We all love eve correct? So much so we want many of our friends to play it. What if they did? What if EVE's subs numbers went up to a million? Meaning at any given time there is likely to be 60-120k players on at any time.
What would happen? Would CCP have to change some mechanics of the game to help facilitate all the players? Is EVE currently designed to be able to have a million players? 2 million? etc...
At what point would the "galaxy" not be big enough? I understand you can just make it bigger, but id hope in some eventful ways.
What im really asking is what changes if any would need to come to EVE in order to be able to handle one million + players? |

So roughly double what it is now eh?
All those empty low and null-sec systems would have twice as many players in them.
I find that without a good mob to provide one for them, most people would have no mentality at all. |

Without changing a thing, EVE could easily accomodate 100k players online tomorrow. Malcanis' Law: Any proposal justified on the basis that "it will benefit new players" is invariably to the greater advantage of older, richer players.

Nice speculation but imo it is a pointless exercise.
There is a certain number of mmo players and from that group eve draws its subscribers. With the learning curve and time requirement to do anything meaningful in eve this game will probably never break 100k online. Maintaining 40k seems like a high goal to me. My corp have the same problem as CCP, we have members who are thrilled by eves gameplay but just can't make the commitment because of real life issues.
Its similar to the law of thermodynamics - it will balance itself at a stable subscriber number. |

well I don't think that CCP would make another server like another "shard" for example. They would just add more servers to handle the increased traffic on Tranquility most likely. As someone else mentioned, we are no where near capacity. It would take a lot of players for that to happen. If they did add to the galaxy, I think it would be sweet if they added more 0.0 that is similar to wormholes but not actually wormholes. Meaning: no sleepers, no sleeper sites. No stations etc. Make it like an "undiscovered country" maybe introduce more lore to support it. The s
now if CCP would make an awesome live action movie about EVE and do some real television advertising on appropriate channels, I think that they could bring in more revenue than what they expect to achieve with DUST. Just my opinion. |

Why more asteroids, EvE is really cut throat, doubling or tripling the number of players would only make people fight over asteroids, more mining barges destroyed, more war over high sec moons, more destruction. At that point people who wanted "safe" minerals would salvage missions and reprocess modules. |

Biggest problem technically would be if you doubled the number of players, and you assume that all else is equal in terms of proportions of null/low/high sec players would be a "normal" alliance battle of 500 people becomes a "normal" of 1000 people, and a "big" battle of 2000 people becomes 4000 people etc.
Assuming the servers don't die I'd love to see 100K people online. More competition in such a free market economy is always a good thing, it would drive innovation and it would make the individual feel a lot smaller then they do now, part of a much bigger universe.
Big nullsec alliances would start having problems though, organising them takes teams of dedicated space nerds right now, if they doubled in size god knows what would happen. |

Will never happen. 120k people online means an average of 19 people per system. CCP insists on a shardless game. So when we're all crammed together like sardines, the subs will automatically drop. The older players simply have too much power, being years ahead of the new players in terms of skill and organization. This results in frustrating gameplay for many. But hey, CCP thinks it's a lack of tee-shirts or shiny ships that's the problem. Fair 'nuff. |

the might add new systems, I personally think they will add new wormholes. but 100k online at a time? to be able to do that they would probably just need to upgrade the trade hub nodes. |

I.E: encourage a few more trade hubs and reasons for people to live in or around them to keep pressure off the big four. Like they did with the former Yulei.
Enough subs to put 100000 Players Online simultaneously is going to require a massive increase in industry as well. If local markets are bought out more then they are more people would crowd into the four hubs.
As it stands now I think regional trade outposts could use a bit more stocking, already to much reason to use the main hubs for every little thing. |

Eve universe is quite large.. I traveled 29 jumps in a pod through nullsec few days ago. 80 % of systems were empty, rest had 1-3 players. only 1 had 10+ people in it.
same applies to lowsec.
Only highsec seems to be densely populated, but it also can accommodate much more people. |

I doubt that.
There is enough (yet empty) hisec / losec space, enough content, enough nullsec to conquer etc. Some could rage about scarcity of asteroids in hisec, but that would be a good thing actually ... |

He's a swift one. They say that in learning the game Go, it is best to lose your first 50 games as soon as possible. This is because Go is complex, and the only way you will start to get an idea of strategy and play is by first sucking and failing as hard as you can. So...In EVE, it is best to get your first 50 deaths by combat as soon as possible. |
