every time I enter local the chat - and for that matter the client, freezes for a noticeable split second, clearly linked to portraits newly loading with every new system and new pilots in that system.
Is there a way that I haven't seen yet to turn off the "load pilots portrait in chat"?
Frankly, sorry I don't want to see what any of you look like, until I want to.

Nope, no option to turn them off. CCP, in complete disregard for the needs of their customers, threw away the option.
What you can do (and depending on your OS might be pretty complicated) adjust permission settings for the cache folder and deny write access. In Windows XP that will mean disabling simple file sharing, though in later versions you might be able to adjust permissions more easily. No idea with other OSes.

This works fine and I highly recommend you do it. IMO it makes the local a bit easier to quickly scan for information and the gameplay experience is a bit smoother and enjoyable.

Hmm, hmm, hmm, if I do that (OS X give Characters folder only read access), getting info on a character, blocks his portrait to load at all.
Meaning you gain a bit and loose a bit.
CCP! Can you please revert the character loading back to what it was?

don't the portraits load using HTTP from a specific host (name I forgot)? wouldn't a hosts-file entry pointing to 127.0.0.1 help in that case?
How to PVP: 1. buy ISK with GTCs, 2. fit cloak, learn aggro mechanics, 3. buy second account for metagaming

Unfortunately the "Don't load character portraits" option has gone the way of the medium shader setting, engine trails, the old sexy Helios model, and everything else we loved but took for granted.

Just looked up something about those portraits. Contrary to the earlier method they are no longer rendered by your client, instead the client downloads pre-rendered pictures from the server. Basically like a web browser does. On average they have a file size of 18-20 KB. In addition as far as I can figure it out the client only loads the portraits that are actually visible for you, that is the part of the locals userlist you're looking at any given time (could be wrong though did not as much extensive testing but it sure looks the way for me).
Not saying there shouldn't be an option for it to be turned off, but if your computer struggles with that little bit of load occurring there you really have other issues than a missing option (unless you're doing mega-blobs only than you quite frankly deserve it). ----------------------------- OMG THE SKY IS FALLING! I have MORE than enough PC here, the issue is, latency/ v distance, so anything to improve my clients responsiveness is critical to enjoyment of the game, like I said above, you can clearly detect the lag of the chat when entering a system and you scroll to check reds etc. Disabling portraits would negate this stall. We need the option just like display and graphics adjustments, having an option to turn of the auto load function would improve the client. Just like before it didn't render the portrait until you specifically looked at them.
It's ok for you CCP folk there between Iceland and London and US etc, but us folk down under need every latency performance gain we can squeeze to stay in the competitive edge and not be reduced to the mining game only.

its called SCROLLING JITA TO FIND WARTARGERS .... loading 2000 portraits = lag, freezing, and all around crap
not to mention I used the old system to quickly see who have I interacted in the past. Loaded portrait meant I already viewed that persons profile = i know him.

So what you're saying is, we should be punished by CCP, for playing the game the way they advertise that it can be played? Interesting.

i want it turned off too. i used to use portraits for intel.
a war that i was in, the enemy would use alts to check on us, to see if we were just station spinning or actually out and about. so i would load all the portraits in a system manually, then start traveling to another region and watching for which portraits remain. was able to determine 4 of there alts this way.

this is a good idea.
give me an option!
i am part of the chatroom "the ale house" and that room is always so full of intresting conversation and sometimes Praxal's singing. it is also full of characters and loading the portraits every time i want to see what it's blinking about causes just a little bit of lag, which is way too much.
i feel bad for the nullsec guys who already have to use smartbomb spamming because they can't get a lock on anyone in those ridiculous fleet fights. |

The portraits only load when you actually see the character's name in the channel. In other words, not a real problem.

And it degrades client side performance every single time, for something that nobody ever asked for and most people would want reverted if given the option. Just because you're so very very out of touch with the game doesn't mean the devs are supposed to be.

Local isn't intended to be an intelligence tool. Every nerf to it is a good thing.

That is a game UI issue. The freeze while it loads something. Blame Python.

Yup, you're not out of touch with the game at all. Who cares if it's used as an intelligence tool? Even if loading portraits is stopped altogether, it's way better than auto-lagging every portrait. And yes. it reduces client-side performance. That's an inarguable fact. Maybe get your nose out of the asteroid dust and try flying around outside of 1.0 sec and you might realize it.
But CCP just has to have thousands of "pretty" pictures crammed into memory. Dominion was a big hit to server-side performance, incursions was a hit to client-side performance. Neither had anything game enhancing enough for the performance hits to be worth it.

True - scenario unfolds, Blockade runner, jump into local, instead of hitting align and F1(cloak) now, you have to sit there, scroll local first, make sure all the portraits are loaded, then align and cloak. Try just entering system and hitting warp/cloak - fps drops considerably, lag hits (client side) - fps monitor shows it and the drop is as the portraits load - not the gate cloak/covops cloak change.
