Reduce the number of ships in system. Historically this is achieved best by linking smaller ships together to form larger ships, or even giant space robots.
Every race could have their own super robot but robots would vary based upon ship composition.

Perhaps the best way to reduce fleet lag is by reducing corp size to a maximum of 20 and alliance size to 5 corps. Even if everyone was online at the same time and available to fight it would ammount to no more than 200 ships. I think that would be the best way in my opinion as the secondary benefit would be that the huge monopolies are broken up and a more ballanced playing field would be available for all.

Why not drop everything down to 16-Bit graphics? That'll make the most epic battles fly at 60fps.

you'd just make 10 copies of the same alliance or the same corp and still bring as many people.

I dont think so. I think it would get too confusing in battle to tell friend from foe if people tried that. I'm sticking with the idea because I want to see some leverage that will open up lowsec for everyone and not just the old dogs and their well protected bots.

Null sec fleet battles are already a mix of different alliances on both sides. We already have "blue balls".

does 3vs3 count
I havn't been in one of the huge ones that people complain about lag in, no. My suggestion was aired with a view to help stop lag. Do you really think that alliances would bring in other alliances to help? I would have thought the logistics and communications would make it really difficult. However I'm eager to hear good reasons why my idea wouldn't work. I graft hard to buy plexes and something really really irritates me about huge corps protecting space so their bots can run 23.5/7.

Put aoe back in the game. Not old titan dd or sb bomb, real aoe that normal ships can use, thus there will be a lot of it. Bring back the aoe torps. People don't cause lag when they're popped and podded.
