Hi, I'm considering buying a new desktop PC as I've only got laptop atm.
Saw this and would like some opinions:
Processor: Intel« CoreÖi5-760 Quad Core (2.80GHz, 8MB Cache) + Turbo Boost Motherboard: ASUS« P7H55-M SI: MICRO ATX VALUE MAINBOARD,USB 2.0 & SATA 3.0Gb/s Memory: 8GB KINGSTON HYPER-X GENESIS DUAL-DDR3 1600MHz, X.M.P (2 x 4GB KIT) Graphics: 1GB ATI RADEONÖ HD5450 - DVI,HDMI,VGA - DirectX« 11 Hard Disk: 1TB WD CAVIAR GREEN WD10EARS, SATA 3 Gb/s, 64MB CACHE PSU: 350W Dual Rail PSU + 120mm Case Fan Monitor: IIYAMA E2472HD 24" LED WIDESCREEN, HDMI/DVI-D HD 1920x1080
It would be used to run upto 4 EVE clients, I would be using it for other games but I'd imagine this would be the maximum load.
Thoughts, ideas or suggestions?
It's priced at ú797 (That includes windows 7 and other devices such as sound card, wireless etc....)

Get a branded 500W PSU.

I am not certain 350W power supply is enough.
Whenever you see Green in hard drive description, replace it with a model that is not Green.
Video card is alright, but it is not a "gamer" card, fine for EVE.

Edited by: TimMc on 22/01/2011 20:32:33 Thats gonna run into power issues the second you put a load on the CPU and graphics.
I run a similar system and have 800W PSU, although its probably overkill.
Edit: fyi, modern high end GPU on full load use close to 350W iirc.

As people mentioned before power WILL become an issue. To be on the safe side get something that plays in the 550-600W league. Oh and get a one of a good brand, preferably with 80+ efficiency. You don't need top-of-the-line PSU's but those I got in mind cost around 50-60 EUR (to lazy to do a currency calculation right now). They are worth their money. Did the mistake of buying no-name cheapish PSU's in the past they blow out on a regular basis if you're unlucky. Power supply is NOT were you want to cut overall costs.
Graphics card isn't that nice too. A "little" more expensive but from the top of my head I'd say a GTX 460 (OC'ed or not doesn't matter as you can OC yourself if you want to) would work nice in there. For an AMD graphics option I hope someone else will come up with them as I particularly do not like/use them, so I'm not an expert there.
Of course those two things would blow up a price quite a little (I guestimate about 130 EUR) but I don't know where your absolute limit is so I just throw it out there.
A thing were you could cut some of the costs (but not that much) would be the RAM. I might get smacked around on the forum for saying this but anyhow here it goes:
8 GB is nice, but if you really need a new machine and have a limited budget it's worth some time thinking about going with just 4 GB (although RAM prices are low right now). Things will still work on 4 GB and you can always upgrade at a later time (that's what I'm doing right now as I'm low on money and really really need a new rig).
Secondly you can safely go with slightly cheaper DDR-1333 since that's the maximum the CPU's memory controller can handle with any stock settings.
Oh and I see that G.Skill RipJaws - Series RAM's are currently pretty popular as they bring good performance at a reasonable price.
However: If money isn't an issue at all I'd recommend going for an i5-2500K on the LGA 1155 socket. That's just a monstrosity of a CPU at a very reasonable price for the performance you get (i7-2600K isn't worth the extra 100 bucks for standard use). If you go with that but don't want to OC just get the normal one (without the "k").
PS: I KNOW I can't shut up and keep stuff short... maybe I should start writing a book or something -.-
----------------------------- OMG THE SKY IS FALLING! Contract me all your stuff so I can save it! |
