i played eve about 5 years ago for about a year and really enjoyed it, but quit because at the time didn't want to be pay for two mmos (was also playing ffxi). i have since stopped playing ffxi and after a brief grind in wow came back to eve last month. the game seems much more approachable than what i remember with a lot of changes to the tutorial systems and introducing you to the unique systems that eve uses.
i really enjoyed the exploration parts of the tutorial so my current plan has been to train to fly a buzzard and do that. i have about another week before i'll have the skills necessary to fly it and about 10 weeks on top of that to get all the certificates for it. one of the things i've been concerned about has been that while the tutorial i never ran into enemies, it seems that won't be the case in a normal situation. my planned fittings for the buzzard don't include anything for taking down other ships. while i will be able to cloak, i'm pretty sure i won't be able to do hacking, salvaging, etc while cloaked. so is it best that i be doing these with other people? or should i have two ships, use the covert ops for scan, something else for taking down enemies at the sites, and then switch back to the covert ops for clean up?
i am not too interested in pvp, though i understand at times it will be unavoidable. i usually prefer support roles in group environments. most of my play time is done at work where i have a lot of free time, but might need to randomly go afk for a few minutes without notice. because of this i was expecting to do a lot of solo play. i'm wondering if i should be considering other career paths in eve if anyone has suggestions.

Like you, I enjoy exploration.
The skills you need to fly the buzzard and effectively use probes (both personal skills and character skills) lead well to being a scout for gangs and fleets.
Later, you may look at recon ships and be the covert cyno to hot drop a "covert fleet" on your enemies.

For PvE, you might start out in highsec, doing the exploration sites found there. Once you have better skills, look into doing C1/C2 wormholes (you can do these in an Arbitrator (amarr cruiser) without too much trouble). Medium/Long-term, you might look into joining a corp/alliance based in wormhole space, the ultimate extension of the "exploration" game (IMHO, ymmv).

If exploration and probing are your thing, then wormholes are where you want to be.
Combat probers for pvp are important too (guys who can scan down a ship asap).
In a buzzard or other covert cloak ship you'll be about as safe as you can be in space, with the ability to travel all of eve with near impunity.

Once you train for a Buzzard, train for a Caracal cruiser then a Drake. That will all you need to do most of the sites you are likely to find early on.
Scan sites with the Buzzard. Scout them to assess the difficulty: * mostly NPC frigates: use a frigate (until you can use something better) like a Kestrel. * A few NPC cruisers: use a cruiser (until you can use something better) like a Caracal. * A few NPC battlecruisers or lots of cruisers or a couple of battleships: use a battlecruiser (until you can use something better) like a Drake.
The Drake is a really forgiving ship. With a T2 setup, it can even handle level 4 missions (slowly, a Raven battleship is much better suited for those) and anything in a class 2 wormhole (class 3 anomolies too, but not radar/mag sites). It doesn't take very long to train to be competent in. I have battlecruisers level 2
After that, the Tengu is a really amazing albeit expensive cruiser. It is well suited for exploration in hostile lowsec and even nulsec. I live in a C5 w-space system, and it is our ship of choice. We clear C5 and C6 wormhole sites in a gang of about 8 remote rep Tengus.
Missions are good for earning ISK too. Level 1 can be done in a Kestrel. Level 2 a Caracal. Level 3 a Drake. Level 4 a Raven (possible in a Drake, done that myself, but very slow and inefficient). A Tengu can do any level 1-4 mission that doesn't restrict ship type (some level 1 missions don't allow strategic cruisers).

Hey. I think your bridge might be on fire. You better go under there and check to make sure everything is ok.

This is a PDF file. It isn't the best guide but it is a nice overview and a lot less overwhelming.
Decide what interest you and research it further.

For the Covert Ops Frigate, the answer is yes to both of those options. Yes, have one or two fleet members present or yes, change out ships after scanning for solo exploration.
The answer you're probably looking for to quickly do solo exploration is really a 3rd option.
Train up to fly either a T2 Force Recon Cruiser (high sec) or a T3 Strategic Cruiser (low sec). Both can fit up Cov Ops cloak as well as defensive and offensive modules along with the exploration modules. These ships can conduct exploration solo and complete the sites 'On the Fly' without having to refit, switch ships or rely on fleet members. For 0.0 (Null sec) exploration, a fleet should be used.
With the ever increasing amount of players doing exploration, the trick to being a good explorer is being able to quickly find and complete the sites asap.
Also knowing where to look helps a lot.
Good luck and welcome to Eve.

Thanks for all the great feedback. I was able to find a few ships could fit all the modules needed for exploration and still have offensive capabilities (Arbitrator and T2 variants). I also received a email from a recruiter representing a very unique corporation that seems like something I would enjoy.

Good for you. Also, the arby is an amazing ship. I flew one for years almost to the exclusion of other hulls prior to training into amarr battleships for fleet pvp.

I work at a public computer. I'm only busy if customers have problems and I have the lab computers running quite well so that isn't too often.
