of something like this sooner :P
But it's alot of fun too, promos and acheesements keep people playing. Plus the somer channel is an entertaining place to hang out. There are two sides to the EVE community; those that scream for change and those that scream against it. Often they are the same person. |

People will always miss the point. Blink isn't a scam in the traditional sense of the word .... it's much much worse. Look at the facts. It's largest winner ever was exposed as a huge RMT purchaser.
Now look at it's "celebration" bonk thing going on right now. You have a player on there with 22,000 bonks for the prize (that is 11 billion ISK!!!) with currently 97,000 total bonks which means this guys chances of winning the Guardian-Vexor/Utu are worse than 1 in 4. Now, I can understand someone wagering 50% of seats for a Nightmare and swallowing the loss with the odds but this is obvious (at least to me) no player no matter how rich, has the ISK to play that kind of ISK into those odds without something stinky going on in their wallet. Wake up and smell the RMT cleaning going on. Theirs is a policy of don't ask just collect which would make Blink and it's higher end employees (including Somerset Mahm) the largest passive promoter of RMT in the game.
You guys should add a new corp to your Alliance. Ponder on the name Cognitive RMT Laundry Services.
Maybe there should be a new part of the Cognitive Network

Its the same as real life lotteries or casinos. So its not exactly a scam, because you know exactly what is going on, but most people are stupid and think they will make profit by being lucky.

Well, let's look at Blink. A Raptor on there gets bought out at 10.8mil ISK. There are 8 tickets, selling at 2mil each. So, they effectively earn a nice chunk of profit on each sale. If I were to venture a guess, I'd say the net profit would've turned out around just under 5 trillion. After chopping it up between corp and salaries for the other employees, the profit to an individual would be pretty awesome, but definitely not as large as it might seem at face value. Especially if you think about the fact that the Blink website would need a fairly well-endowed server to host it.
The only scam involved in it is that people often sink far too much ISK into it. That's how they make money.
I tried it once and ended up walking away with 100mil extra ISK in my wallet. But I'm not so deluded as to think I can beat the odds and walk away ahead every time.

Don't fly what you cannot afford to lose - don't play with what you cannot afford to lose. It is a fun and not very efficient way to buy ships at slightly elevated prices, if you think about it. And you can get lucky.
Put some remaining Blink credit at a Enyo, one ticket. Didn't want the enyo, traded for Blink credit. Put it all on a Daredevil ticket for the fun of it. Won that one. Traded for ISK credit. Bet on a Cynabal. Won it - and have leftover cash.
Sure. You could go and buy the ships. But every GSC bought via their link is not more expensive than anywhere else and nets you 50 mil credit.

who cares if it is a scam anyway - not like people go there with the express goal to make serious isk or sth. most people i know just do it for fun or to pass the time while hauling/mining/ratting/waiting for stuff to pew.

11b isk isnt really a lot of isk...
just think of the recent engagements in geminate/vale where drf+rdn+pl have fielded way over a trillion isk in supercaps.
Anyone who've played this game for more than 2 years should have figured out how to make several billion isk in a relatively short timespan.
