I've just come back after a long break from eve and have lost my way a little. I've got 2.5 million skill points in missiles and am finding them really boring. Doing lvl 4's in my raven, the tank seems ok but the damage is not what i expected from cruise. On my level 3 hurricane i am getting more per volley with medium projectiles then i do with the cruise against BS's. I know there is a difference in the time between volleys, but the missiles just 'feel' weak.
with all the time i have invested in missiles, is it worth chipping away at it, or shall i switch to projectiles for pve? I'm almost skill trained for my nighthawk, but am going to have a think on what sort of weapons i want to use...

I would suggest getting a hold of a Tengu if you have the money for it. It's superior speed and ROF will clear missions much faster than most battleships.
The Hurricane is also a great ship as will as anything in the Minmatar line up.
The main issue with missiles is that they are boring. They are actually a lot better at PVE than projectiles (assuming you have good skills) but their sound and visual effects just make you want to go AFK. Projectiles on the other hand get satisfying results from nice sound effects and while a little lack-luster on visuals the amount of damage you see being dealt per volley is very satisfying.
The decision is up to you. I would suggest missiles but if you are really that bored you can always go to projectiles.
Another thing, you could also try AFK drone boating with a Dominix. Just grab agro and come back in 20 minutes. In the mean time you can be doing other things including playing with your alt.

Projectiles for PVE... The Mael makes a great missioning ship, but you'd need Minny BS to at least 4. Get it to 5 though and you have options on the Vargur or the Mach (for maximum effect). Both ships are vastly better than the Raven for PVE.
Alot of gunnery support skills to get to 4 or 5 though, and Large T2 projectiles take a while to get to. Sure pays off in the end though.

The good thing with those support skills is that they will be useful with lasers and hybrids too. Go forward T2's projectiles then lasers but forget hybrids, they just suck, it's a waste of time training for that. Get better drone skills or missiles, you'll never regret it like you will if you waste that time training for railsuxx

Your problem might be that your sp in missiles seems a little low. I don't even specialize in missiles and I have 3 million or so sp in it, which is a far cry from my gunnery skills at 8.5 million.
Do you have most of your support skills at 4/5? What about the actual caldari BS skill; at 4 or 3?
The other problem might be your raven setup. Are you using faction/T2 launchers(with cruise spec at 4) or arbalests? Faction or T2 BCS's (or God forbid T1 ones ~_~)? It might be helpful to post your fit.
I just find it surprising that you feel a 'cane is out-damaging a raven. Artillery might make it feel that way since the alpha is huge, but even then the raven should be hitting for more. If it's an auto 'cane I'll be REALLY surprised if you feel it's out-damaging your raven...

Get a machariel and projectile skills, it will beat any missile boat at missioning. . Adapt and overcome or become a monkey on an evolution poster.

Tengu or Machariel/Vargur - it doesn't really matter. T3 is more multipurpose, BS' have slightly better dps at close range.
