There's been some uncertainty about how drones set to aggressive works with regards to can flippers and or thieves.
I've found that having my light drones out and set to aggressive helps a lot while I'm mining, because they will auto-attack belt rats. Normally I can manually set them to attack the belt rats, when the rats show up, but with the recent ECM mechanics change, Guristas belt rats tend to perma-jam me.
So, that's the argument for drones out and aggressive.
But will they attack an ore thief? Different players give different answers. What's the current factual game-mechanical truth?

Not factual, but from the best of what I've observed, they will attack anyone who attacks you.

But does ore theft count as attack? That's the core of the question.

No. Or at least when I was can flipped with drones out they didn't attack. This was some time ago though so mechanics may have changed since.

But did you have your drones in aggressive mode, or in passive mode?

No they will not attack unless you are attacked. Can flipped will not agro your drones.

Seconded.
I've tested aggressive drones and theft. Aggressive drones will never attack a thief on their own.
There is a substantial ISK reward of 750 million available to anyone that can prove otherwise.

No drone setting (aggressive/passive) will attack ANYTING which is NOT BLINKY RED to you.
If a player is blinky red to you, assuming we are talking highsec, at this point he will feel the rage of CONCORD, if you did¦nt anything wrong, like taking YOUR ore back from HIS container.
Tau¦s millions sound tasty but with existing aggro and drone mechanics he will keep his iskies.
