I'd like to thank those of you who pointed out tips for creating avatars. I practiced on an alt to fool around with the creator, then read through this thread and created this character. I think this one turned out well. I still have many more to go so I should be damn near an expert by the time I'm done making characters. Unless I just decide to hit random a few times for each one and call it a day. Thanks again you guys rock.

Originally by: Milla Lekarariba I like my avatar, but just wish I could open up the eyes a little more, but with my race and bloodline it does seem to be that the 'slit' type eyes is a natural and genetic thing..
But even so, the eyes on mine have gone very small and squinting..
Is there any way I could use lighting, or perhaps make up or something to make the eyes appear less 'chinese'?
When you play with the eye settings you should be able to adjust both the bottom and top of the eye. This can be expanded further during the portrait stage, don't forget the eyebrows too. Eyeshadow in a light color can also enhance this.

The eyelids close slightly as the eyeballs look down, I noticed when testing. Move the eye direction up a bit, and perhaps compensate by rotating the whole body (not just the head) forward a bit.
Also, eyelid option on Asian characters - makes a small difference if you go the other end of the scale.

This is very true. Also remember to not spend too long making your character. If you do and you disconnect, your client will restart itself when you try to save your photo and you will need to redo everything again.
There is an enhancement CCP can fix. Check out here. --------- The making of the new Jenny Spitfire |

It's a good idea to take more than one shot of a particular pose with different lighting conditions, poses are not saved so you would have to recreate it to change lighting later!
For CCP: Please add save states for poses!

Taking your time is for sure the most important tip-I mucked around in Sisi for ages trying out this & that. Since I'm now unwillingly Mongolian, I had to find a way to recreate the way I look, but disguise the racial changes & still have an expressive avatar(took me ages I can tell you lol). Lighting is very important-I went for strong lighting so I can be seen & recognized easily in a small pic, but posed so it looks natural & not a mug shot lol-seen far too many of those! And way too many flat, fuzzy dark avatars-just looks crap imo-be creative & have fun with it. I know the lighting options are limited tone wise, but with the right background, you can change the whole feel of the pic-warm/cold etc(sorry the photographer in me coming out lol). For you guys out there with female alts-us girls also use make up to express ourselves-I have an alt based on Tank Girl so I can express my inner punk lol-don't be afraid to express your own personality! There are sadly no make up options for guys, but that would be fun!

Two tips for a winning smile:
1. Smiles are rarely symmetrical, and they often look more intriguing when they're more asymmetrical. Try raising one corner of the mouth more than the other.
2. When you smile, your cheek pushes up a bit and takes your lower lid with it. These effects are more pronounced the bigger, or more "genuine" your smile is.
In the Eve Character creator, those two facial structures aren't linked (that's not a critique - it gives you much more control). You have to raise the corner of your mouth with one control, and the upper cheek / lower eyelid with another. So if your smile doesn't look genuine or happy enough when you pose for your portrait, try tweaking the upper cheek/lower lid control to match your smile, i.e. if your character is smiling more on one side than the other, raise it more on one side than the other.
Both of these suggestions are best used in a subtle way. Really wide disparities in mouth shape, or raising the upper cheek / lower lid control to the max, are going to make your character look strange at best. But the little touches can add a lot to a portrait.

Use dark shadows for eyes! Also play making positioning your head look upwards would help.

If you like it that much maybe you could transfer it to your main, assuming they are the same race.

When I goto create my Avatar I make sure that I have a direction in mind. As in I have an idea of what I want them to look like at the end. This will help you keep on track during the design process.
In regards to backgrounds and lighting this really depends on your personal preference but do try to match the lighting with the background. A blue background with red lighting highlights in most cases is going to look odd.
When posing the character try to stay away from the "Head in a box" look, you have the ability with these to tools to do something dynamic. I've seen quite a few really good examples of this so far.
Most important have fun.

Unfortunatly its on a different account so I would have to transfer the character first and since im selling him shortly I dont really want to transfer it twice, also i think they are differenet backgrounds.
Im sure I will get something nice, the tips in here are really helpful.
I guess my tip would be have a look at what random can do for you, you may be pleasently suprised, it could also give you a nice base to start from.

Best tip - just play around with it for a while and try things out. If you don't like a pic you can take another one over it.

Probably one of the best tips here....experiment on your alts so by the time you get to do your main you know what can work!

Looking good out there, capsuleers! Might be reiterating some already stated, but my tips would include: Guys - make use of scars, freckles, and/or aging to give your skin a realistic texture. Not so much for the girls wearing make-up. Take your time trying out several options and don't be afraid of checking out extremes, you might be surprised at what you stumble on. Try many different positions moving head and shoulders around and see how each might look with each of the poses. Keep taking photos in your four available until you like what you see, then retake photos of ones you don't like as much, making sure to not take another picture over your favorite one or two. When all four look good to you, play around with poses and zooms some more. When they all look good and you can't decide which of the four you like best, likely any one of them will be great.

I agree, some of you whippersnappers are way to young and definitely practice on your other alts before you hit your main.

One tip I'd suggest would be not to become too obsessed with recreating your old avatar, have some fun with the system. You can keep the 'character' of your old portrait, while changing the avatar itself a little. Mine is still looking a little artificial to me and I can't figure out why, but that could just be due me missing my old face :-p. ""

Use dark shadows for eyes! Also play making positioning your head look upwards would help.
Additionally.. when in sculpting mode, turn the head sideways and grab the lower eye lid.. then move the eyeball deeper INTO the skull. Now try to adjust the eyebrow area a bit downwards (frontal view) and a little bit inwards on the sides. Then go for the upper eyelids and move those outwards a bit (frontal view again) and forward (side view).
If you're very carefull you get a caucasian/asian cross going for your char.
The ridge of the nose then also needs some adjustment but I think from here on you should get the idea.
Just keep in mind that these adjustments more or less cause that in the photobooth the expression sliders are pretty much already at their maximum levels and thus an angry look is very hard to accomplish. My caucasian/asian chars tend to look a bit sad if I've been not really really carefull. It will take you probably several hours to get the hang out of this.. I would suggest Sisi, alt slot with same race/bloodline as main and lots and lots of practice until you're trained.
Make screenshots of the finished trials after each session from front/side/iso and use them as template for the next try. I 'trained' roughly 8-10 hours on Sisi for my JinMei main char for this

Edited by: Beavizzz on 21/01/2011 14:40:34 Sorry, couldn't read all posts, maybe it was mentioned before, but here are my tips:
1. Hair takes the most of PC recources, model it last. 2. Watch for blinking when taking snapshots. 3. You can make more of facial expressions (more natural smile or more anger/fear, etc), if you go back to modeling, make some changes and forth to snapshooting to see the new results. If you go back and forth your taken snapshots dissapear, but you have more power of the uber-best-final smile/grin/etc. 4. Try to match light with background picture.
5. Almoust forgot- use the age, scarring and freckle slider (or you most probably end up with plastic barby).
