Ok Im 5 months into Eve now. I have been ganked a few times by nasty user rats . Attacked on other occassions but managed to jump out. Im kind of sick of geting attacked by other users for no reason, when im just minding my own business. Im an honourable pilot who is loyal to my corp [ARKC] but I would like to teach these idiots, who just spend their time ganking innocent players, a lesson. Im sick of being in care bear and running from idiots who open fire for no reason. So when will I know if im ready for PvP. The best ship I have at the moment is my Vexor. Am I best waiting until I get a bigger ship like a BC?

You are ready when you decide to attack, risking what you have in the process. A bigger ship doesn't make you a better pvp:er, it will only make you lose more isk if things go wrong.

Good answer and true. However Ive always been outgunned by a bigger ship. My gunnery skills are good and Ive been working on my engineering skills to utilise my grid better. I can hit at about 52K with a 250 carbide with Iron ammo but doesnt do much damage. Fire rate of approx 1 sec. WHat skills can I buy and train to improve the damage each gun does. I think I have all the gunnery skills. most to lvl 4 but there maybe some skill Ive missed

If you think you can do a better job, go find yourself a datacentre to host a box, get a copy of Visual Studio, and STFU.

you are never ready, there is always someone that beats the cap out of you. so if you can replace the ships you are maybe going to loose, you are ready. |

Yeh I have Sharpshooter to lvl 4 also surgical strike to 4. Thanx for the help guys I think wot Ive learnt here is to get enough collateral so If I lose a ship I can replace it easily . However I am a bit worried about the 4 implants I have installed. I've learnt most attacking users have no honour and like to space my pod as well. I think I'll wait a while longer before I get involved in PvP. Get stronger skills and more ISK

Just insure your ship mate. Practice some Karma and gank someone back (with honour of course lol). Wait for the right moment to strike...but don't wait too long or you'll die of old age, boredom or both. Live a little!

The only thing you need for PvP is the ability to fit weapons and a MWD/scrambler to a frigate.

Being at 52k using rails will get you the odd frigate kill and little else, you also cannot hold a target from that range unfortunatly.
Main Life Points Of PVP.
1) Holding a Target (You Or A Buddy) 2) Tank Their Damage 3) Have Enough Engineering To Keep Your Tank+Offence Running 4) Be Able To Break Your Opponents Tank 5) A Brass Set Of Balls
So long as you can do Options 1&2 for the duration (option 3 helps you do this) of the fight then option 4 is of low priority but handy when skilled up well, knowing what your able to take on is where option 5 kicks in. __________________________________________

As a seasoned pvper (meaning i've had my arse handed to me, lightly seasoned, several times) I can tell you that its like asking 'when am i ready to have kids?', 'when am i ready for this exam?', 'when am i ready to take my first girlfriend home to my parents?', if you keep asking yourself if u're ready, you never will be. If you know people who fly into fleet battles, jump in a frig with MWD a scrambler. If you dont, get a small group together and camp a gate flying whatever you want.
Know this; YOU WILL DIE! so get a clone. Just get out there and do it. SP is no substitute for real-time experience.

You can be PvP capable in 2-3 days from character creation, if you have friends who will bankroll your skills and equipment. -------

you best option as others have said is don't start pvping solo..start with a group of ppl wether it's gate camping, fleet combat or ganking the best way to learn how to pvp is to start in a frig and learn from more experienced players as you learn more and gain knowledge in pvp you can move to bigger ships (aslong as you have the finances) and to more risky situations where your chances of winning are not as good. Even the most experienced pvper will get his ass handed to him every once and a while. you will loose ship when pvping its a fact you just gotta take it in stride and learn from every experience.
Experience is the most valuable thing in pvp. happy killin.

Forget you even have those implants, if you choose the path of a warrior you cannot afford to be concerned with death. Accept the body you are in now is but a temporary vessel, push it to its limits. You will shake with fear in the first engagements, if if not then you are a fool.
good luck.

You're only truely ready when you don't care about dieing.
Implants, named mods, big ship? If you're not prepared to self destruct it in the pursuit of a kill, you're not ready.

I would not recomend getting into pvp untill you have 3-4 mil sp minimum. Then after taht you can try to drive some friggies, or go looking for miners to gank in the roid fields.
You are not ready for anything more than that untill you hit 2 mil in gunnery and missile skills. Engineering skills are of course a must, as you will get splattered as soon as you run out of cap. So get a mil in there as well.

That's the truth right there.
I've seen players with half a year worth of skill training too afraid to attack other players, but I've also seen a week old player take a poorly-fitted Incursus out there and kicking cruiser ass.
No guts, no glory. Just do it.

You're ready when you can smile after a defeat, and congratulate your opponent on a good fight in locals.
Point being, a lot of people in EVE aren't ready for PVP. ;)
But seriously, you are ready when you feel that putting what you have, on the line, is worth it for the rush of the fight.

If you're comfortable with losing your ship and your clone, then you're ready.
AdviceI can give you is, never pvp in a ship you cna't afford to lose, and get used to dying first. After the first couple of times, I'm told, it loses it's edge' and you are better prepared to do battle.

Yep, but my previous corp where ********s and had no interest in members. So I've basically been freelance. Lost 2 vexors, 4 tristans and a T-Rax all costs money you know and Im not a miner. I have to work hard for my ISK. Just joined a new corp now who are great guys and will help corp members who help the corp. Anyway not interested in a BS until I feel I have the skills to utilize it. SO many nOObs get a BS after about a month and lose it not long after to someone in a cruiser as they do not have the skills to use it. A ship is only as good as the pilot who flys it

So much wisdom, in one so young.....
As far as PvP goes, you're ready as soon as you can make the jump into low sec armed with guns and not mining lasers.
Clipped Wings puts it very well and there's a warning in there too. When you experience the rush of the fight, you'll get greedy for it. And soon you'll be sucked into a life of PvPing...
Savour your first experiences when you first go out looking for a fight and find it. Win or lose, the feeling is never quite the same as that first battle.

lol the first time I got PvPed was buy a guy that ganged with me so I was shocked my heart started pounding and lol I never got a shot off. The second time it was an honourable piate but only being the second time I fumbled with unlocking the canister I was emptying and locking them that I only got off a few missiles. Those were on days 3 and 5 for me respectfully not even 1 week in. Oh well next time I might not be so shocked and actually be able to fully engage them. The second time was fun we had a nice chat after she poded me. She even apalogized when she realized how long I had been playing. ------------------------------------- You are all worthless, and weak.

Some good advice in this thread.
In addressing the concern over not being able to afford losing ships etc, it does help to have some sort of established system for making isk on the side, be it a mining ship, an NPCing ship or a small group of ships at a base from which you can run all manner of agent missions.
In other words, keep your money-making gear separate from your PvP gear and use it to finance your PvP gear - learn to live within your means. Once you get to the stage where you can afford to replace frigs with little difficulty, that deep-rooted fear of real loss begins to subside. Then you can start working on being able to fund destroyers, raxes, BBs and so on...
I don't see it as being a matter of having a magic number of isk or skill points so much. Thinking that way, it'll turn into an excuse never to begin. And I've seen that as well, "just lemme get this skill trained up or just one mil isk more, then I'll come out with you". That's an easy trap to fall into, but very difficult to break out of.
Ultimately the only person who can answer the question is you, but you'll only know the answer once you try it and see.
Good luck.

Thanx Ben. best advice yet. I do tend to suffer from 'Ill just train 1 more skill and earn 1 mill more ISK'. OK i'll just grab the bull by the horns and DO IT

Great wee thread. The overwhelming opinion seems to be just get in there with what you can afford to lose.
I'm going to follow that advice and just kit out a frigate with standard stuff and get in there - with a few freinds of course.
Hope to start tonight :)
I've only been in Eve for under 2 months Drango so would be happy to learn hunting with you. Drop me a mail if your interested.
