I just watched Birdy the Mighty not too long ago. One of the better stories for an anime that I've ever watched.

How did this get so far in with no one reccomending it? Seriously, one of the best animes I've ever seen, and the dub is actually stunningly good.
Immortals, New York Depression era mob wars, and a train. Also, the most hilarious duo I have ever seen in an anime, Isaac and Miria. There can never be too much Isaac and Miria.
Another one I am just going to throw out there is Angel Beats! Not going to say it is epic. Not going to say it is awesome. It has its flaws. But goshdarn it, it made me bawl my eyes out at the end, something I have never had a tv show do for me. Well... except for Buffy. She saved the world a lot.
And I'll agree with the above posters that Darker than Black is good, especially the first season.

Gantz (opening) "When the Gantz sphere opens, green text appears on its surface, informing those present that their "lives have ended and now belong" to him"
Serial Experiments - Lain (opening) "Lain is influenced by philosophical subjects such as reality, identity, and communication."

Cowboy Bebop. comes immediately to mind.
I wondered why this was thus far lacking in the thread.
D'oh, I should have mentioned that one too. One of the first anime series that I've watched and probably my favorite.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but so far I havent seen ANYONE, here, in the EVE FORUMS, a forum for a game of Galactic Scope, with Pew-Pew, tactics and DRAMA, racial tensions and political machinations, EVER on this kind of threads, MENTION ANYTHING at all about the WONDERFUL JEWEL , that is
LEGEND OF GALACTIC HEROES
Imagine EVE, with the Amarr (sort of) in war with the Gallente and a small Caldari merchantile empire in between.
Now The whole series is about the WAR, from the perspective of the higher ups and small snapshots of the lowest cannon fodder.
it amazes me, how people even barely acknowledge this series or even know about it. For me having played EVE made me watching this series hopeful of one day being able to deploy tactics in a galactic scale as the ones in this series.
Anyway Im off, go back to your mechas, gung-ho heroes and sword wielding magic users. For me it's all about Legend of the Galactic Heroes.

As a small yet vital edit: Watch anime subbed and not dubbed for the love of God. Every time you watch dubbed anime, Brandon Heat kills a puppy.
There's a few dubs that I don't mind actually, GITS: SAC being one of them.
But yeah, most of them are dubbed ala One Piece, so the subs present a better experience.

Ready to turn this into a "Coolest Anime Character" thread.

I don't think I can recommend Juuni Kokki. Not because the anime itself isn't any good ( it is ), but because the anime just stops at a random place in the story! It's even worse at that than Rurouni kenshi and D.grayman.
