I don't have any experience with tracking disruptors and i am trying to figure out a way to make them useful.
Assuming i use tracking speed script for the disruptor and fly a cruiser equipped with an afterburner orbiting within 5km. How many tracking disruptors would be necessary to render medium autocannons useless? I can fit at least 4 and intend the tactic for solo encounters.

Tracking disruptors are useful for tackle frigs and cruiser hulls that get a bonus to TD's. There are of course a few exceptions. Using four TD's is a little redundant though. Medium AC's track better than pulses and have much better range than blasters. Obviously, 425's would be more effected by a speed script as opposed to dual 180's, which track amazingly for medium guns.
If you're planning on taking a cruiser to kills other cruisers or BC's solo, make sure you're armor fit with as small a sig radius as possible. I don't know much about solo'ing with armor-fits, but I'm pretty sure you're going to need at least one web to keep your target still. Including the AB and scram, that's already three of your midslots filled. Exactly what cruiser were you intending to use?

Why not just use an Arbirator?

if you have a spare mid slot left that you don't necessarily need,
use one slot for a td and it works really well when fighting against a turret ship.
For example, if you usually fly with a double web, unless you really need two webs for that fit to work, fit a td.
Even with one td you can really feel the difference in incoming damage.
However, it only works when you are flying in small gangs.

i agree that you should just get an arbitrator and set it up like a cheap pilgrim. i say pilgrim and not curse, cause i've never tried a mwd fit arbitrator before, dunno how well it'd work (someone else could fill you in on that i guess)

not completely true iv known drake blobs to fit them to nasty effect. also inti's can fit them to allow tackle against more "dangerous" targets in the bigger fights (HAC's for example)

TDs against medium autos? ThatÆs a tough one. CanÆt give specific answer without specific datas. What would be your ship? Are well skilled in it? What is your target flying? How is it setup? etc etc. Im just gonna babble generic knowledge, then!
If your cruiser is bonused for those (aka Arbitrator & friends), youÆll want at least two well skilled TDs on target to enjoy a comfortable effect. Only one doesnÆt feel like itÆs enough somehow. Speaking from experience.
I prefer, by far, the optimal range script because tracking problems can be worked around in various ways (fly in formation, webs on target, painters etc) while missing range can only be worked around if your target has the luxury of controlling the distance to you. It will also entice him to load long ranged ammo, further reducing his DPS potential.
If you really want to fly under the barrels of medium ACs with a cruiser, I think youÆll need to maintain at least 450 m/s within 1,000 m. They are that good! Gotta nano up :(

Greetings:
When I fly in a frigate hull fleet (anywhere from a handful to two full squads), when a handful of us (typically 2 or more do) have TD's, we've taken down ships up to BC in size without losing a fleet member.
And TD with the optimal range script has the potential to make kite fighters chose whether they will close distance so they can hit you (this mainly applies to lasers btw), or just get out and call it a tie.
Thank you.
