Reading a number of threads about getting miners in to low sec and the problems with low sec. Their has been a number of threads about beefing up industrial ships offensive abilities to deter pirates by adding weapons. The problem I can see with this idea, is that you need a lot of fire power to kill the average pirate ship, this would make mining barges etc unbalanced for other activities.
Then the idea came to me for the perfect mining/industrial weapon. CCP to introduce new type of weapon that is fairly powerful, with low fitting requirements (so if can fit on barges and industrials) and can be mounted without the need for a turret or missile slot. It would be one shot weapons so cannot only fire once every 10 seconds after reloading and the ammo would be bulky and special but varied.
I can see ORE experimenting with magnetic or gravity based devices designed to fling ore towards a target, accelerate it sufficiently and you get a firing system. Give each ore different damage properties, load up say 500M3 of it into the gun and fire it at the pirate. Not much use in missions or PVP due to the size of the ammo and the slow speed, but ideal for a miner who is surrounded by ammo and can easily get sufficient material to reload just by mining the asteroids around them. Being hit with 500m3 of heavy ore travelling at a significant fraction of the speed of light is going to leave a mark as well as some funny kill mails.
For example I can see Veldaspar doing purely kinetic, were Omber doings kinetic and EMP due to the electrical properties of the minerals it contains. Of course the rare the ore the better the damage and the the ore variants like dense Veldaspar would have a modifier to reflect how much more minerials it contains.
If this does get introduced, their would have to be a capital version that could only fire veldaspar in much larger volumes. Macrointel, the place were the nature order of the universe does not hold sway. Pirates and ore thief's are congratulated by carebears for the actions. |

I like it, just cause of the LOLz
Just imagine a fleet of hulks POS bashing with Veld LOL!!!!!
I do think overall the Mining Barges should be tougher to kill. As it stands, very few will go into Low to Mine because the pirates are there and everyone knows it. Its not even the well organized high number gangs people have to worry about its the lone wolf pirates the 2 ship gang of pirates ect, that scram and pop mining bagres too easily.
I think Mining Barges should have a few extra Low's to allow them to equip a bunch more warp core stabalizers and a better tank. Make it so you need at least 5 med-small ships to take out a hulk. I would prefer better defensive capabilities for mining ships over any added offensive capabilities.
It should be harder for pirates to kill them, and with that it could promote more of them to venture into low. Heck if a gang of 6 hulks went to low to mine and got jumped by 6 pirates, the 6 pirates would only be able to scram and kill one of them while the other 5 escape rather than how it is now eher each pirate can scram each hulk and slowly kill them all. The goodies should be harder to obtain for everyone including pirates. But that might balance it too much for the griefers to enjoy :P

If I'd gatecamd, I'd love this, fill up a trasher with 8 of these and have massive alpha!
It would not be a carebear weapon, it'd be suicide ganker's heaven ------------------------------------- I like to fly around and shoot stuff.

Not sure about the veld gun. Haven't thought through the implications. However, making ships tougher means requiring more blobs. More blobs is bad.

Except it's barge/industral only, which has 1-3 highs, and a thrasher can at most fit one of those 500m3 ammo anyway. So unless you change OP's idea, it wouldn't actually work. That leaves a covetor for 3x weapon alpha. It would take a lot of buff to out alpha 8x 1400s, even more to be cost effective. Unless it's for lulz, which works.
Anyway, supported, for the lulz, if nothing else.

Not recently watched last star fighter but firing large rocks at planets etc is not that uncommon an idea in space sci if. They did it in Babylon 5, the bugs did in in star ship troopers and series of books call the lost command. Its also the basic idea behind planetary bombardment since planets cannot dodge rocks and they are cheap ordinance with good range.
The basic idea, came up from a way to give industrials a powerful weapon that cannot be be used on most other ships without unbalancing the ships. The idea of letting them mount 6 normal weapons and the CPU and power grid to do so would fundamentally change the normal fitting since they are traditional a tight fit for even high sec. Hence the need for a new weapon, then the need to stop other ships carrying it so a large ammo size. Then the though what miner in their right mind would loss a significant part of the cargo space for couple of reloads of ammo. From their it was simple to make the leap to using ore as the ammo sine the minor will have some in their cargo hold anyway.
I must admit the idea of pirate with -10 security status either running from a stone throwing mob of care bears or even worse getting stoned to death and having to live with that kill mail on their kill board does have a certain appeal.

The only way you could do that, is by changing the bonusses on all industrial and ore hulls. Otherwise there is no reason not to allow it.
BTW, loading ammo into turrets does not take your cargo hold into account. Reloading is not something a 0.6 or above destroyer pilot would value highly. ------------------------------------- I like to fly around and shoot stuff.

This would be a fun addition even though I can't see anyone serious about mining dropping a strip miner for one of these, at least in high sec. You'd have to create a new ship. Something in line with more agile hulk that has had its mining bonuses changed to rock cannon bonuses.
I'd +1 this.

This idea is exceedingly funny but it's also too easy to exploit. In order for it to be useful, you'd have to be able to alpha a cruiser with it. But if you can do that, I foresee fleets of hulks roaming low sec full of ore they simply bought in jita looking for stuff to gank. I like the old idea of using mining lasers as a weapon better. Get your trit off that abaddon instead of the roids .
Thus far you shall read, but no further; for this is my sig. |

That would be seriously fun, but won't happen as it goes against the game concept.
Game concept is, miners are defenseless so they must take defense along with them i.e. corp mates with PvP fits. Same as freighters are defenseles because they must hire an armed escort just in case trouble arises.
EVE is focused at MULTI-player and thus those who want to be lone wolves must adapt and pick what we are allowed to do and what we aren't. We aren't allowed to mine alone in lowsec, well, that's the only game in town so what? We still can do something else.
Think of it, why Orcas can't mine? Because are MULTI-player ships. Why freigters are defenseles? Because are MULTI-player ships. Why Hulks can't stand a fight in loswec? Because lowsec mining is a MULTI-player minigame. Et cetera.

This is exactly what Eve needs, lulz.
And make it loadable into stripminers instead of a separate weapon. There we go.

You obviously never tried to get your corporations pvp and pve pilots defend you while you mine for hours. There just is no way currently to go into low sector or 0.0 safely as a miner. The vast majority of corps don't have pilots who will defend you and your ship costs too much with far too little profit to making worth the time. I really wish I could trade in my skills and reassign them to combat.

I can carry tons of ore in a Hulk but only five t2 medium drones? Who can't kill five t2 drones in nothing flat? We need a Weapon of terror and ultimate destruction. Something that will make even Sanshas hesitate to approach us. We need the "Poof Poof" mega gun! |

I still think it would be cool if people could use a strip miner as a weapon. Make it horrible range but rip thru a ship in very little time. Bring new meaning to "hull miner"
