Quick bit of history.
Mountain Dew was launched in the mid 90's in the UK but didn't sell very well and was pulled about 2 years later.
Since then, 3rd party importers such as AmericanSoda.co.uk have kept the small die-hard fans of "the Dew" (such as myself) supplied with proper, all-American Dew.
About a year ago, a ****-poor version of the Dew was launched in the UK and branded as "Mountain Dew Energy". It tastes nothing like real Dew. It is an abomination.
Yesterday AmericanSoda.co.uk was served with a notification from the EU courts that they were now breaking the law importing US Mountain Dew as some of its ingredients are not approved for sale/use within the EU.
AmericanSoda posted this on their Facebook page earlier this afternoon:
"MTN branded Mountain Dew does not conform to European Union Standards. Therefore, we have discountinued this product and complied fully with the request"
Later on:
"Obviously the MD news hasn't gone down very well but I can assure you we were only informed yesterday and have no choice but to comply with EU regulations. I have noticed a few people siting other websites where you can purchase mtn dew but... I can also assure you that they are breaking the law and will have to cease selling mtn dew too. Mountain Dew Energy is the EU offering. Sorry if there was anything we could do we would."
Absolutely gutted
****ing Europe.

If the US can invade Iraq for oil, why can't we (the UK) invade the US for Mountain Dew?
It's only fair.

I only know a single place here in sweden that sell it.
My second favorite is Coke but thats WAY after the Dew.
If they stop selling it, i will be forced to start smuggling it in!
Thats it. Time to vote to leave EU.

See if you can get americansoda to import Rocky Mist. Its a rather good mountain dew clone that has its own unique twist taste wise plus its made from 'healthier' ingredients like concentrated orange juice instead of some exotic lab created chemical brew.

American sodas are full of high-fructose corn syrup so I wouldn't cry too much.
Some American ready meals and cheap foodstuffs contain horrible ingredients that don't pass EU standards. If it's banned in the UK there's generally a good reason for it.

Am I the only one suddenly concerned whats in Mountain Dew that validates it being banned?
Also UK Coke is better than US Coke. Its that damn corn syrup americans put on everything cause they want the states that produce corn to voter for them.

Nope.
Edit : Especially considering that EU has already made some allergy-inducing coloring chemicals legal in Sweden after having been banned a long time ago.

reason behind ban seems to be the "excessive amounts of caffeine" ---

Why not? Romanians are smuggling guns. Someone else is bringing w h o r e s. Someone else is bringing drugs. Surely someone would be able to bring some soft drinks...

10 grams is a fatal dose of caffeine. As long as they stick to 9.9g it should be fine <--- I'm not strung out on caffeine

No its not.
The reason its "banned" is because it contains the food colourant Tartrazine which is linked to hyperactivity, ADHD, anxiety, migraines, clinical depression, blurred vision, itching, general weakness, heatwaves, feeling of suffocation, purple skin patches, and sleep disturbance.
Its estimated (by the FDA) that 360,000 USA citizens are adversely affected by Tartrazine intolerance with the numbers increasing year on year. Its mandatory to declare the presence of Tartrazine in all food/drink products sold in the USA and its one of the increasingly few areas that the FDA DO enforce rigorously.
You want to drink crap like that then you go right ahead.

Suggestion - if you have any friends in the States have them buy and ship the Dew to you via a courier service such as UPS or Fedex. The high shipping charge becomes more reasonable when you have them ship a few 12-packs at once. Since it's a personal shipment and not a commercial sale, you might be able to get around the law. Once it's done, pay your friend via Paypal.

Edited by: Ultim8Evil on 04/02/2011 11:28:23 Just a quick update, AmericanSoda.co.uk have updated their blog
Still no mention exactly why it has been banned. As has been mentioned, it's probably to do with colourings or flavourings. Very much doubt it's anything to do with caffine content.
They're now pushing Mello Yello as the legal Dew alternative.
Is it any good?
