Okay so the topic is a bit of a troll. I haven't actually bought anything. Yet.
However, I am considering. I do a lot of typing. The primary instrument of my income is a keyboard and I realized some time ago that I ought to perhaps upgrade my keyboard, currently a slim Logitech with backlit keys, to something more tactile. So I did some research and I find that there are, in fact, premium, professional keyboards that are ****ed over by programmers and enthusiasts.
I have narrowed it down to three totally geeky options:
Das Keyboard - This one uses cherry blue switches for the ultimate clickity clackness. Standard form factor. Built like a tank by Germans. May be capable of invading and defeating Poland.
Happy Hacking Professional2 - small form facter using Topre switches. Supposedly has the tactile feedback of cherry blues but with less sound.
FILCO Majestouch - uses brown cherry switches which are softer and quieter than blues.
All three are expensive as hell. But they last forever and provide for awesome, responsive typing.
I'm sure we have a good amount of coders and geeks in the Eve community and some of you have used these keyboards. So I'm wondering... anyone have any personal experience?

Not only that, the reviews for it are actually horrible.
Cool idea, terrible typing instrument.

This.
I got hold of one and it's like trying to type on a bunch of dinner plates. The keys are enormous, and it's terribly designed in terms of ergonomics.

I, too, will be buying a $300 keyboard. My friends all went "WTF?" when I told them, but it wasn't what they were expecting :)
299 Euro keyboard FTW
On another note, my current PC keyboard is a $10 Logitech one, works like a charm :) The only thing I fear, is running out of beer! |

Recently got myself Razer(Yeah, I know ) Black Widow. Blue switches, so its quite loud, but I enjoy the click and clack and its quite pleasant to type on, only cost 70ú or so. Now I struggle at work with non-mechanical keyboard though -------------------------------- No sig, is a sig as well. |

There is a ready market for keyboards that have a debris tray like toasters. I smoke so ash goes beneath the keys. If that could be collected in a removable tray it would be handy. And a keyboard that is washing machine proof (inside a pillow case) would be nice.

I got a G19 or whatever it is called from logitech. Its OK enough. But form what I heard people who type a lot is happy with Das Keyboard. No first hand expereince on it, I have just used logitech keyboards for the last 10 years. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I like my G15 quite a bit. I use it's screen as RSS reader, and it's pretty nice to the touch. I guess you can have better, but as I like my macros, I'd keep it anyway.

I've used a Das Keyboard (the Ultimate - no lettering) for a few years now. Wouldn't swap it for any other keyboard. Perfect key pressing action every time (except when I'm wasted)! However, it's not the quietest of actions, probably not appropriate for quiet environments like libraries and some offices.

Get this!
I have the advantage pro, but the standard one only costs $299, which is within your budget.
It's very comfortable
One downside though. The F-keys are crap.

Can you explain that? Because any 3 dollar keyboard does the same every time (maybe shorter lifespan, but considering the price difference that is not really relevant).
Anyway I use a cheap keyboard myself, but for just typing and general work I never heard anyone complain about the MS ergonomic keyboards and alot of praise for them (http://www.keyboardco.com/keyboard_images/microsoft_ergonomic_keyboard_4000_black_usb_large.jpg)
And you can buy 6 of them in your budget.

Hm, this will be hard to explain because most people never really pay attention to the tactile feedback of keyboards unless you point it out to them.
Also, part of it can be what you grew up on and how old you are. If you've ever used a classic IBM M-model keyboard then you know it is a world of difference from your standard keyboard of today. Mechanical keys simply feel better when you press them. You "know" you've pressed them. They feel substantial.
If you ever used an Apple II that is very similar to the feel of a Das Keyboard. Very clicky keys. When you grow up on a certain level of feedback the newer keyboards, most of which use rubber domes under the keys, just don't feel right.

Edited by: Jada Maroo on 11/04/2011 13:48:50 I ordered the Filco tenkeyless with brown Cherry switches. I came within seconds of ordering the red Cherry from the UK but did some last minute research and they seem kind of a fad. And I get the imrpession they won't quite give the level of feedback I'm looking for, which is blue but a bit quieter.
Maybe one day I'll get the Happy Hacking Pro. And maybe a Filco blue. So begins, eventually, the keyboard collection.
