With the coming of Dust 514, the regular shootaboyz will be part of the EVE universe. Of course we all know how this will affect our planetary infrastructures but I'd like to discuss something that could be a worthy addition in the distant future: Boarding operations.
Since the dawn of naval warfare it was often a viable tactic to board a vessel in order to capture it. Might it be pirates raiding trading vessel or the Brit capturing some Spaniard vessel at Trafalgar. Hell even the Bismarck was scuttled so he might evade that fate.
So picture this: you alliance destroying a handful of vessels, so far nothing fancy, and capturing one titan and 2 motherships. Of course the profit in this is evident.
But the thing is there s actually a lot of problem involved. Those issues are what I'd like to discuss.
1. The delivery. How do you send a bunch of angry marines in the monster belly? It must be something hard to do but still feasible. Something EVE players could defend against.
2. the effect on the ship. Will the titan stop to focus on it s internal defense or just keep running? I prefer it to keep on running. Maybe they could be partial effects depending on the progression of the battle. Maybe the boarding party could destroy engine and reactors they come across?
3. The timing. How do you time this with the dust marines? Make them wait until a boarding ship came trough the leviathan defenses? How would that work? If this happen in EVE what will happen in dust or the inverse.
4. The end results. Your corp mercenaries won/lost the boarding action. What happen now.
These have to be thought through because it might easily lead to an imbalance in our own eve. For instance, making a leviathan "on stand by" for a whole battle would just make it easy for someone to get a titan completely out of battle when this is not the intention.
And like i said this is about a distant future. Almost fantasy. |

I've wanted boarding parties for a long time. It could be launched via a super fragile mini-shuttle. Something with the HP of a jet can and only moves at 200m/s from the launching ship to the target ship. I'd make the mini-shuttle and launch module be a high slot mod. To use it, you would also have to have marines or militants in your cargo. Not sure as to how many of these guys to allow in a single launch, I'm thinking no more than 50. The defending ship would automatically receive crew armed only with the most basic defensive weapons (ie pistols and no armor) equal to the max allowed. The defending ship could also carry its own marines in addition to this poorly equipped crew force.
I don't see this happening anytime soon though. It would also be a nightmare to balance out. The numbers I presented are just what think would be an ok starting point for testing. The Troll is trolling. |

I say no.
I am an immortal demi-god whose brain is wired into every sensor of the ship. If I feel something is off... what's to stop me from sealing off the compromised parts of the ship and venting atmosphere?
As for the crew... given my choices between preserving their lives and potentially losing my ship to a bunch of grunts... or getting a new crew at the next station... I choose new crew.
/lolRP Change isn't bad, but it isn't always good. Sometimes, the oldest and most simple of things can be the most elegant and effective. |

im -1'ing this purely for the fact u havent done ur research on the other ideas that are very much like this,
But more so that u realise its been discussed before many times but cant be arsed to find these discussions yourself, relying on others to do the work for you. |

Venting your atmosphere wouldn't be very effective, as any self respecting boarding party would be wearing some type of space/pressure suit anyway. Far more effective would be to vent plasma into the boarded parts of the ship.
Practically it would just force everyone to carry around a bunch of marines in cargo, which would be pretty annoying. |

If anything I would be interested in knowing if the Dust beta has implied whether this might be coming to EVE.
This aspect is too obvious not to have already been decided. If they are not advertising it, it probably won't happen on release.
If it is not in release, then it needs to run for a while before seeing any changes makes sense. Cloaking being on a ten minute manual cycle timer? (Author: Bree Okanata) Fine. As long as there is a ten minute timer for being docked in a station. Also, you can't stop moving in the game. Just add in a way so every ten minutes you are randomly warped to the nearest other player. Keeps people from going AFK. |

I'd MUCH rather see them boarding a POS to capture it after the reinforce timer is out. The Skunkworks is recruiting. -áhttps://forums.eveonline.com/default.aspx?g=posts&m=1540711#post1540711 |

This idea comes up in the DUST beta forums all the time too and for the same reason its a bad idea there its a bad idea here too.
Boarding player ships allows you to take over someones pride and joy that they spent hours saving up to buy and you give them no ability to fight back or determine the outcome.
Its bad game design.
Now, POS's and Stations, boarding those is a great idea. |
