I posted this on the feedback thread, but thought I should post it here as well for those still trying out the spiffy new avatar portrait thingie.
I've found a way round the "preview isn't clear enough" problem which some of us have had before clicking "save" (we'd line everything up nicely, take a pic, and the preview is so small we can't really see clearly the details, and then we click save and we're staring lower than we were in the character creation screen). When you save the four previews (or just one), the actual picture is saved to your cache under the "pictures/portraits" folder. You can then alt/tab out and take a good long look at the picture (it's displayed at a very good resolution so if the eyes aren't staring where you want them to you can't miss it) you took and see if it's what you want. It's very clear, and leaves no room for error too!
Now I just need one chance to redo my portrait!! *PussinbootsEYES*

Yup. It's the only good way of getting a view of how your work might turn out (I say "might" because there are still differences that won't show up until the server renderer has gone to work on the picture, and there are some rather drastic bugs that might show up there).
It's really what the preview pictures should be showing, rather than the postage stamp images we have now. What's even more infuriating is that, in a sense, it is showing those images, but they're scaled down using some highly lossy scaling scheme that completely kills all detailsà ùùù ôIf you're not willing to fight for what you have in ≡v≡à you don't deserve it, and you will lose it.ö ù Karath Piki |

is it true that the last photo you take is the one selected when you save, regardless of the one you have highlighted?

According to the Incursion 1.1 issues thread, yes. ùùù ôIf you're not willing to fight for what you have in ≡v≡à you don't deserve it, and you will lose it.ö ù Karath Piki |

According to the Incursion 1.1 issues thread, yes.
I believe it is only for new character creator, not updating portrait. At least it's worded like that.

Not only is it too small, it is misleading. The thumbnail appears to me to have been rendered using a wide-angle virtual lens, wider than the lens that is used to actually take the shot. So even if it were large enough to see well, it would still not be representative of the final result.

Best thing to do would be to use a trial account to see the server rendered picture, then when it works recreate the scene in your paid account and hope it looks somewhat what you wanted it to look like.
Call each character Portrait Test (number)
Maybe CCP will notice the problem and in the short term you can see what you might look like.

deserves another bump,
Its quite easy to open the folder and it really helped me out. I deleted the ones I didn't want just in case and I didn't get an error.
